Female Soldier Infiltration Volume 2 Chapter 6 part 1

Extra Side Story: A Certain Boy’s Ambition

“Good morning, Ruben. Have you finished studying for today?”

In a room within the palace where the regent of the Cyan Empire, which had a heavy gate in the capital, lived, there was a boy with deep blue hair peeking his face out from the window.

The boy who casually greeted Ruben, the first prince, was named Addis-Rag-Zarth. He was the son of one of the prime ministers of this country.

Ruben and Addis were both eight years old at the time.

Since their parents had a close relationship, the two often played together.

Although Ruben’s interactions were restricted compared to other nobles due to his status as a prince, Addis was a compatible friend in many ways.

They were what you’d call childhood friends. Even as they grew up and their distance changed slightly, they never thought of their relationship as more or less than it was.

“Addis, you came from there again. What if you’re caught? You’ll get in trouble.”

Addis frequently visited like he was coming to a friend’s house, so the people in the palace began to welcome him warmly.

Ruben, who was sighing at Addis greeting him through the balcony window instead of the door, opened the window a little.

“No one said anything to me. I have my pass. And I greeted anyone I made eye contact with, so it’s okay.”

Addis confidently entered the room and casually swung the pass hanging from his neck for emphasis.

“…That’s still not okay. This is the third floor, you know?”

“It’s easy for even me to get over. It’s not a big deal, right?”

Ruben looked out from the spacious balcony.

The castle, with its high ceiling, felt very tall even on the third floor. It might be natural for this room to be given to him since it would take time for intruders to reach it due to its height and location, but Ruben still felt that way.

The castle, built on a slightly elevated place, provided a good view of the town from Ruben’s room on the third floor.

“…I don’t think that’s the case…”

It was springtime.

Ruben, who had been glued to his desk to complete the tasks given by his tutor, squinted his eyes as a pleasant breeze blew.

He had heard that Addis’s father, Wellrain, would come to the castle today, so there was a high chance of him showing up. Ruben had opened the window just a little, keeping it a secret.

After closing the large glass window, Ruben turned around.

Addis, who was adept in wind magic, always floated here with the wind. He could go anywhere freely, and Ruben was honestly a little jealous.

“Even if someone catches your eye and doesn’t say anything, it means there are people here who will help you if something happens.”

As Addis answered, his gaze fell on the desk Ruben had been sitting at moments ago.

“Oh, your magic law assignment. Looks like you’re almost done.”

Noticing his progress, Addis brightened as he looked at Ruben.

“Think you can play once you finish this?”

“Yeah, I should be able to take a break after completing it.”

Ruben nodded, his silver eyes meeting Addis’ directly.

“Then let’s play a card game later once you’re done.”

“Got it.”

While commoner children around their age spent their days freely playing outside, Ruben’s days were filled with studying.

One of the few enjoyments in his daily routine was the time he could play with trusted friends.

Returning to his seat, he gripped his pen and focused on the assignment.

Meanwhile, perhaps bored, Addis reached for the stack of books on the edge of his desk and casually flipped through one at a nearby table.

After silently working on the problems for a while, Ruben’s hand suddenly stopped.

“Just this part left, but…”

Instructed by his tutor to fill in the answers even if unsure,

Ruben pondered the final descriptive question.

“……Which one?”

Catching Ruben’s murmur, Addis stood and approached him.

“This one.”

Ruben flipped the paper with the sole remaining blank back and forth to show Addis.

“Hmm, ah. I think it was written around here.”

Considering briefly, Addis grabbed the book he had been facing and opened to the relevant page

It is in the latter half of the thick reference volume

  • a section listing actual past court cases in small print.

“You read through all of it?”

“Just skimmed it quickly.”

Saying he couldn’t possibly read it that fast, Addis returned the assignment paper to Ruben.

Checking the content against the reference, Ruben put pen to paper

  • Addis had pinpointed the key to answering the question.

His ability to locate specific information from that thick tome in such a short time was impressive.

Ruben had always thought Addis was sharp, but it might be because of his good memory.

“Alright. It’s done. Thanks,” Ruben said.

“So, what game should we play?” Addis asked.

“I got a sample of a popular battle card game recently. It’s from Death’s Toy Shop, made for passing the time and learning magic compatibilities easily,” Ruben replied.

“Ah! I think I heard about that from my dad. I wanted to try it too!” Addis exclaimed.

Ruben was pleased with the expected positive reaction.

He retrieved two boxes of cards he had saved for Addis, who loved games, from a drawer.

The boys, with youthful excitement, spent a delightful time playing a new type of game they hadn’t tried before.

“Oh, I lost at the last minute!”

“Just bad luck,”

Hours passed as they immersed themselves in the game.

The snacks laid out by the maid on the table, realizing Addis was visiting, were nearly gone, and two empty glasses stood nearby.

Despite Addis’s disappointed outbursts at losing, he ultimately won three out of five games.

“Wow, is it this late already?”

Addis exclaimed, noticing the clock’s hands. The bright day outside the window had faded into dusk without them noticing.

Time seemed to have flown by as they played the game.

“Should we tidy up?” Ruben asked.

“Yeah. The rules were simple and fun. We should play with Claude next time,” Addis suggested.

“Claude seems busy lately. I’ll invite him if I get the chance, but I’m not sure if he’ll play,”

Ruben replied.

Thinking of Claude, who had been his apprentice butler only in the morning,

Ruben imagined he was working hard now.

To become the butler of the Emperor of this country required more rigorous training than serving as a servant to other nobles.

Knowing he wasn’t the only one making efforts, Ruben didn’t try to escape the rigorous education imposed on royalty.

“You’re definitely going to become one of my close aides in the future.”

Before he realized it, those words had slipped out.

The rule in games is to make the strong ones your allies.

He had reached an age where he properly understood all the lessons were to prepare him for becoming the emperor one day. Since he couldn’t run from it, he wanted to live in a way he could feel was the best within those circumstances.

For that, he needed reliable comrades.

How reassuring it would be to have the dependable, fuss-free Addis by his side.

“Ehhh, you mean become like your dad? Sounds too busy for me though.”

Despite Ruben stating something quite serious for a child, Addis gave such a nonchalant response, irritating him.

“…I’ll make sure you get proper breaks.”

His childhood friend was as flighty as ever.

For now, Addis was about the only one who could be so casual when addressing the prince.

“Well, I might consider it then.”

Addis grinned mischievously, and Ruben smiled back.

He knew Addis would somehow get roped into anything Ruben proposed and cooperate regardless.

“If Addis is with me, I could probably handle being emperor well. I’ll be the king, and Addis can be my strategist. Doesn’t that sound cool?”

“–Yeah. Not bad.”

Though they had no real proof, the two boys felt their idle conversation could truly become a reality someday.

However, it didn’t take long for that faint promise to take an unexpected turn

  • it happened suddenly.

“Your father has passed away…”

“–Eh…?”

Shaking his deep blue hair like his mother’s, Addis spoke uneasily.

“…Grandfather…died?”

“…It seems so…”

Slicing open the envelope and scanning the note with a heavy expression at the broad dining table,

his mother’s words held a meaning Addis grasped despite his youth – yet he failed to comprehend how it would impact him.

Addis-Ragg-Zazz, then nine years old.

Born between Cyan Empire’s prime minister and the princess of neighboring Arianne Kingdom, he still did not know who he truly was.

Donning black mourning attire, Addis attended the funeral

in a daze as it was his first experience losing someone close.

While many people inside and outside the castle gathered to mourn his grandfather’s passing,

the reality that he could never speak to the Arianne king again did not fully sink in.

He glanced up at Vanessa, who stood beside him quietly.

Her face showed no traces of tears. Vanessa, who couldn’t even be with her father in his last moments, had an expression that, while tinged with sadness, was also heavily laden with gravity and severity.

What will happen from now on? Seeing that expression, one couldn’t help but feel somewhat anxious about the future.

Suddenly, she noticed Addis’s gaze upon her, and she reached out to stroke his head.

“It’s okay. Grandfather will return to the stars properly.”

“…Yes.”
