Who Killed the Hero? Volume 2 Chapter 7 part 2

“At your age, your magical power won’t increase much. But since you haven’t trained your body until now, your stamina can improve. If you can cast spells while running, it’ll broaden your options in battle.”

When Leonard told her this, Sophia obediently trained her body.

She was told that Lei had undergone the same training.

As a daily routine, She imposed running training on herself, practicing casting spells while out of breath.

At first, it didn’t go well, but after continuing for half a year, She became able to recite spells while running. It was thanks to this that Sophia managed to escape from the hobgoblins in Arkand.

“Next, work on improving your magic precision. Magical power might be an innate talent, but precision comes from effort. Even weak magic can be effective if it hits the right spot. It should be an effective tactic when dealing with demons.”

This was apparently another magical training that Lei had been doing.

Leonard was constantly preoccupied with thinking of ways to defeat the demons.

He seriously intended to defeat Belzera with just four people.

He was strategizing for various scenarios: if Belzera had a large number of guards, if she had a small number of elite guards, or if it were lucky enough to find her alone.

Having only three demon guards was actually one of the better scenarios they had anticipated.

However, that doesn’t mean the battle would be easy. Not at all.

There is no way tha A mage normally able to face even one demon alone, in principle.

They’re trying to make up for it by improving physical strength and magic precision.

‘…No, it’s not enough. We probably don’t stand a chance as things are.’

In fact, weak magic has barely damaged the demons at all.

Leonard’s basic strategy assumes that the other three will draw the attention of Belzera’s guards while he defeats Belzera. If he can defeat Belzera, Leonard can then come to aid.

In previous battles with demons, which were treated as training for this day, Leonard always fought the demon while the three drew the attention of other monsters.

In other words, if Leonard fails to defeat Belzera, they’ll all fall together.

(I wish reinforcements would come soon…)

To be honest, Sophia wasn’t expecting much from reinforcements.

She thought she might not be able to hold out even if Leonard succeeded.

(But that’s okay)

Despite being saved by Lei, she had spent her life aimlessly.

She had no regrets about returning to being an adventurer after Leonard dragged her back in.

Sophia had been using magic that consumed little magical power to fight for as long as possible, but her limit was approaching. Even though she had built up her physical strength, she was still just a mage after all. She was no match for a demon. The distance she had been maintaining with magic was gradually shrinking.

(It seems Leonard won’t make it in time after all)

She retreated backward, mustering her last bit of strength.

She intended to hit the pursuing demon with the strongest spell she could use.

It was a forbidden technique that converted life force into magical power.

Using it would mean certain death, but it could take the demon down with her. However, because of its high power, she wanted to keep as much distance as possible from her companions.

As she ran with her last ounce of strength, she saw a man standing in her path.

(Who?)

A thin man with a nervous-looking face, wearing a purple wizard’s robe and holding a large staff. He was clearly nothing but a mage.

“Were you planning to lure the demon and cast some self-destructive spell? Well, not a bad idea. For a mage of your caliber, that’s probably the only way to win. Either way, I don’t think you can defeat the demon.”

(Don’t spell out what I was trying to do!)

Sophia wanted to shout this, but she swallowed her words when she heard the man start chanting a spell.

[Red flame, spirit of fire, blazing inferno, respond to my call with the wisdom of ancient secret arts…]

Although greatly abbreviated, it seemed to be a fire spell similar to what Sophia used. Moreover, the chanting speed was fast. Could a spell even work like that?

As Sophia was surprised, the man casually completed the magic.

When she turned around, she saw crimson flames piercing through the demon in an ultra-high density.

Demons normally have high resistance to magic, making it difficult to inflict significant damage even with high-level fire spells. However,

[Guaaa!]

If the range of Sophia’s magic was 100, the range of the man’s magic was only about 1. But in exchange, the flames had become like red light, penetrating the demon’s body. It was clear that the firepower was on a completely different level.

“Fools can only use magic as they’ve been taught. But if you can fully understand, control, and make magic your own, things like this become possible. This is the result of my research with my friends.”

The man seemed to be mocking both the demon and Sophia.

He was still a young man in his early twenties, and his condescending attitude was irritating, but his ability was undoubtable. Sophia had once been called a genius, but she was no match for him.

“Who are you?”

“Even after seeing this spell, you don’t know who I am? You’re a mage lacking in insight, aren’t you?”

The man shook his head as if exasperated.

“I’m Solon. People call me the Great Sage.”

Solon’s Inferno accurately incinerated the demon’s heart, bringing it to its death.

Typically, a cleric’s role is to heal. They don’t stand on the front lines to fight. However, if asked whether it’s completely impossible, the answer is no. Because God is great. He can make any miracle possible.

Of course, a price is demanded.

Now, Nina had embodied the power of God within herself.

This was through a miracle called [divine descent]. It’s a secret technique that allows one to invite a god into their body and gain its power.

Of course, the god doesn’t actually descend.

Strictly speaking, it only makes the user believe so, allowing them to perceive the god to the fullest extent and thus gain its power.

It might seem like a very effective technique, but humans are not gods. Naturally, there’s a limit to the power they can receive, and more importantly, it puts a great strain on the body. If it’s just for physical enhancement, it’s more efficient to let warriors fight. That’s why even high-ranking clerics rarely use this technique.

Yet Nina was using it.

Her body felt burning hot. She felt as if her blood was boiling, her internal organs melting. She had tried to accustom her body to this by practicing on monsters several times in preparation for this day, but facing a demon was a different matter altogether.

A slight increase in physical abilities wouldn’t make any difference. She had to push to the limit just to be able to face the green demon.

The green demon’s weapon was a club.

Nina nimbly dodged the swung club, and the powerful blow that lost its target shattered the ground. Nina immediately stepped in and struck the demon’s arm with her rod.

Even with her enhanced body, she was still just a cleric and couldn’t inflict much damage.

But that was fine. Nina’s role, like Efsei and Sophia, was to draw the demon’s attention. It was enough if she could make her opponent think “how annoying.”

Moreover, the fact of “being struck by a mere cleric” was humiliating for the proud demon. Leonard had taught her this.

“Those demons, despite their appearance, have pride like knights. If you hurt that pride a bit, they should eagerly chase after you,” he had said.

Leonard was a terrible man.

He said that human life was worth less than gold coins and declared that money was the most important thing.

It’s rare to find someone who says such things so bluntly. Even merchants don’t say it openly. But indeed, money was important.

Leonard, true to his word, bought the lives of refugees with money.

In exchange for money, he provided housing and food, saving the lives of people who had fled from other countries. And now, he was fighting to continue protecting those lives.

For us, it also had the meaning of avenging what happened fifteen years ago, but this battle carried a greater significance.

(That’s why we can’t let Leonard fail)
