Newly written Side Story: Nunnally’s Concerns
One day, Reiner and Reed visited Nunnally’s room. Reiner asked the maid stationed in the room to leave, and she bowed before exiting. Then, Reiner turned to Nunnally with a respectful yet gentle gaze.
“Nunnally, how are you feeling? Are you experiencing any additional discomfort?”
“No, I’m doing much better thanks to the medicine you’ve provided. This medicine is truly remarkable.”
Nunnally answered the two while taking the magic restoration potion from the bedside chest, gazing at it with deep appreciation.
Reiner’s wife, Nunnally Baldia, suffers from [Magic Depletion Syndrome] and is currently undergoing treatment. Magic Depletion Syndrome is a disease that gradually depletes the magic, or life force, within the body, leading to death. Moreover, no [treatment] or [specific cure] had been found, and it was known as an incurable illness.
When Nunnally fell ill, her husband Reiner desperately tried to save her but couldn’t find a way, even distancing himself from Nunnally at times, unable to face reality. However, during this time, their son Reed Baldia succeeded in creating a [Magic Restoration Potion] that could serve as a treatment. Although Nunnally had some close calls, she managed to survive thanks to the magic restoration potion developed by her son and her husband’s quick thinking.
Recently, by taking a fixed amount of the magic restoration potion daily, her condition has improved compared to before. Nunnally was once again deeply grateful to her husband and son. Just as she thought this, she suddenly snapped back to attention and hurriedly returned her gaze to the two.
“I-I’m sorry. I got lost in thought for a moment. So, what brings you both here today?”
Meeting her gaze, the two exchanged glances before putting on uncomfortable expressions. Then, Reiner cleared his throat awkwardly and began to speak gravely.
“…Nunnally, the truth is, Reed’s marriage has been decided. We came to report this to you today.”
Nunnally immediately understood the meaning of his words and nodded with a serious expression.
“I see. However, considering Reed’s age and the usual order of things, I would have thought there would be an [engagement] before [marriage]. Is it going straight to marriage?”
“Yes. Reed’s marriage partner is the First Princess of [Renalute], which borders our Baldia territory. It’s also the Emperor’s order, and as it involves politics between countries, we cannot refuse. The princess will be marrying into our Baldia territory. I’m sorry to worry you during your illness.”
Hearing this, Nunnally immediately grasped most of the situation. Politics between countries, the Emperor’s order, a princess from a neighboring country marrying into the Baldia territory. And the Renalute princess is marrying not to imperial royalty but a frontier count. In other words, she would be marrying the son of a noble who ranks just below the imperial family. From this, Nunnally deduced that for some reason, the princess was essentially being handed over to the empire as a hostage. Nunnally, maintaining her serious expression, turned her gaze to Reed.
“Reed, are you prepared to welcome the Renalute princess as your wife? Do you understand why the princess is marrying into our Baldia territory?”
Reed was shocked by the dignified and noble atmosphere, so different from his usual gentle mother. However, he quickly composed himself.
“Yes. Father told me the same thing. I understand and am prepared.”
“I see. Don’t forget those words. Consider the princess’s position and protect her. Just as you created the magic restoration potion for me. It’s a promise, alright?”
Nunnally gazed at Reed with gentle yet dignified eyes. While the details were unclear, Reed, who would be taking a princess married into the empire as a hostage as his wife, would likely face various difficulties in the future. It might be cruel to say this to such a young child. However, Nunnally believed that Reed, being their child, would be alright, and deliberately questioned her son as if to test him. And Reed answered her question firmly. This should be fine, Nunnally thought, relaxing her expression. At that moment, Reed put on a mischievous smile.
“Yes, of course. And… in the future, I hope to become a close-knit family that supports each other, just like Father and Mother.”
“My… fufu, you’ve said it now. But that’s a good mindset to have. Reiner, it seems we need to set a good example for Reed and his wife. We can’t show them too many pathetic scenes, can we?”
Nunnally responded with a beaming face to her son, who had said something quite embarrassing with his cute face. Then she turned her gaze questioningly towards Reiner. He sighed as if to say “good grief” and put on an exasperated expression.
“Nunnally, don’t tease too much… And Reed, you always say one word too many.”
“Eh!? But I’m just saying what I truly feel, so it’s fine, isn’t it?”
“Oh my, oh my, ufufu.”
Nunnally couldn’t help but smile at the banter between the two. Noticing her reaction, the two also seemed to find it amusing, and the three of them shared a laugh. Shortly after, having regained some composure, Nunnally addressed the two.
“Haa… fufu, I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve laughed this much.”
“Fufu, is that so? Then I’m glad.”
Reiner unusually broke into a smile at Nunnally’s joyful expression. It was a heartwarming scene, but Reed called out to Reiner with an exasperated look.
“Father, you’re forgetting to tell Mother something important.”
“Ah, that’s right.”
Reiner cleared his throat and then turned his gaze back to Nunnally with a respectful expression.
“Nunnally, prior to the marriage matter we just discussed, Reed and I will be visiting [Renalute] soon. We’ll be away from the mansion for a while, but I’ve instructed the butler Galun, Sandra, and the knights about security matters, so please don’t worry.”
“Oh… that is…”
Upon hearing Reiner’s words, Nunnally lowered her gaze with a thoughtful expression. Seeing this, the two looked worried. Soon, Nunnally raised her face and addressed Reed.
“Reed, how much of my magic restoration potion can you prepare?”
“Eh? Well, let’s see. We’ve already completed enough stock for while we’re in Renalute, so there’s no problem. We’ve prepared thoroughly, including extras, so please don’t worry.”
Reed answered, puffing out his chest. However, hearing this, Nunnally once again lowered her gaze with a thoughtful expression. Then she muttered in a low voice, “If that’s the case, it might be possible.” Concerned by her behavior, Reiner called out to her worriedly.
“What’s wrong, Nunnally? Is there something you’re anxious about?”
“Ah, no, it’s fine. It’s just that, if this visit is related to Reed’s marriage, it would be like a meeting between both families. As the mother, I can’t be absent from such an occasion. If I have the medicine, I should be able to manage. I will go to Renalute as well.”
Surprised by Nunnally’s unexpected words, Reiner and Reed were dumbfounded for a moment, then both of their faces turned bright red as they raised their voices.
“That’s out of the question!!”
“That’s absolutely impossible!!”
Startled by their voices, this time it was Nunnally who looked dumbfounded. Then, facing the two who now wore demonic expressions, she timidly replied.
“…!? Y-You surprised me. But my condition has improved a bit… You don’t have to reject it so strongly…”
“No way!!”
“Absolutely not!!”
Afterwards, Nunnally tried to argue for the necessity of her going to Renalute. However, both of them adamantly refused, saying, “Your life is more important than a family meeting!!” As a result, Nunnally ended up having to wait for their return at the Baldia mansion. Apparently, Nunnally was dejected for a while after being scolded by the two, regardless of her illness.

“Well then, Mother, we’re off to Renalute.”
“Take care, Reed. Dear, please look after Reed.”
Nunnally responds with a smile to Reed, who speaks with a bright, cheerful grin. Then, she turns a slightly anxious gaze towards Reiner.
“Indeed. Don’t worry about us. Nunnally, you just focus on getting better.”
He answers Nunnally while exuding an atmosphere of concern for her well-being, though he doesn’t show it on his face. Today is the day Reiner and Reed are departing for Renalute. Nunnally is still unable to leave her room due to her illness. That’s why the two came to see Nunnally before their departure.
As the three are chatting, there’s a light knock on the door, and a cute voice is heard.
“Big bwother, are you there? You pwomised to wead me a stowy before you leave.”
“Ah, that’s right. It’s already that time. Well then, Mother, Father, please excuse me.”
Reed says this to the two, bows his head slightly, and heads towards the door. It seems he moved to another room, apologizing to Meldy who was outside. Both parents smile happily at their children’s behavior.
“Reed has really changed…”
Nunnally murmurs after seeing Reed and Meldy off. Then, switching to a serious expression, she turns a worried gaze towards Reiner.
“Dear, I understand there are various circumstances surrounding the marriage with the Renalute princess. But please, protect that child for my sake as well. I beg you.”
“I understand. That child is your son, and my son. I will definitely protect him. So, please wait for our return without worry.”
The two gaze at each other, and a sweet atmosphere naturally begins to fill the room. As they are drawn to each other and their faces move closer… at that moment, the door suddenly opens.
“Daddy, Mommy, let’s wead the stowy together!!”
