World Doomed by Card Games Volume 1 Chapter 1

  1. The card shop manager has no history.

The world began with a single card——

That’s how it’s solemnly proclaimed in one world.

A world where card games could lead to the world’s destruction.

Anime themed around trading card games often have outrageous premises.

The idea that cards created or destroyed the world is typical of this.

It’s so common that questioning it is pointless.

If one were reborn into such a world, how should they react?

Would you think it’s nonsense? Get angry at being mocked?

For an ordinary person, those would be understandable reactions.

However, I am an otaku who has indulged in trading card games to some degree.

Honestly, even if card games could destroy the world, this world where card games come first has great appeal.

The game monsters can physically manifest –

a so-called Solid Vision system to create immersive monster battles.

Strength at card games is highly valued.

There’s a certain romantic notion that card games secretly determine the world’s fate.

As a trading card game otaku, life in this world is quite enjoyable.

When it comes to trading card games, there are card shops.

In this world, I’ve opened my dream card shop.

It’s the best way for me to be involved with cards here.

However, as the lord of this little domain, I have a certain “problem.”

It is this——

In the city of Tenka, a regional town in a certain prefecture.

My shop is a short walk from what could be considered the city center around the station.

I purchased and opened an entire two-story building as my shop.

The first floor is glassed-in so you can see inside, with card posters lining the windows.

Above hangs a board with the shop’s name engraved on it:

Card Shop “Duelist.”

That’s the name of the shop I opened.

I borrowed the name from a famous major trading card game series.

I think little indulgences like that are important.

“Alright, let’s start today’s shop tournament finals. The duelists, please proceed to the central field.”

My voice echoes through the shop interior.

Just inside is an area with free tables, and further back is a kind of stage area.

The walls are lined with showcases and storage displaying our merchandise.

Today is the day of the weekend shop tournament.

The shop tournament concept is generally the same as in my previous world.

The tournament rules vary by shop, but ours uses a Swiss draw double-elimination format.

And the finals of that tournament are about to take place.

The main difference from reality is that the duelists stand on a broad stage-like “field” set up in the center of the shop.

Today’s duelists are two young elementary school boys.

One is a hot-blooded boy with spiked two-toned hair, the other a cool boy with a bluish, calmer hairstyle.

They look just like a protagonist and his rival.

In fact, these two are rivals who resolved some major incident together.

Perfectly in line with the residents of a hobby anime world.

“I’m going to beat you this time!”

“Hmph, no matter how many times, I’m still stronger.”

The two banter like rivals, then shout in unison:

“Ignition!”

The card game in this world is called “Ignition Fight.”

Personally, I think there are trading card games derived from “Magic: The Gathering” that use mana and other costs as resource systems, and non-cost games like “Yu-Gi-Oh.”

Ignition Fight…or just Ignition for short, is of the latter variety.

You could say it’s essentially a variant of Yu-Gi-Oh.

The field the two boys stand on is called the “Ignition Field” – allowing monsters to manifest in reality.

Within this field, monsters can freely run amok.

The sheer visceral thrill of seeing that for the first time was something else.

“My turn to go first!”

“Fine, I’ll let you.”

The boys begin their battle – what this world calls an Ignition Fight – on the field.

Some spectators watch intently, while others play casual games at the tables beside the field.

Small monsters scurry back and forth across those tabletops as well.

The tables must have a function to manifest monsters too.

My shop is a small regional one.

So we only have space for a single dedicated dueling field.

Normally, use of the main field requires a reservation.

If you want an impromptu duel, you either use the tables or go outside.

This world has portable dueling fields akin to Duel Disks.

But using those takes up space, so it’s impossible for everyone in the shop to duel with them at once.

Hence, being able to use the main field in the finals is a prize in itself.

Well, putting those worldly concerns aside, the boys wage an intense duel.

“Go! !”

“Kuh…Counter it, !”

Their ace monsters clash – an awesomely designed dragon and a sinister death god motif monster.

The dragon swings its hooked claws as the reaper blocks with its scythe.

Dragon breathes fire, two titans struggling… Eventually the dragon emerges victorious.

“Then, by effect! Return one card from the Cemetery to the bottom of the Deck, and send the top Deck card to the Cemetery! If it’s a Monster, we get to battle again!”

The hot-blooded boy seems intent on securing victory.

An ace monster with a battle-related effect really livens up the duel.

Especially befitting the protagonist’s ace.

Making me recall a certain banned protagonist ace card.

In the end, the hot-blooded boy wins the duel.

“Alright!!”

“Kuh…”

Normally the calm boy is stronger, but unusually hot-blooded won today.

“That’s it for the championship, congratulations Necca.”

I approach the two as I speak.

Necca is the hot-blooded boy’s name,

and the calmer one is Crow.

“manager! Heheh, I’m the strongest after all!”

“Don’t get too cocky, Crow could still beat you.”

“Yeah yeah.”

hot-blooded protagonists do tend to get overconfident. Typical, but also part of staying positive I suppose.

“manager! Let me duel you next! Come on!”

“No fair Necca, I want to duel the manager too.”

The boys make that request, as youths their age are wont to do during a card game.

It’s an endearing sight, but I am the manager of the stor.

“No can do, there are plenty of other customers right now.”

“Aww, come on!”

Necca shoots me an aggrieved look as he pleads.

But giving me that look won’t work, the good sisters of the world wouldn’t approve.

Or rather—

“It’s fine, I can handle the shop myself while the manager duels. That would just concentrate the customers over there.”

At that moment,

the girl who works part-time at my shop, silently making original card packs while observing the tournament, speaks up.

The petite but not childlike girl has silver hair, wearing frilled casual clothes with the shop’s apron over them.

The huge stack of original packs she’s made indicates she has some free time—

No, that’s too many, isn’t it?

In any case, the boys’ eyes light up at her words.

In fact, the entire shop becomes energized.

Me dueling as the main event…?

As I ponder that, a mysterious voice interrupts:

“It seems ‘that time’ has come…”

Suddenly, a samurai appears from the entrance.

An actual samurai, dressed traditionally with a sword at his side.

His extremely out-of-place intrusion causes the shop to fall deathly silent.

“Card Shop ‘Duelist’ proprietor, Tanafuda Mitsuru! I shall judge the truth of your strength myself!”

The samurai thrusts his cards at me as he speaks.

It seems he too aims to unravel the ‘mystery’ of my true power.

“…Hey, Crow.”

“Yeah, I know Necca. That guy…he’s legit.”

The skilled Duelist boys calmly analyze the samurai’s prowess.

I can sense he’s no ordinary opponent myself. But that aside—

“…Sorry, but my duels are first-come-first-served. Mind if I prioritize the customers who were here first?”

I calmly inform him of the policy.

The samurai apologetically accepts with an “I understand…”

My problem is

that for some reason, people in this world treat me like the protagonist from the previous work.

The mysterious samurai’s appearance is proof of that.

He must have traveled from afar after hearing rumors of my strength.

Being considered strong isn’t bad per se.

In fact, perhaps due to being a reincarnator, I have good drawing ability and confidence in my skills.

However, the fact is—

Unlike those hot-blooded boys, I don’t have some major incident in my background that I overcame.

Yet for some reason, people adamantly believe I’m like a past protagonist who resolved a crisis bdidn’t tell anyone about it. ────

TIP: Ignition Fight is a non-resource trading card game. The simple rules are reduce your opponent’s Life to 0 or mill their Deck to win. Destroyed cards go to the “Cemetery,” monster effects are called “effects,” and non-monster effects are “Counter Effects.”
