The Transformed Office
“That’s reassuring. Shall we continue with the test then? Excecutive Officer, are you ready?”
“Yes, Captain. We’re ready at any time.”
“Then let’s proceed with the dimensional navigation. Please make the ship-wide announcement and start immediately after.”
“Yes, understood.”
With that, Sister Meyrica took out the microphone for the ship-wide announcement and informed everyone on board about the dimensional navigation test.
Although we were already navigating at Level 2, we didn’t know what lay ahead, so we made the announcement just in case. Once the test was over, we wouldn’t need to make such announcements every time.
“Navigation Officer Rani, prepare for dimensional navigation.”
“Dimensional navigation preparations complete. Safety confirmation of the target point finished.”
When performing dimensional navigation, it’s impossible to directly confirm the safety of the arrival point.
The Dimensional Navigation Management Bureau, a government office, only confirms the location of ships that have submitted navigation plans.
Of course, for military-related navigation, they don’t bother with such things and only confirm safety when exiting the dimensional space.
This is a routine procedure, but it’s a measure to prevent accidents that could occur if we suddenly appeared in front of someone, startling them.
Well, even though these troublesome tasks are mostly left to computers, we still took precautionary measures since we weren’t a military vessel.
“Alright, let’s begin. Excecutive Officer, if you please.”
“Understood, Captain. Navigation Officer, initiate Inter-dimensional navigation at Level 5.”
“Initiating dimensional navigation at Level 5.”
During dimensional navigation, there’s hardly any change inside the ship.
If anything, there might be even less change in inertial force compared to normal navigation.
“Dimensional navigation complete. Confirming current location. Deviation from target point is within acceptable range. Test results are favorable.”
“Good, everything’s going smoothly. Let’s keep increasing the level and head towards the Nim star system. Excecutive Officer, continue the test.”
“Understood.”
After that, we continued dimensional navigation, increasing the level one by one, and soon cleared our target of Level 10.
“There seem to be no issues with navigation. We can definitely accommodate Her Highness without any problems.”
“Thank you. We’ll return to the capital star system without stopping at the Nim system.”
“Are we heading back?”
“No, once we return to the capital star system, we’ll conduct weapons tests by getting as close to the supernova as possible. Of course, we won’t have Her Highness on board during situations where weapons are used, but we’ll confirm the armaments in areas where the laser cannon, this ship’s specialty, can’t be used. We’ll use the space torpedoes and the railgun we call ‘Morning Glory’ for the test. Once that’s done, we’ll return to the capital. How does this sound?”
“That’s fine. I’m just a passenger on board to check this ship. I’ll ask about things I don’t understand, but everything else is up to you, Captain.”
This was the kind of conversation I had with Captain Ford on the bridge as we continued the tests.
The tests themselves went smoothly, but during this period, I hardly spoke with Chief Sardar.
I heard from Maria that he had been talking a lot with the weapons staff and was disappointed that the weapons tests hadn’t been conducted yet.
Those weapons tests were carried out after the dimensional navigation test, so Chief Sardar was in an extremely good mood.
He had either been completely influenced by Maria or had become obsessed with Morning Glory No. 5.
Well, it’s understandable for someone who used to be a weapons researcher.
After all, that Morning Glory was a railgun, which had become lost technology in the present day.
He was overjoyed that this lost technology had been revived, and it seems he also revised his views on torpedoes.
Even in places where radar couldn’t be used, while tracking and guidance weren’t possible, they could still be fired straight.
With optical processing, they could still be quite effective.
It was just a matter of devising tactical uses.
He seemed to have realized that even weapons he had never paid attention to before could be utilized effectively in certain situations.

And so, after a week of successful tests, we returned.
This time too, we used the guest route and landed at Spot No. 5.
After landing, I took Captain Ford and Chief Sardar to the office in that skyscraper.
In the government office skyscraper, we passed through the security gate without going through reception and headed up in the elevator.
We had received ID cards that doubled as entry passes when we got our official appointments.
Unlike the previous experience of not being able to enter our own ship, we reached our destination on the top floor without issue, but we were all surprised.
Even Captain Ford, who should have been acquainted with Her Highness much longer than I, was dumbfounded.
There seemed to be still some space on the floor, but there were people everywhere.
My expression might be odd, but at least when I came here last time, there was hardly anyone around.
It had looked like the interior of a building under construction, but now people were busily working here and there.
What surprised us most was that we couldn’t enter the office from the elevator hall.
There was another security gate here, and even a receptionist.
That receptionist was currently dealing with someone else.
The whole floor really seemed busy.
When we tried to pass through the gate again using our entry passes, this time we got an error message.
Another hold-up at the security gate.
Was this a recurrence of that nightmare?
For now, it seemed we might be able to sort things out if we went through reception, but unfortunately, the receptionist was still dealing with someone else.
“Well, I guess we have no choice but to wait.”
“Yes, but I’m surprised. To think it’s changed so much, it makes me feel like we’ve been left behind.”
“Yes, I’ve been shuffled around to different workplaces until now, so I’m used to this sort of thing, but I understand how you feel, Captain. I feel sorry for making you go through this with us.”
“What are you saying, Captain? We’re in a transitional period now. Her Highness has staked this country’s future on this project. This speed of preparation must be a manifestation of his determination. It’s certainly surprising, but we should be proud of Her Highness’s abilities.”
“Yes, but still… these abilities are amazing. Why is it called a hobby?”
“Ah, where did you hear that rumor?”
“Oh, was that inappropriate? I heard it in the military personnel department…”
“No, it’s not inappropriate, but this work will fundamentally change the way things have been done until now, so there’s pressure from opposition forces from various quarters. That rumor is one of them. But looking at this place now, we can proudly say it’s different, though the people spreading rumors probably don’t care about that.”
As I was having this conversation with Captain Ford, someone called out to us from behind.
“Captain Nao. I’m sorry. It seems we had a misunderstanding.”
“Huh? Sister Maki… no, Chief Maki?”
“Yes, but now I’m the [Shunmin] Grand Office Director. Nice to meet you, Captain.”
“Huh? You got promoted? That’s amazing.”
“Ahem. This isn’t private time, Captain.”
“Ah. I apologize.”
“Captain, that lady is…”
“I’m sorry for the late introduction, Captain Ford. I’m Maki Bruce, in charge of the [Shunmin] Grand Office. I’ve known Captain Nao since our orphanage days, and until recently, I was assigned to administrative duties in the Coast Guard.”
“Well, well, I haven’t introduced myself either. I’m Ford, the captain of Her Highness’s space cruiser. Pleased to meet you. By the way, you mentioned a misunderstanding earlier?”
“Ah, yes, I apologize. I went up to welcome the captains, but unfortunately, we missed each other. I hurried back, but it seems I didn’t make it in time.”
“Ah, I see. The docking went so smoothly that we arrived earlier than expected. More importantly…”
“Yes, that’s why I went up to welcome you. Your ID cards haven’t been registered for this security gate yet, so you couldn’t enter. That’s why I hurried up to welcome you, but I didn’t make it in time. Her Highness is probably waiting, so I’ll guide you inside. I’ll register your cards later so there won’t be any problems next time.”
I was guided to Her Highness’s room along with Captain Ford by Sister Maki.
In front of the room, Sister Maki knocked and waited for a response from inside.
“Your Highness. I’ve brought the three of them.”
“Please come in.”
The one who opened the door was Her Highness’s attendant, Lady Margaret.
