The first time a Kaiju appeared before humanity was on May 4, 1999…in the state of New York, United States of America. On this day, humanity, who had made the earth, the seas, the skies, the ocean depths, and even space their domain through scientific and technological might, once again faced the threat of Kaiju, the terrors of the great natural world.
Why did the Kaiju suddenly appear?
The prevailing hypothesis, which still holds weight, is that it was a phenomenon of biological selection triggered by the rapid changes in the Earth’s environment caused by repeated nuclear testing and environmental destruction (Note 1). However, we shall not delve into the details here.
In any case, the generations born before the Kaiju’ appearance were plunged into a crucible of immense confusion by this definitive paradigm shift. This chapter gathers the voices of those people who were born in the heyday of humanity and found themselves forced to live in this new era, encountering the completely unknown existence of the Kaiju.
And yet…in a sense, this is a testament to a time of happiness. For the humans of that era, the Kaiju were an unknown threat, but not an absolute one. Certainly, the global population declined rapidly, and the continents of Africa and Australia suffered catastrophic damage. However, in the perceptions of the people at the time, this was seen less as a threat from the Kaiju, and more as a consequence of humanity’s own mistakes…the frictions between nations and the immaturity of anti-Kaiju strategies.
If those obstacles could be overcome, and all of humanity could unite and respond appropriately, there was an optimistic conviction that humanity could win the battle against the Kaiju any day now.
For the simple reason that…
Humanity had encountered the Kaiju, but had not yet met him.
They had not yet faced true terror.
— This is a memory of the era when humanity’s demise began, and also a memory of a time of happiness, when true despair was still unknown.
