World Doomed by Card Games Volume 1 Chapter 3 part 2

A light novel-style protagonist case : Yatogami

I am Yatogami.

An agent of the Secret Dark Card Countermeasures Agency, known as the Dark Card Agency.

Yatogami is a codename, not my real name,

but I quite like how cool it sounds.

Organizations called “agencies” like the Dark Card Agency resolve various Ignition Fight-related incidents.

Well-known ones like the “Neo Card Police” and the “Special Ignition Incident Response Office” (nicknamed Special Fire) are known to the public.

These organizations vary in scale, with some being government-recognized and others not.

My agency, the Dark Card Agency, falls into the latter category.

However, our existence is acknowledged by the government, and we sometimes work in conjunction with official organizations, so we’re not exactly a shady group.

Well, we do get a few sour looks from the Neo Police and others when we, a student-heavy agency, show up at crime scenes.

Even so, we’re agents too, with a genuine desire to resolve incidents.

I became an agent not too long ago.

My sister and I were caught up in the “Hounds” incident.

There, my sister fought to protect me but ended up losing.

When they were about to force me into a Dark Fight as well, someone from the Dark Card Agency came to our rescue.

That’s when I learned that my sister had been an agent of the Dark Card Agency.

With no parents around, my sister had been working part-time jobs while also dueling in Ignition Fights, taking care of me too.

I could hardly believe it. My sister, who always seemed so composed, had been dueling battles over the Demon Cards in secret.

When I found out, I felt utterly pathetic.

While I was living a carefree life, she had been working so hard.

Naturally, when I learned the truth, I decided to become an agent of the Dark Card Organization to rescue her.

The organization opposed my decision, of course.

But I proved myself by passing the organization’s grueling entrance exam.

I became an agent,

and the fact that I cleared the exam on my first attempt made waves—it was a first in the organization’s history.

Even so, I was still just an inexperienced girl.

Every day, I struggled to fight the “Hounds,” causing trouble for my superiors and fellow agents alike.

The National Ignition Fight Tournament, where my sister was set to compete, was drawing near.

I had to save her before it was too late. That sense of urgency began to wear me down bit by bit.

It was during such a time that I had a close brush with defeat against a high-ranking Hound officer.

My superior saved me at the last moment but told me I needed to take a break.

But what else could I do besides work as an agent?

Even on my day off, when I heard that civilians nearby were being attacked by the Hounds, I rushed to the scene in the dead of night.

That was when I met Mitsuru Tanafuda, the manager of the card shop “Duelist.”

Card store “Duelist”.

There are several card stores in this town, but if you ask them which one is the most prosperous, they will all say “Duelist”

Its state-of-the-art Ignition Field,

unmatched card selection,

and reasonable prices make it a favorite among locals.

Although I hadn’t visited much before,

And one more thing.

everyone in the area knew about the shop’s manager.

When someone mentioned “the manager,” they were almost always referring to him.

Despite his young age, Mitsuru’s skills were said to rival those of top professionals.

In fact, he was reportedly friends with the reigning champion of the professional league, which made his strength all the more believable.

Yet, despite his abilities,

no one had ever seen him involved in any major incidents.

Normally, someone that skilled would have saved the world a time or two by now,

so rumors of a deep secret surrounding him abounded.

Still, it was an unspoken rule not to pry into his past.

He had already resolved one incident.

If he chose not to speak about it, I shouldn’t try to pry into it.

That’s why his secret remains a secret even now.

Though occasionally, I hear some people try to lift the veil of this “mystery.”

I thought it was better to let mysteries remain mysterious.

When I first met him, he had just repelled an assassin from “Hound” and obtained the demon card that Hound drops when defeated.

Though I didn’t tell him, he was the first civilian to survive an attack by “Hound.”

The demon cards from “Hound” are extremely troublesome, with incredibly high potential for one-hit kills.

That’s why even skilled players often lose before they can demonstrate their true abilities.

As expected of an expert, it was amazing how he defeated the demon card’s monster without breaking a sweat.

The next day, I actually fought against him.

Though I thought someone inexperienced like me couldn’t possibly win against him, it turned out to be quite a close match.

Although I narrowly lost in the end, I gained a bit of confidence in myself.

Above all, he reminded me of the joy of dueling that I had forgotten.

I promised him that I had to fulfill the promise to visit “Duelist” with my sister, after all concluded.

I vowed to do so with all my heart.

After that…

I had a rematch with a Hound high rank and defeated them.

My companions continued to defeat other high rankers, cornering Hound.

However, at that time, my sister appeared as Hound’s top executive.

Apparently, my sister had been controlled by Hound’s mastermind, and she clashed with my superior—the strongest fighter in the Dark Card Organization.

The result was my superior’s defeat.

While Hound’s one-hit kills were terrible, my controlled sister was incredibly strong.

In the end, my superior entrusted me with saving my sister before their soul was taken away.

Everything was turbulent after that.

The Dark Card Organization fell into crisis, with captured people being brainwashed into enemies.

My superior was among them, standing as a formidable enemy alongside my sister.

I somehow managed to hold together the crumbling Dark Card Organization and launch a counterattack.

To cut to the conclusion, we won.

The trump card for our reversal was my sister’s card.

Actually, when we were attacked, my sister didn’t have the rare card that Hound was trying to steal.

When I realized this, I found my sister’s cards and a message for me at home.

Encouraged by the message, I rebuilt my deck, and the final battle began with me at its center.

I managed to defeat one of the high rankers, my sister, and Hound’s mastermind, bringing the incident to a close.

Even I have to admit it was an impressive achievement for a rookie.

Well, I did go overboard in the end, and if my sister, who had returned to her senses, hadn’t come to help, I really would have had my soul taken away.

I made her cry because of that.

We managed to win and return to our daily lives.

Of course, there’s still plenty to think about, like the aftermath and my future as an agent, given the unusual circumstances of my recruitment.

That day, my sister and I came to the card shop “Duelist.”

Being the weekend, the shop was very busy.

As we entered the shop together—

“Oh, welcome,”

the shop manager casually greeted us, and I couldn’t hold back my tears.

If he hadn’t reminded me of the joy of dueling back then, I might not have maintained my sense of self until my sister came to save me.

Also, when I found the rare card in my sister’s room, I also found a receipt from this shop.

I really can’t thank the shop manager enough… that’s what I thought.

TIP: Special summons from the append deck, such as [EXTREME SUMMON], are listed in monster effects. However, these special summoning methods are keyword effects and may be omitted when monster effects become too lengthy.
