Free City, Prologue

I, the protagonist, decided to head towards Free City. Asking why would be tactless. Since I, the protagonist, decided, it must be done.

After finishing the knight training camp, I was thinking about this on my way back to the country. I’m certain that Free City holds even more intense and wonderful challenges than I have faced before.

Back in the country, just before departing after talking with Maria and others, I was assigned a mission. An Abyss had been discovered in a village near Free City, and I was told to hunt it.

I was informed I would have a companion, and to my surprise, it was Bowlan. It’s rare for the two of us to be on a mission together, but since she’s accompanying me, the protagonist, it hints at her having a chance to shine.

“Hey, Fei. Let’s grab a meal when this is over! A meal!”

“That’s all you ever think about, isn’t it?”

Fei and Bowlan were running towards their mission destination, exchanging light-hearted banter as they went.

Their speed was unbelievable to ordinary people.

“Whoa!? What’s with that speed!? Are they holy knights!?”

Thanks to the training camp, their strength had increased significantly. Stories tend to give characters who’ve grown stronger after training a chance to show off. This mission was such an event for Bowlan.

Everyone who went there returned stronger.

However, ironically, the one who grew the most was Fei, the stepping stone.

They arrived at the village, and as night fell, they moved to hunt the Abyss. A white, humanoid monster appeared before them.

“Fei, what do we do!?”

“I’ll handle it. You set up a defense line to keep it from reaching the village.”

Fei dashed off at top speed. Bowlan’s eyes widened at the sight of his overwhelming presence.

With each swing of his sword, Fei accurately targeted and destroyed the Abyss’s core. His intense fighting stance was contrasted by his unchanging expression.

(…Seriously? Fei’s gotten so strong! His movements are incredible! Fei is amazing! The way he swung his sword without even looking at the Abyss behind him!! He’s unstoppable, like a demon god!)

Bowlan’s astonishment was justified. Having overcome a major trial, Fei’s strength had grown immensely. Those who knew him before understood the vast difference in his power.

“Bowlan, one’s coming your way.”

“Got it!”

Bowlan had also evolved. With a swift flurry of attacks, she quickly defeated the Abyss. As they finished, dawn began to break.

Fei sheathed his sword and started walking towards the village.

“It’s over. Let’s go back.”

“I know! Fei, you’ve been amazing lately!”

“I’m just doing what’s necessary.”

“You’re so strong it’s surprising! You’re famous among the holy knights!”

“Which circle is that?”

“The female holy knights, especially our peers, say you’re incredible. You’re almost as popular as True!”

“I don’t care about popularity.”

Fei focused only on himself, unconcerned with others’ opinions… or so he thought.

On the way back from the Abyss mission, Bowlan mentioned my popularity among our peers. Hmph, they’ve got good taste, but she also said, “almost as popular as True.”

Come on, anyone who thinks True is cooler has no taste. They’re only looking at appearances. What’s inside is what matters.

After all, my spirit is the spirit of a protagonist. The strongest. I may be weak now, but as the protagonist, I’ll become the strongest. Those who like True probably suck at investing and won’t succeed.

Investment is about putting your money where it will grow in the future. Invest in me. Those who see my greatness will have successful lives.

But those who invest in True, who isn’t a protagonist, still have a long way to go. Though, their opinions will change once they see me in action.

However, being popular among my peers… I’ve been invited out to eat more often lately.

At first, there were no invitations, but they’ve gradually increased.

[Fei, it’s still too early for dating! Your master’s orders are to avoid it!!]

Master Yururu told me that, so I’m not going out! I won’t lose focus until I become the strongest!! Besides, I like Maria the most, she’s the heroine!!

Alright, the mission is over, so let’s head to Free City!! I’ve booked a carriage to Free City! Let’s hurry!! I won’t stop yet!!

And in Free City, once again, I’ll fulfill my role as the protagonist more than anyone else!!

  1. Okay Abyss seems have replaced Daemon? For changes like these it would be best to mention it as a note in the beginning of the chapter.

    1. There was a long time between volume 2 and volume 3 translation that somehow I replaced Daemon with Abyss. And worse in Volume 4 I used Demon instead. Big Mistake Sorry!
