Geek Mob Mercenary Chapter 88

Mob No.88: “Welcome… Oh it’s you. Looks like you didn’t get to meet that shady minister friend of the neighboring country after all.”

The long conversation with Ms. Rossweisse went something like this.

First, there was a lot of complaining about being hit on and insulted by some military nobles. And recruitment attempts for both Lambert and her into the military. These complaints made up the majority.

Other topics were:

When she reunited with Ms. Gerhilde.

How Ms. Gerhilde was happy Ms. Rossweisse found a partner like Lambert.

How Ms. Gerhilde declared she would find a partner too, and came to the battlefield with them.

How much Lambert has grown, no longer fainting, and becoming quite strong in combat.

She even told me her lack of an avatar was due to budget reasons.

Other than the complaints, I think it was pretty useful information, but thanks to it my sleep time was cut by 4 hours. With 2 hours spent on machine maintenance, refueling, buying food and drink, I only had 6 hours left.

Still better than no sleep, so I immediately slept after Ms. Rossweisse hung up.

By the time I woke up, it was almost time to leave the colony.

Since waking up is dangerous, and to avoid the usual congestion, I waited until everyone else left the colony, then was the last to leave and head home to Ytts.

Though with the gates, it takes over twice as long as getting there.

After departing, 2 whole days of travel, I barely made it safely back to the mercenary guild on Planet Ytts by a little past noon on the third day.

I wanted to go straight home, but I still had to pay Uncle Roans, so I headed to the lobby with the guild reception.

In that lobby, [Plumed Helmet] Lambert and Arthur, who became a knight for his deeds this time, were being celebrated by the whole guild.

Though guarding the Emperor, they apparently still saw combat since they were mercenaries after all. These two seemed to have been quite active there.

Among the crowd were Ms. Rossweisse and Ms. Saira too.

I avoided the hustle and went to Uncle Roans’ window.

“I’m back.”

“Good to see I didn’t get stiffed.”

We bumped fists, smiling.

“The reward’s already in. Uniform 500,000 credits for mercs I hear.”

“Fast and generous. I figured some stingy noble would try stiffing us.”

The Earl of Ikorai from the terrorist subjugation on Planet Teulla was fast, but since he didn’t join the recent rebellion, with the similarly awful nobles in the military and government, trying to give as little as possible or outright stiff us would be normal.

“It’s His Majesty’s consideration, I hear.”

“That’s appreciated.”

Even if it’s just populism, this kind of thoughtfulness is probably why the current Emperor is so popular.

While thinking about that, I finished my business and exchanged some words with Uncle Roans, then left the still boisterous guild.

First I went to the bank and transferred 170 million credits, a third of this job’s reward, to my parents as living expenses. It’s actually 166,666,666… but I rounded to a clean 170 million.

The streets were filled with joyous voices about the end of the rebellion, the lifting of martial law and information controls letting people learn many awful nobles were arrested, and displays and posters praising the Emperor everywhere.

The black market shopping district was no exception, but the displays and poster messages were more dubious, like [Praise the sacred empress who holds the treasures of the deep seas!] and [We offer our bloodlines to the bloody empress of justice!]

The meat shop from before had a sign for a [Feast commemorating the sentencing of fools], and was selling [Progeny of dragons fallen to filth – Denizen of the abyssal depths] and [Progeny of dragons fallen to filth – The creeping, ever-changing scourge] for 50 credits per 200g. Since they’d just fried some up, I ended up buying 400g of [Progeny of dragons fallen to filth – Denizen of the abyssal depths].

Shops like a deli with specials on [Mandrake salad] and [Tender braised orc meat], a grocer with [Jack O’Lanterns on sale!] and [Golden apples – 2 peaches off!] and a liquor store with a [New nectar shipment!] sign also caught my eye.

Enjoying the unique hustle and bustle of the shopping district, I headed to Patterson’s Pharmacy.

The pharmacy interior was same as always, with Gonzalez reading a newspaper.

“Yo.”

So like normal, I entered the pharmacy and

“Welcome… Oh it’s you. Looks like you didn’t get to meet that shady minister friend of the neighboring country after all.”

“Sounds like he was on the battlefield but ran away once [The Demon God] showed up.”

I grabbed a chair and sat across the counter.

“Well that let you live, right?”

“I think the 11th Fleet being there helped a lot too.”

We had our usual exchange.

“So, need anything?”

“The usual candy. And thanks for the map that ended up useless but I’m grateful for.”

“I see.”

As he lined up the usual candy on the counter, Gonzalez said

“If you’re thanking me, you should’ve brought a souvenir or something.”

So I put the [Progeny of dragons fallen to filth – Denizen of the abyssal depths] I bought earlier on the counter.

“That’s from Arrown’s Magical Beast Meatery huh.”

“It was freshly fried so I couldn’t help it…”

Gonzalez took two carbonated drinks from the fridge and handed me one, so I opened the container of [Progeny of dragons fallen to filth – Denizen of the abyssal depths]. Still warm of course, steaming.

Then we silently toasted with the carbonated drinks. No satisfying sound since they were plastic bottles though.

Incidentally, 3 months after this day,

Conscripted commoners who participated in the rebellion were fined 12 million credits, or up to 2 years penal servitude.

Commoners who voluntarily joined the uprising got a minimum 5 years hard labor, with further severe punishments decided individually.

Forced noble participants were fined 540 million credits, or up to 5 years penal servitude.

Nobles who voluntarily participated had their peerage and territories seized, then a minimum 10 years hard labor, with execution in some cases.

And the central masterminds of the uprising had their peerage and territories seized, then public execution.

Some nobles hoped to appeal or contest it, but were denied.

It turns out the amount of the Mob’s father’s debt greatly changes the Mob’s annual income.

Shared conditions:

  • The Mob pays it off over 7 years, completing payment by the deadline.
  • The Mob’s income fluctuates annually, so the total is averaged.
  • The Mob allocates 1/3 of income to the debt, so income is 3 times remittances.
  • No consideration of the parents repaying, only the Mob’s remittances.
  • Fractions of a credit rounded down.

Condition 1: The debt was 50 million

Annual remittance is 7,142,857 credits, so annual income is 21,428,571 credits.

Condition 2: The debt was 100 million

Annual remittance is 14,285,714 credits, so annual income is 42,857,142 credits.

Condition 3: The debt was 200 million

Annual remittance is 28,571,428 credits, so annual income is 85,714,284 credits.

Considering he was framed by some idiot noble and forced to retire, I think around 100 million is likely.

I think he earned a fair amount in years 3-6 after a small income the first 2 years.
