XVI – The Assault on Dorsen
The thousand knights of the Iris reinforcements summoned by Count Godwin were closing in on the capital, Berse.
The Iris general leading the troops had sent out a reconnaissance unit ahead. The intel they returned with was alarming: the Faloon army had already breached Berse’s gates.
“They fell too quickly! What were the Dorsen forces doing?”
The general cursed the incompetence of the Dorsen army from the depths of his heart.
Normally, in a siege, the defenders have a significant advantage. A fortified city like Berse should have been able to hold out for months. The only explanation for allowing the Faloon army to breach so quickly was the negligence of the Dorsen forces.
“There’s no choice. We’ll charge into Berse and join up with Count Godwin!”
The general gave his command to his subordinates.
Despite the strength of the Faloon army, their numbers were only around two hundred. If they could coordinate well with the soldiers inside the city, they could use their superior numbers to flank the enemy.
The general’s plan was sound.
—If only no one stood in their way—
Just as they were about to reach the capital, five men appeared, blocking the road.
“What is that?”
After a brief moment of hesitation, the general made his decision.
“If they’re allies, they’ll move aside! If they’re enemies, we’ll trample them! Keep going!”
Ensuring Count Godwin’s safety was the top priority, and they couldn’t afford to waste time on five unknown men.
There was no need to stop their horses. They would simply crush them underfoot.
The thousand knights charged forward without slowing down. As they were about to collide with the men, one of them stepped forward and readied his sword.
He twisted his body to gather strength in his waist and pulled his sword back.
“Does he think he can stop cavalry with a sword on foot?”
A foot soldier couldn’t reach a cavalryman with a sword; it was pure folly.
Yet, the man’s sword began to glow with magical energy.
“He’s a sword master! Everyone, evade!”
The general’s order coincided with the man swinging his sword.
A torrent of wind burst forth from the sword, slamming into the Iris troops.
The leading knights were blown away with their horses. The horses behind them panicked, throwing their riders.
The Iris army fell into chaos and came to a complete halt.
“There’s no way forward from here.”
The man who swung the sword declared.
“If you insist, we’ll take you on.”
He had short, cropped blonde hair and a rugged face.
“You, you’re a Hundred, aren’t you? State your name.”
The Iris general, who had quickly regained his composure, demanded. He figured that such an extraordinary display of swordsmanship must belong to a high-ranking Hundred.
“I’m Ogma, the top-ranked Hundred.”
Ogma pointed to the four men behind him.
“These guys are also Hundred: Aaron, Barry, Bill, and Bruno.”
“The Original Five, huh?”
The Iris general had thoroughly researched their enemy, the Hundred.
Among the Hundred, Ogma, Aaron, Barry, Bill, and Bruno were listed as the [Original Five], the founding members.
Even apart from Ogma, who was always ranked first, the other four were also powerful enough to consistently rank in the top tier.
“Don’t think of them as humans; they’re monsters! Use your numbers! Surround and overwhelm them!”
Following the general’s command, the Iris knights quickly formed a perimeter. They were experienced in monster hunts and swiftly understood the general’s intent.
“Good command. This should be interesting.”
Ogma grinned widely.
“Do you really think five men can take on a thousand? In your last battle with Dorsen, you supposedly took down fifty knights by yourself, but even if each of you takes down fifty, it won’t be enough this time!”

The Iris general raised his voice, trying to shake the enemy’s morale.
“How long ago was that? We train to the brink of death every day. Don’t compare the old me to the me now.”
Ogma patted his shoulder with his greatsword held in one hand, then readied himself.
“You’ll see when we fight. Let’s go!”
Ogma infused his greatsword with magic and swung it. This wasn’t the [Sonic Blade] that created a blade of wind, but his unique technique, Storm Burst, which disrupted the atmosphere and unleashed a storm that tore everything apart. Its power was so immense that it was banned in the arena.
The torrent of energy from Storm Burst sent dozens of Iris knights flying through the air. No, it wasn’t just flying. The knights who took the full brunt of it had their limbs torn off.
The Iris general shuddered at the sight of losing dozens of his men in a single blow.
(This is like facing a dragon!)
“Get behind him! Attack from the rear!”
He quickly gave orders, but the four men behind Ogma blocked the knights’ path, preventing them from circling around.
Though not as flashy as Ogma, each of them could take on five knights at once.
They were faster. They were stronger. The Iris knights fell like flies.
The knights the general had brought were no ordinary soldiers. They were elite knights, well-trained.
(What are these guys? Are they even human?)
Watching his men being cut down so swiftly, the Iris general trembled.
“Magic Knights, forward!”
He called in the one hundred Magic Knights he had held in reserve.
The Magic Knights were a special force created by the current king’s initiative, formed by training those with insufficient aptitude for pure magic as knights, and those who were lacking as knights but excelled in academics as mages.
Though they couldn’t use powerful magic, they could fight both in close combat with swords and at a distance with magic. The drawback was their limited numbers, but they were still feared by other nations.
Bringing a hundred of them was a measure against Faloon.
“Attack from a distance with magic! Everyone else, shield the Magic Knights!”
The Magic Knights, preparing their spells while mounted, unleashed a barrage of fireballs, lightning bolts, and wind blades. Individually, the spells were weak, but when cast by a hundred knights, the effect was devastating.
They circled Ogma and his men on horseback, continuously firing magic.
Ogma and his men could do nothing but defend themselves, covering their faces with their arms.
“Magic Knights, keep firing until you’re exhausted! Everyone else, prepare to charge! We’ll strike when their magic is depleted!”
The Iris knights, having recovered from their earlier confusion, surrounded Ogma and his men, readying their spears and swords. There was no fear on their faces, only a determined resolve to finish Ogma and his men. They held their breath and waited.
The magical barrage gradually thinned, and the tension grew like a taut string. The knights gripped their weapons tightly.
Just as the Magic Knights were about to unleash their final spells, Ogma and his men charged all at once.
Their magic wasn’t exhausted yet, but Ogma and his men ignored it. The spells hit them squarely, but they pressed on, barely flinching as if they were being pelted by rain.
The Magic Knights hastily drew their swords, but it was too late.
“No running away.”
Aaron leaped into the fray from a long distance. He was small but renowned for his speed.
“Gah!”
The targeted Magic Knight was cut down before he could react. Aaron then used the fallen knight’s horse as a springboard to attack the next knight.
Jumping from horse to horse, he cut down knights one after another, moving like a mythical beast.
