4-4 Emma
I don’t remember anything before coming to the orphanage.
When I became aware, I was already there. According to the director, I was abandoned in front of the orphanage when I was a baby.
Well, it doesn’t matter. I’m not interested in parents anyway.
More importantly, I loved to move my body. I enjoyed climbing buildings and trees. Running around wasn’t bad either.
But I often got scolded.
“Emma, stay still,” they’d say.
I was scolded by the director and even by Isabel, who came to the orphanage after me.
The reason was that it’s dangerous if I get hurt, but I’ve never been hurt… much.
Sometimes I fell from high places, but I think that’s just part of the fun.
I just want to challenge myself using my body.
However, as my body grew bigger, I started to feel unsatisfied gradually.
I had already climbed to the roof of the orphanage and conquered the tallest tree.
I ran out of things to do.
That’s when Lady Selina appeared.
Before I knew it, I had been nominated as a candidate for an attendants, but I didn’t care about that.
Because the orphanage was already boring.
At the Duke’s mansion where I was taken, a dreamlike life awaited me.
Just seeing things like big ladders made of logs, bottomless swamps, and steep rocky cliffs made my heart race with excitement. Then there were tasks like running while carrying heavy luggage, being thrown into the forest to search for small hidden gems, running on bridges while avoiding magic, balancing trays on my head – every day was fun, like challenging the limits of my physical abilities.
Moreover, because I was happily clearing the training, Lady Selina even prepared special training just for me.
It involved running on a long cloth floating on water.
This was difficult. As soon as I put my foot on the cloth, it would sink.
I had to place the next foot before sinking. By doing this alternately and quickly, it became possible to run on the cloth. It took me a whole week to master this.
Lady Selina was pleased when I finally did it.
“Amazing, Emma. Even I thought it was just a joke.”
I must have imagined the slight tension in Lady Selina’s face.
Also, Lady Selina gave me a dog. An energetic puppy. Exercising with the dog was fun too.
Isabel and others seemed dissatisfied for some reason, but I had no complaints.
Oh, I was wrong. I didn’t like studying. That’s my weakness. Having to sit still and all.
Well, if it weren’t for studying, it would have been even better, but anyway, Lady Selina was the best master. She always said outrageous things to entertain me.
Among them, the sword training was particularly interesting.
The teacher was a knight serving the Duke’s family, and the goal was to be able to defeat this knight.
But this knight was strong. He was apparently one of the top knights in the country, and none of my attacks hit while he could easily land his attacks.
“You have talent,”
the knight would say, always teaching me various ways to use the sword. Learning swordsmanship like this was interesting, but at this rate, I didn’t know when I’d be able to win.
So I thought. If I can’t hit with one sword, wouldn’t it be better to hold two swords?
After all, I have two hands.
I practiced. Whenever I had time, I repeated swings holding swords in both hands.
Of course, it was heavy at first, and moving them simultaneously was difficult, but that’s what made it interesting.
After about a year of hard work, I could move them freely.
Then, I challenged the knight.
“Dual wielding? I’ve heard rumors, but isn’t that unorthodox?”
The knight didn’t look too pleased.
But that’s fine. Whether it’s unorthodox or not, I just want to win quickly.
As soon as the match began, I immediately attacked the knight. In terms of movement alone, I was faster.
Usually, the knight would dodge these attacks with precise and minimal movements.
That’s with one sword.
But now I’m holding two swords. I swung both swords rhythmically, like dancing.
The knight defended against the attacks with the most intense expression I’d ever seen, but finally showed an opening.
I twisted my sword into that gap and pointed the tip at his neck.
“…I yield.”
I did it! I finally managed to defeat the knight!
…But what should I do from tomorrow?

Some time after defeating the knight, I officially became Lady Selina’s attendants.
We went to see the king and such, but that doesn’t matter.
More importantly, a wonderful mission awaited us – going to a lake to defeat a snake monster called a Serpent.
As expected of Lady Selina, she always keeps me entertained without letting me get bored.
We trained together to defeat the Serpent, but my role was to climb on top of the Serpent’s head and thrust two swords into both its eyes. It seemed quite challenging and interesting.
I waited eagerly every day, my heart pounding with excitement for the Serpent to appear.
About a week after we arrived at the lake, the Serpent finally appeared. It’s a big snake. I’ve never seen such a large creature before.
Lady Selina and Isabel acted as decoys to lure it onto land, where Richard attacked from behind. Alice and Lady Selina further restrained it with magic, while Oscar attacked with his bow. Louis, our healer, stood by.
However, the Serpent’s movements were quite swift, and it rarely showed an opening.
I carefully observed its movement patterns.
Then, Lady Selina’s magic hit the Serpent’s face head-on.
In the moment the Serpent lost its vision due to the explosion, I ran. I jumped onto the Serpent’s body and hopped along its length towards the head.
The armor I wore was minimal and made of mithril, so it was light. It didn’t hinder my movements at all, which was great.
Landing on the Serpent’s head, I drew the two swords from my back and thrust them into both its eyes.
Immediately, the Serpent let out a high-pitched sound and began thrashing wildly.
It was uncontrollable. I quickly pulled out my swords and jumped off.
Even after that, the Serpent was formidable. Its body was still tough, and even a grazing attack could cause significant damage.
Well, Louis healed everything anyway.
The Serpent desperately tried to return to the lake, but having lost its sense of direction, it couldn’t manage. Instead, it was further lured onto land by Lady Selina’s provocations.
[Just because you’ve grown too big to be loved by your own kind, you turn to human women? And you can only get excited by those with holy power? What a perverted taste. Shall I introduce you to a noble’s brothel that caters to all requests? They might be able to provide you with earthworms at least?]
Lady Selina was impressive, even using ancient language to insult it.
The enraged Serpent was drawn to the land in the direction of Lady Selina’s voice.
However, our attacks weren’t very effective either.
But we’re used to endurance contests. After all, every year we undergo Lady Selina’s overnight endurance training that simultaneously drains our mental and physical strength.
Considering that, continuing this battle isn’t much.
I kept fighting, but my weapons gave out first. The mithril swords, boasting higher strength than steel, became unusable after repeatedly slashing against the hard scales. I had to replace my swords many times.
My companions also frequently changed their weapons and replaced damaged armor. If Lady Selina hadn’t prepared a large amount of equipment in advance, we might have lost.
Louis’s healing wasn’t enough, so we drank recovery potions like water from the barrels we brought.
Little by little, the Serpent’s movements slowed down. After about half a day of fighting, the Serpent finally exhausted its strength.
According to Alice, the Serpent’s last words were:
[Curse you, (emma)demon…]
Well, the Serpent isn’t wrong. Lady Selina is a demon.
There’s no other human as beautifully cruel and strong. That’s why she must be a demon.
Our precious demon lady whom we serve.
