Misunderstood Saintly Life Volume 5 Chapter 4.5

[Stage-Sub6] Long Live Ouga sama!

A dark shadow that had suddenly covered the distant sky slowly faded away.

That magic—it was the same kind Flone had used in the Vellet territory.

Right now, Ouga sama and Flone must be locked in their final, deadly battle over there.

And now… it seemed the outcome had been decided.

“…………Ouga.”

“……I believe in you.”

A short distance from the half-destroyed Vellet estate, Lady Karen and Lady Reina were praying with their hands clasped.

Lady Karen had been tirelessly tending to the survivors within the estate, while Lady Reina had fought valiantly alongside others to capture Flone’s subordinates.

But ever since, they had been praying like this—waiting for Ouga sama’s return.

They were gripping their hands so tightly that their fingertips had turned purple.

But it couldn’t be helped.

Ouga sama had chased after Flone and, together with Lady Leiche, headed into the final battle.

Since they had flown off on dragon mounts, all we could do from here was pray.

……Because I failed to end Flone’s life, I forced Ouga sama to bear an even greater burden.

……No, self-reflection can come later.

Ouga sama would surely defeat Flone and return safely.

For now, like those two, I would offer my prayers until my beloved master returned…… Hm? What’s that…?

I squinted at a black dot slowly growing larger against the blue sky.

Realizing what it was, I gently tapped the two ladies on the shoulders.

“Alice? Did you find more injured people?”

“No, it’s not that. Lady Karen, Lady Reina—look over there.”

I pointed, and in the distance, a dragon mount was gradually coming close enough to be seen with the naked eye.

And on its back—Ouga sama, raising his right arm high in triumph, with Lady Leiche clinging tightly to him as usual.

“……Thank goodness.”

“……It’s finally over.”

The two of them let out relieved sighs, then slumped weakly to the ground.

The past few hours had kept their nerves stretched to the limit.

And on top of that, they had been fighting through exhaustion without sleep.

For young girls of just fifteen and sixteen, it was only natural they’d collapse.

As someone older, I had to set an example.

I took a deep breath, then raised my voice loud enough to echo across the Vellet territory.

“The one who [Judges and Saves] the evils of this world! The [Savior] who lights the path of life! The [Saint], whose gentle heart and endless courage weave the future—Lord Ouga-Vellet has raised his cry of victory and returned to us!”

“Ahaha… same as always…”

“Even Ouga sama seems too tired to laugh it off this time…”

Good—Ouga sama’s reaction was as favorable as ever.

I’ll keep composing more hymns in his honor. If one day, his glorious deeds spread across the world, nothing would bring me greater joy as his sword.

…A-And, of course, as his wife too…

Ahem! It’s too soon to get carried away, Alice.

Right now, my duty as a maid comes first. I can act as his wife after that.

“H-Hey… Alice. Was that for real?”

“Ouga sama’s back…?”

“Does that mean… he won? Did he… avenge our comrades?”

Servants who had heard my voice began gathering in droves.

Even those with bandages wrapped around their heads and limbs pushed forward, desperate to catch a glimpse of Ouga sama.

When I pointed slowly at the dragon carrying him, they erupted in emotion, raising their hands high.

“LONG LIVE OUGA SAMA! LONG LIVE OUGA SAMA!! LONG LIVE OUGA SAMA!!!”

Cheers of joy spread instantly through the Vellet territory, filling the air with chants of “Long live Ouga sama!” for some time.

After watching the scene with satisfaction, I went to report to the head maid, who was still recovering inside.

Gulp.

The sound of someone swallowing echoed in the deathly silence and tension of the royal chamber.

I stood there, shoulders trembling, holding the letter just delivered by one of my subordinates stationed in the Vellet territory.

The messenger, a mage, had pushed their wind magic to its limits to deliver this as quickly as possible.

Behind me, others waited impatiently for my report, eager to know the contents.

This message had been sent to the head of House Vellet—Ouga’s father, the man with the deepest grudge against Flone. Everyone understood that, nine times out of ten, this was about her.

I tried to speak, to relay the news clearly for all to hear… but my voice caught in my throat.

Growing impatient with my hesitation, En-chan snatched the letter and read it aloud instead.

“Official report: Flone Milfonti has been captured by the [Saint], Ouga-Vellet! I repeat—Ouga-Vellet has captured Flone Milfonti!”

“OOOOOHHHH!!!”

En-chan’s voice triggered a thunderous roar from the soldiers and holy knights gathered in the palace.

The mechanical doll attack that had struck the capital—

Though it had finally been contained, the battle had cost many lives, leaving the survivors exhausted.

Had Flone herself appeared in the royal capital, the Kingdom of Rondism would have surely collapsed without resistance.

Amidst the dark mood feeding their anxieties, this sudden good news was more than enough to lift their spirits.

A few rushed out to spread the word to those resting or still patrolling despite their fatigue—but this was one report they had to hear immediately.

But… so it was true. Ouga… finally captured Flone…!

My chest swelled with pride at my son’s accomplishment. How many decades had it been since tears last welled in my eyes?

Moving to a secluded corner of the chamber so no one would see, I wiped them away—only to feel a hand patting my shoulder.

Only one person would dare touch a duke so familiarly.

“Hohohoho. That son of yours has done something truly extraordinary, Gordon.”

“Your Majesty, King Anbarld…”

I hurriedly bowed my head.

Despite the relentless strain on his aged body, the king had never once faltered, maintaining his dignity as the nation’s leader throughout.

That we had endured this crisis at all was thanks to his unwavering support of our decisions.

As his subject, I could ask for no greater honor.

“…My apologies for showing such an unsightly display.”

“A boy of fifteen, rising to become the hero who saved the world—what father wouldn’t shed tears for such a son?”

“…Thank you, Your Majesty.”

I couldn’t afford to show too much emotion here.

So, the king had deliberately made me bow my head in thanks, hiding my tear-streaked face.

“Today, you and House Vellet have performed magnificently. I’ve been racking my brain over how to reward you all.”

“Hahaha… Please bestow my share upon my beloved son. I’m certain his battle was far fiercer than mine.”

“But what reward could possibly exceed the title of [Saint]…? I can only think of one.”

With that, the king tapped the crown upon his own head.

A cold sweat drenched my back instantly.

“Y-Your Majesty, please, no jokes! What if people misunderstood and thought you were abdicating?!”

“No need to panic. Everyone here knows it’s just a jest in private. You’re far too serious, Gordon.”

“Anyone would react the same way! Please refrain from such jokes—they’re bad for my heart!”

King Anbarld only chuckled evasively in response.

…I wasn’t entirely sure he was joking.

He had taken a keen interest in Ouga for some time now.

Ugh… The fatigue and this new worry hit me at once, making me dizzy.

“But mark my words—others will soon set their sights on your son as well. The Empire, other nations… all hungry for talent.”

“You needn’t worry about that. Ouga already has a family of his own—…Ah.”

“Something the matter, Gordon?”

“Actually, Your Majesty, regarding Ouga’s reward… I’ve just had an idea.”

Leaning in, I whispered my proposal into the king’s ear.

The moment I finished, His Majesty granted immediate approval.

Ouga would surely be pleased.

“Hohohoho. Today shall be remembered as the day a new legend of the [Saint] was born.”

“Indeed, Your Majesty.”

As I laughed in agreement, I caught En-chan glaring at me from across the room.

The message was clear: Stop chatting and get back to work.

Ouga had given his all.

As his father, I’d push myself a little further too.

“We can’t let the [Saint] show us up! Let’s finish this! Many have died by the hands of the arch-criminal Flone Milfonti! Ensure no more lives are lost—move out!”

“OOOOHHHH!!!”

Bolstered by the joyous news delivered by the [Saint], the Kingdom of Rondism announced the complete suppression of the mechanical dolls late that same night.

And so, the day that would later be called [The Day of Calamity] came to an end.
