Female Soldier Infiltration Volume 3 Chapter 1 part 4

There were vacant seats, so they went to prepare their meals at the buffet-style serving area. As Raze started plating various dishes, Ian joined her by her side.

Deciding on a Japanese-style breakfast while grateful for this Otome game world’s cultural hodgepodge, she helped herself to rice, grilled fish, rolled omelettes, salads, and more. Such menus were supposedly imported from an island nation in the Far East. To avoid getting tired of Western food, these were quite popular, with many nobles adopting chopsticks as a sophisticated habit.

And as Ian selected his breakfast dishes next to her, Raze noticed something.

(….He’s choosing the same things?)

To test it out, she added some miso soup and a small fruit bowl, and Ian followed by also getting miso soup and dessert.

Realizing he was mimicking her, she couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Haha. You can eat what you like, you know?”

“Eh, ah…I thought if I ate the same as Granoli, I might get stronger!”

Caught copying her, Ian’s eyes widened before he finally laughed sheepishly.

A straightforward guy. A different kind of soothing presence compared to Folia.

Raze smiled wryly, “How about that table over there?”, and after indicating a spot, took a seat first.

She placed her tray down and fetched their drinks as well.

“Here you go.”

“Ah, thanks.”

Now that she thought about it, this was her first time being alone with him like this.

She hadn’t expected things to turn out this way, but among the Otome game members, he was probably the most easygoing and approachable. In a good way, he didn’t act very noble-like, which made him more relatable.

“–Well then. What you wanted to ask about was swordsmanship, right Ian?”

As soon as they started eating, she gave in to Ian’s expectant gaze of when she would speak up.

It had been a while since Raze had given anyone advice like this.

(She recalled when Ensign Bahamut was a sergeant)

Raze remembered a sergeant who blamed himself for being utterly useless when an adept lightning mage subordinate used a lightning rod, saying “You’re just an incompetent with the strength of a needle.” He has now overcome that by directly channeling incapacitating lightning into his opponents, growing into an excellent soldier. Quite a formidable foe.

Recalling those old times, Raze got to the point.

Ian, who had taken a seat, swallowed what he had eaten and nodded repeatedly.

“…I’ve been told twice that I’m not cut out for the sword.”

“Oh? By whom, may I ask?”

Though thinking it was rather presumptuous, Ian answered.

“My grandfather and the Student Council President …three if I include Granoli.”

Raze let out an admiring sigh of “I see.”

So there were others who had pointed that out besides herself.

And to be told so by his grandfather implied that he had been striving for the path of the sword for quite some time.

“Ever since being told I’m not cut out for it, I thought I’ve been working hard at it. I thought I had built up decent skill too. But…”

Ian made a fist on his knee.

“Well, you are certainly strong, Lord Ian.”

He glanced sidelong at Raze, as if consolation was unnecessary at this point.

She shrugged.

“But if you’re aiming to become the captain of the knights, it’s not enough.”

“………”

A hint of vexation surfaced at Raze’s definitive words.

The usual him might have retorted that she wouldn’t know, but after his complete defeat at her hands, he couldn’t say anything.

“Lord Ian’s practice sword is special, isn’t it?”

Raze changed the subject.

This was something that had been on her mind since the summer tournament.

“Ah, yes. I had the hilt lengthened compared to regular swords. It gives me a longer reach and is easier to handle.”

“I see. I noticed that.”

She took a sip of tea before continuing.

“Lord Ian, I think you’re more suited to the spear.”

She had been hesitating to say this for a while. Raze turned to face Ian.

“I’ve thought so for a long time. In practical training classes, when we briefly did staff techniques, you alone were remarkably outstanding. Why are you so fixated on the sword and don’t wield a spear instead?”

Ian widened his eyes at those words.

Not a sword, but a spear.

He had never been told that before.

“But, for a knight, you’d normally use a sword, right? Wear it at your waist, ready to protect your lord at any time. The knighting ceremony needed to become a knight is also done with a sword.”

He had always believed that was normal. That was the image of the knight he aspired to be. Ian had never doubted it.

So Raze’s suggestion was completely unconsidered and unexpected.

“Just because the knight order is called the ‘Swords of Cyan,’ does that mean everyone has to wield swords? The military is called the ‘Shields of Cyan,’ you know? Those are just names. As long as you have the strength needed to achieve your goal, be it a spear, bow, scythe, or whatever, it’s all good, isn’t it?”

“W-Well, I suppose so, but…”

“Right? I firmly believe Lord Ian is better suited to the spear than the sword. I’ll assert that. Granted, spears are more difficult to master due to their length and take time, but Lord Ian’s staff techniques were flawless. Had you done any special training?”

Ian then realized something.

“Come to think of it…it was after my grandfather told me that. I started staff training after he suddenly told me to be able to fight like that.”

The staff techniques he began after his grandfather, while still alive, abruptly told him to prepare for it in case –

that may have been a precursor to learning spear techniques.

He had been so focused solely on mastering the sword after his grandfather passed away that he had overlooked that possibility, covering it up.

“That’s why he said it. That I’m not cut out for the sword, but talented with the spear.”

He had no proof, but to Ian, those words from Raze felt like they had come from his grandfather.

It was the moment a long-standing mystery was solved.

“…I see. The spear…the spear, huh.”

He murmured it to himself, even wondering why he had never realized it before.

Perhaps he never needed that custom sword in the first place.

“Personally, I think the spear has the advantage over the sword. People say it’s weak at close range, but if you can fight in formations, it’s no issue. What do you say? Why not reconsider your weapon of choice, even at this point?”

“Yeah—! I’ll do that!”

Nodding deeply as if settling his thoughts, Ian’s sincere eyes looked ahead.

“Want to spar a bit outside once we finish eating?”

Raze smiled contentedly at his expression and asked Ian.

“Sure!”

He responded with his usual gleaming, carefree smile.

“I apologize for it being secondhand, but please use this if you’d like.”

After a quick breakfast, the two moved as if urged to hurry.

Since it was still lightly snowing, at the edge of the dormitory entrance, Raze first took out a spear with a blunted spearhead that she had prepared from an empty space.

“…Granoli really has everything, huh?”

Ian blinked rapidly.

“W-Well, this just happened to be here. Just happened to.”

“Heh~ Then I’m the lucky one!”

She couldn’t reveal that the weapons and rations stashed in her hideouts and storehouses scattered across the country could be summoned via teleportation magic.

Relieved by Ian’s positive remark, Raze handed it over, thanking him. He unhesitatingly grasped the spear.

Ian gazed intently at his new weapon.

As Raze had gauged, the length of the initial spear she prepared seemed just right when he wielded it.

“Secondhand, you said…?”

Ian, having noticed something, turned to Raze, who had been observing.

The spear was heavier with its center of mass towards the spearhead compared to those prepared at the academy. If swung around, its speed would increase, requiring considerable physical ability to wield properly.

Looking closer, the grip showed many scars – clear signs of being used in actual combat. He found it curious.

“Ah, yes, it’s a used item. My apologies.”

“I see!”

It was one Raze had actually used for slaying monsters, but that wasn’t a lie. Spears were good for imparting centrifugal force and had long reach, so she often used them against massive monsters appearing in Barouda or when unknown species seemed too dangerous to approach. She had many on hand. Raze prepared one for herself too as she answered Ian.

“We don’t have much time left, so let’s have a light practice session.”

This time, she properly used magic to create a rain shelter, and they went to a nearby grove.

After confirming the basic stance, they practiced swinging motions. Raze was impressed as Ian handled it effortlessly, displaying skill beyond that of a beginner. The length of the short spear she gave him seemed to be just the right fit, allowing him to bring out his strengths.

(….A prodigy….isn’t he?)

As Raze had anticipated, Ian’s movements were indeed unlike those of a novice.

The length of the spear she provided seemed to match him perfectly, allowing him to strike at just the right spots.

Since he was already adept with staff techniques, if he could get used to the feel and handling of the spearhead, he would undoubtedly grow strong enough to be unmatched.

“How about it? The spear?”

Stopping their spar, Raze asked.

Ian gazed at the spear in his hand, then took a stance with it and nodded firmly.

“It feels right.”

“Doesn’t it? I was surprised too. I never imagined you could handle the spear this well. Honestly, it exceeds my expectations.”

Spear techniques are not something that can be easily mastered. Unlike swords, they allow for more versatility as a weapon. And with the blade being separated from the body, the difficulty in using them is higher.

Yet in their earlier spar, Ian maneuvered the spear without letting the spearhead come close to his body at all.

They may have just uncovered an astounding talent of his.
