Geek Mob Mercenary (LIGHT NOVEL VERSION) Volume 5 Chapter 111

Mob №111 “There’s no way you could get compensation for something like that”

Planet Garostidal is one of the Imperial Demesne territories scattered throughout the Galactic Empire’s domain.

The reason for this is that in the vicinity of this planet, there exist two-way direct gates to Planet Hein, the imperial capital, making it an important location not only for transportation and logistics but also militarily.

In fact, when His Majesty the Emperor from several generations ago launched an invasion war against a former nation that is now one region of the Empire, this gate was used to replenish supplies, ammunition, and troops, so its importance goes without saying.

Naturally, such Imperial Demesne territory has incredibly strict security, and it’s said that even during the recent rebel army subjugation, the guards didn’t move from their posts.

Obviously, mercenaries like us have to go through ridiculously strict checkpoints.

Furthermore, this gate alone has an absurdly high usage fee.

Of course, nobles and commoners pay the same price.

Considering the capital’s safety, even the previous His Majesty apparently wouldn’t compromise on this point.

That said, it’s not that commoners can’t use it, so it’s frequently utilized during school trips and company excursions.

However, this time—whether due to our client Starden Corporation being a long-established company with headquarters on the capital planet Hein, or thanks to the consideration of General Jack Baldor Breskin, Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Military Central Fleet Subjugation Force and Commander of the 1st Fleet—we were thankfully able to pass through the checkpoint fairly easily.

Even those Bishop Rank folks—let’s gratefully call them the “Scapegoats”—didn’t do anything stupid like throwing their weight around with their rank or their probably noble family names, demanding preferential treatment or to cut in line at a place like this.

Incidentally, since the gate usage fee is charged per ship that passes through, everyone was stored in the aircraft carrier during transit.

Unfortunately, Tiursad-san’s mothership [Ukrimo] naturally couldn’t fit in the aircraft carrier, so she apparently had to pay out of pocket, but it seems the necessary expenses will be added to the reward later.

And so, while feeling slightly tense, the external camera monitor displayed the moment we passed through the gate.

I said “direct,” but passing through the gate doesn’t mean you arrive at Planet Hein immediately—you need to fly for about three hours from the gate.

In case of emergency, this distance is apparently used to intercept enemies.

Once we’re this far, we should be fine, but just in case, we execute proper security.

And then, the capital planet Hein that came into view was a blue and beautiful planet.

I’ve been to this capital planet once before on a high school field trip.

At that time, I just followed the standard course—viewing the Imperial Castle from outside, going to a theme park colony, and during free time visiting anime shops and bookstores.

Then, just before arriving at Planet Hein, all mercenaries launch their ships from the aircraft carrier.

On this Planet Hein, only the imperial ships of the Imperial Family—Her Majesty the Empress and His Excellency the Dukes—along with their escorts, some Imperial Military vessels, and dedicated cargo ships for material transport are allowed to descend directly to the planet. Descent of all other ships is prohibited.

Our client’s cargo will apparently be transferred to a dedicated cargo ship and delivered.

There are currently rumors that a giant barrier covering the entire planet is under development.

For this reason, Planet Hein has numerous colonies for various purposes.

Centered around the spaceport with orbital elevators for descending to the planet’s surface, there are colonies dedicated to cargo loading and unloading, colonies exclusively for private civilian ships to dock, police-exclusive colonies, military garrison colonies, and of course, a colony exclusively for the mercenary guild.

Upon arriving at Planet Hein, representatives from our client Starden Corporation—though via monitor screen—expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the mercenaries who provided escort, along with condolences and thanks for those who had died, along with the completion certificate for the request.

We dock our ships at the mercenary guild-exclusive colony—the mercenary guild headquarters branch office—and immediately go to collect our reward.

However, apparently this branch office’s reception only has female staff.

I have a really bad feeling about this, but I have no choice but to go, so I steel myself and try talking to them.

“Excuse me. I’ve brought the completion certificate for the escort request, so please process it.”

“Yes. Certainly. Please hold your completion certificate and ID over this checker… Yes. John Uzoss-sama, correct? The Starden Corporation request is complete. Your reward has been deposited, please accept it.”

“Ah, in data money please.”

“Certainly. One moment please… Please hold your payment device over here.”

Following the receptionist’s words, I hold my wrist-com over the offered scanner, and with a beeping electronic sound, the reward is paid to my wrist-com.

“The reward for the Starden Corporation’s caravan escort request is 1.5 million credits base pay plus 1.5 million credits hazard pay, for a total of 3 million credits. Please accept it.”

“Ah, thank you very much.”

After expressing my thanks, I was simultaneously relieved and extremely wary.

To have a procedure with a female receptionist end this smoothly was way too suspicious.

So I thought there would be a surprise attack after letting my guard down.

But nothing came from the guild.

Well, there were plenty of other people processing the same request, so I didn’t stand out, and there were some really conspicuous people there, which might be why.

Sure enough, the Lambert-Rossweisse group, the Arthur-Seira group, [Leopardess] Tiursad-san, and the “Scapegoats” were surrounded by people who looked like military personnel.

Looks like the scouts came after all.

Good thing I gave away the credit.

That said, Lambert-kun might let something slip, or some troublesome people might get involved, so I should leave early.

From the reception to the hangar, I wasn’t bothered by any other mercenaries, safely made it to my ship, and finished refueling.

Incidentally, due to frequent movement between colonies, apparently all colonies have fuel supply facilities.

Thinking I could leave right away, the moment I tried to board my ship—

“Oi. Why the hell are you here, you gross otaku bastard?”

—I was hit with an unpleasant line.

The identity of the speaker was none other than the Queen Rank mercenary who leads the mercenary team [Purgatorio], Stridum Bissen, the Count’s son, who should have been arrested along with his lackey members on extortion charges.

This time, [Purgatorio]’s lackey members weren’t with him—he was alone.

Well, aside from him getting full of himself and getting punched by Alphonse Zeistole, there wasn’t much damage, so either his father got him out, or he volunteered for the previous rebel suppression and received amnesty or something.

“I just came for an escort request, and I’m about to head back.”

I really don’t want to use polite language with a guy like this, but it’s better to use it to avoid trouble.

“Right. It’d be way above your station for you to become a headquarters member of the mercenary guild.”

“Yes. So if you’ll excuse me.”

Saying just that, I try to board my ship quickly, when—

“Wait. You know the blonde woman from [Feathered Helmet], right?”

—he calls out to me.

I wonder what this is about. I feel like I heard a similar line recently.

“Well, yes. We worked together this time.”

“Then bring her to me.”

Well, a guy like this only has one kind of business.

So immediately

“That’s impossible. Even if I talked to her, she wouldn’t give me the time of day.”

I answered

From his perspective, his evaluation of me is probably that low, so if I say this, he should back off easily.

I’ll contact Rossweisse-san after I launch my ship.

However, his response far exceeded my expectations.

“Tch! Useless. Oi! Since you were useless, hand over compensation!”

Huh? What’s this guy saying?

There’s no way you could get compensation for something like that!

Previously, he hurled insults and abuse, but he never demanded money.

Probably because he was arrested, his father stopped giving him an allowance.

That’s why his lackey members aren’t here.

Maybe he was even demoted in rank?

And so he immediately goes for shakedown—no, from his perspective, this is probably a legitimate demand.

As I’m sighing about what to do—

“There’s no way you could get compensation for something like that.”

—I hear a gruff voice I’ve heard before and don’t want to hear.
