Romelia Senki Volume 2 Chapter 4 part 1

Chapter 4: The Demon King’s Army Arrives from the Sky

Elisabeth sighed as she looked at the dragons covering the sky.

“I see, so this was their trick.”

Instead of breaking through the sealed border, how did they infiltrate the country? Elisabeth knew they had to deal with it before pondering the reason. But she didn’t expect such a method.

Dragons with wings flying through the sky. Should they be called wyverns? There were about a thousand, no, around thirteen hundred of them. Saddles, like those on horses, were attached to the backs of the wyverns, and two demons rode on each, one in front and one in the back. The demon in front held the reins and wore light armor, while the one in the back was heavily armed.

One wyvern landed in the wilderness, and the armed demon jumped off. The demon holding the reins, seemingly a rider, stayed on the wyvern. Excluding the riders, the Demon King’s army consisted of about thirteen hundred soldiers.

“Lady Elisabeth, please withdraw. It’s dangerous here.”

“General Günes, can’t we win?”

Elisabeth questioned General Günes, who suggested retreat.

“The enemy’s forces are superior. We cannot guarantee victory under these conditions.”

General Günes admitted frankly.

“As Countess Romelia said, this is a baiting tactic. The enemy’s real aim is to lure us out and weaken our forces. Thus, they have a plan and ample strength. Fighting here would not be wise.”

“Romelia, what do you think?”

Nodding at General Günes’ words, Elisabeth asked Romelia, who was nearby. She knew that without Romelia’s help, they wouldn’t be able to escape this predicament.

“We have already been spotted by the enemy. Retreating now would be difficult. We should move to the edge of the Balad Forest and set up camp there.”

Romelia pointed to the forest still burning with wildfires.

“Set up camp in a place like that? We’ll be trapped with the fire at our backs!”

“True, there’s no escape route. But that’s where our reinforcements will arrive first. Look.”

Romelia pointed to the forest at General Günes’ words. Armed soldiers emerged from the forest’s edge.

“Is that… our allies? The Romelia Knights! And our Imperial Guards too!”

General Günes saw the flags carried by the soldiers.

Indeed, the Romelia Knights, with the Lily of the Valley flag, numbered eight hundred, and a thousand heavily armed Imperial Guard soldiers led by Commander Ledre, carrying the Crimson Lion flag, were emerging.

“They made it through the wildfire to get here.”

Elisabeth was impressed by the soot-covered Romelia Knights and the Imperial Guards.

“Only a thousand made it through. The remaining three thousand are still in the forest.”

General Günes groaned, but risking the wildfire might not have been the best choice. It was better to be glad about the thousand reinforcements they had.

“With the Imperial Guards and the Cashew Defense Force combined, we have three thousand soldiers. We’re evenly matched. Moreover, if we position ourselves with the wildfire at our backs, we can quickly join up with the guards coming through the wildfire. If we can hold out until then, we will win.”

Romelia explained the advantages of fighting with the wildfire at their backs.

“But we can’t expose the Queen to danger…”

“General Günes, there’s no need to worry. I don’t plan on running away.”

Elisabeth declared her intent not to flee to the hesitant General Günes.

“But, Your Majesty…”

“Running away here is also dangerous. If the enemy lured us out, they must have a plan to prevent our escape.”

Elisabeth predicted the actions of the Demon King’s army, and General Günes couldn’t deny it.

“Understood. But if it comes to it, you must walk through the wildfire.”

Leaving those words, General Günes began organizing the Imperial Guards and preparing to move.

“Let’s move. Al, Ray, prepare.”

At Romelia’s command, soldiers in red and blue armor nodded. They were likely Albion the Flame Knight and Raven the Wind Knight.

“Shloh, Meril, and Rett, gather the wounded.”

Romelia instructed the soldiers with prosthetic limbs, an arm, and a hand.

“Romelia, wait.”

Elisabeth stopped Romelia, who was preparing to move.

“What is it, Your Majesty?”

Romelia turned back to ask. There was a cut on her cheek made by a demon.

Though the bleeding had stopped, indicating it was a minor injury, it was still a wound on a girl’s face. Elisabeth thought Romelia was too unconcerned. The scar would likely remain.

Elisabeth looked at Romelia again. There was no sign of concern about her cheek wound or about Elisabeth standing before her.

Yes, Romelia bore no grudge for what happened three years ago. Despite her dignity as a woman being so deeply hurt, she cared as little for the scar as for her past.

That made Elisabeth somewhat angry, and she felt irritated. But thinking that she was the one bothered by what the other wasn’t, she felt foolish.

Elisabeth sighed, raised her right hand, and placed it on Romelia’s left cheek. White light emanated from her hand, illuminating the wound. When the light subsided, the scar on her left cheek was gone.

“…Tha, nk, you?”

Romelia thanked her hesitantly.

Elisabeth frowned, thinking she could have expressed her gratitude better. But then, the soldiers behind Romelia knelt and bowed their heads towards Elisabeth.

“Queen Elisabeth, thank you for healing Lady Romelia’s wound. On behalf of the Cashew Defense Force, we express our gratitude.”

Knight Albion expressed his gratitude with a bow.

“You’re welcome. I don’t want to be blamed for not arriving in time to prevent scars.”

Elisabeth responded magnanimously, glancing at Romelia, signaling her to learn from this. Romelia awkwardly averted her gaze.

“Now, shall I play the role of a saint?”

Elisabeth murmured as she approached the soldiers with prosthetics and missing limbs.

“What’s your name?”

“I-I’m Meril.”

“Shloh.”

“I’m Rett, Your Majesty.”

The three soldiers with a prosthetic arm, leg, and hand introduced themselves.

“Alright, Meril, this might hurt a bit.”

Elisabeth raised her right hand to Meril, who was missing her left arm. White light emitted from her hand, enveloping Meril. The light vanished in an instant, and Meril clutched her left arm in pain.

But the pain lasted only a moment. As her scream peaked, a white left arm emerged from her short sleeve.

Everyone, including Meril, was astonished at the regenerated left arm.

“Move it slowly. You’ll get used to it.”

Elisabeth then turned to Shloh and Rett.

“You two, remove your prosthetics. They hinder the healing.”

She had Shloh and Rett remove their prosthetics and performed the same treatment.

The three soldiers, now with regenerated limbs, were moved to tears, unable to speak from the overwhelming emotion.

“Thank you, Elisabeth.”

Romelia thanked Elisabeth on behalf of the speechless soldiers.

“You should have shown that sincerity earlier.”

“But my unremarkable face can’t compare to the soldiers’ limbs.”

Albion, Raven, and the healed soldiers chuckled at Romelia’s words.

“This girl really… never mind. Your soldiers are also wounded, aren’t they? I’ll send healers to them, so treat your injured immediately.”

Elisabeth instructed the Imperial Guards to cooperate with the Romelia Knights.

“You’ve changed.”

Romelia spoke in a voice filled with emotion as Elisabeth offered to heal. Indeed, three years ago, she wouldn’t have done such a thing.

“It’s just necessary to win this battle.”

“True, the immediate enemy is the issue. Elisabeth, look at that largest wyvern. Do you see the flag on its back?”

Romelia pointed to a particularly large wyvern among those flying in the sky. It was nearly twice the size of the others. A black flag with a red comet was on its back.

“That comet emblem… that’s likely Garios.”

“Garios? You mean, that Garios?”

Elisabeth asked back.

“Yes, that Garios. The Demon King’s younger brother who defeated Prince Henry on the Dakan Plains.”

Seeing Romelia nod, Elisabeth shuddered.

Garios. That name now echoed across the continent.

Three years ago, Garios had started his reign of terror by defeating Prince Henry in a duel. With his massive strides, he ravaged all the great nations like a storm. Now, that threat had returned to the kingdom.

The battle in the Semed Desert would be like no other.

“Actually, before leaving the capital, I sent letters to Ekaterina and Lü Ji,”

Elisabeth said, mentioning her comrades who had fought alongside her against the Demon King.

She hadn’t anticipated a battle with Garios, but the day before the sortie, she felt an inexplicable unease and sought their help.

“If they had received the letters and come immediately, we should have already met up. But either they were not available, or they had no intention of coming to help…”

Elisabeth sighed, thinking of her missing comrades.

“Either way, we must fight with the forces we have now,”

Romelia stated realistically. Indeed, it was futile to wish for what wasn’t there.

“Queen Elisabeth, it’s time to move. Please prepare,”

General Günes, having completed the gathering of the scattered cavalry units, urged Elisabeth to relocate.

“Understood. See you later, Romelia,”
