Chapter 6: Just Like a Manga
Under the crimson sky.
“Is Shirayuri-senpai really okay?”
The boy walking beside her, her childhood friend,
seemed unable to shake the image of Koyuki collapsing from his mind and murmured his worries.
“She’ll be fine. According to the nurse, it’s just temporary due to stress. She said she’ll recover if she rests.”
Lily felt the same anxiety but hid it with a bright demeanor.
Fortunately, the nurse at Seira High School was an expert with a medical license.
If she said Koyuki would be okay, it must be true.
When she reassured him, Saito’s face lost some of its worry. “Yeah, you’re right.”
“…Stress, huh? Then we need to improve her relationship with the president.”
“The president? Is there something between the president and Koyuki-senpai?”
With his mind eased, Saito’s thoughts shifted
from worry to solving the problem,
and his remark surprised Lily.
Lily eyes wandered
“Oh, that’s right. You weren’t there, so you wouldn’t know. Lately, Shirayuri-senpai and the president haven’t been getting along, even though they’re childhood friends.”
“Really!? They’re childhood friends!?”
“Yeah. Kanzaki and Yakumo said so. And their parents are close, so they might even be engaged.”
“E-Engaged!?”
Lily, shocked by this unexpected information,
Lily was so shocked that she was surprised at how loud her shout.
(Engaged to a childhood friend!? That’s so amazing! I wish I could switch places with her!)
To Lily, it was the perfect scenario.
Recently, she had often wished she could be engaged to Saito.
She was jealous and wished she could trade places—
not with Koyuki herself, but with her relationship dynamic.
Saito being engaged to anyone else was unthinkable.
She would rather die than endure such a fate.
(That’s so cool! But wait… if Koyuki-senpai has been after Haruki all this time, the engagement must be a lie. Maybe childhood friends don’t become romantic interests. …No, no, what am I thinking? Mizuki-chan’s case proves it’s possible. I’ll definitely make Saito fall for me!)
“Hey, your expressions are all over the place, Lily. Are you alright?”
Koyuki and Takumi’s relationship was enough to send Lily on an emotional rollercoaster.
Saito looked at her with concern as she made various faces.
“Oh, sorry. I was just surprised. It’s nothing.”
“Okay, if you say so.”
Feeling her face heat up from embarrassment, Lily quickly stepped away and explained, making Saito back off.
“So, do you know why they’re not getting along?”
Resuming their walk, Saito brought the topic back up.
Lily, relying on her previous memories, tried to think but couldn’t come up with a good answer.
“Well, there’s not enough information to say for sure. Can you tell me more about what you know?”
Realizing her past knowledge wouldn’t help,
Lily decided to consider Saito’s new information.
“Alright. So, recently—”
Saito honestly shared everything he noticed, from recent odd feelings to today’s events, giving Lily a lot to think about.
After that, Lily’s answer was
“So, it’s probably because she doesn’t want the person she likes to misunderstand her.”
Lily concluded that Koyuki didn’t want Haruki to think she liked anyone else.
Having experienced similar feelings, Lily thought it made the most sense.
She also considered the possibility that Koyuki did something to make Takumi dislike her, but that seemed impossible.
Before time leaped, Koyuki had always listened to Lily’s troubles without complaint and helped her and Haruki when things got tough.
She couldn’t believe Koyuki would do anything to be disliked.
“You and Yakumo think alike. Maybe you’re right.”
“You don’t seem convinced.”
“Yeah, something doesn’t feel right. I don’t know why.”
Saito, still unfamiliar with romance, couldn’t understand Lily’s logic, remaining unconvinced.
He might be like this until he goes to sleep.
As his childhood friend, Lily wanted to help clear his confusion.
“Oh!”
“You thought of something!?”
“Yeah, a manga I read yesterday had a similar situation.”
Lily recalled a manga she read yesterday
that had a similar scenario.
READ THE ORIGINAL TRANSLATION AT GADGETIZEDPANDA.COM
In it, the childhood friend acted cold to the heroine, trying not to interfere with her relationships by distancing himself.
But Lily didn’t think this applied to Koyuki and Takumi.
The manga’s character wasn’t as harsh as Takumi seemed to be. The childhood friend in the manga was sweet enough to the level of being distant.
He is sweet because he does not want the heroine to dislike him.Takumi, however, didn’t seem to have that softness.
So, no.
She was about to explain when Saito interrupted.
“Really? Then I’ll come over to read it today!”
“…Huh?”
Saito’s misinterpretation led to him inviting himself over.
Lily thought about correcting him but couldn’t resist the idea of Saito coming to her house.
“Okay.”
Lily nodded.
A few minutes later.
“I’m home!”
“I’m coming in!”
Lily returned home with Saito.
A beautiful woman with platinum blonde hair peeked out from the living room door.
“Welcome, Saito-kun! It’s been a while!”
“Nice to see you, Lucy-san. You’re home early today.”
Lily’s mother, Lucy Machigane, greeted Saito with a smile.
A pure French woman who moved to Japan for language studies, she fell in love with Lily’s father’s novels Masaki Masanori
Lucy, who became an ardent fan of Masanori, made a fierce attack on him at autograph sessions and other events, and he married her.
She has a cheerful personality, loves children, and takes good care of them.
She loves Saito, who has been coming to her house since he was a child, as if he were her own child..
“Hehe, I rushed home when I heard Saito-kun was coming. I’m making your favorite hamburgers today!”
Lucy originally planned to make her favorite tomato pasta
but changed the menu as soon as she heard Saito was coming. Such was her doting nature.
“Really!? Thanks! I’m so glad I came. We were having bitter melon stir-fry at home today, so this is a lifesaver.”
Naturally, there was no way that this childhood friend would not be pleased to be able to eat his favorite food.
Saito’s face lit up at the thought of his favorite food.
His joy was so apparent that Lily suspected he came over to escape the bitter melon stir-fry instead of reading the manga.
“But, knowing Mrs. Yabana, she might serve it for breakfast tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry. We only had one bitter melon. I’m sure she’ll finish it with my dad tonight… probably, hopefully.”
Testing him, Lily watched Saito squirm, confirming her suspicion.
It definitely seems to be part of the reason for his decision to come to Lily’s house.
Lily wish she could take back the impression she had on him that he could go to such lengths for the sake of others.
She sighed, feeling slightly let down.
“HAHAHA, Saito-kun always brings so much energy. Come on, wash your hands and relax.”
Lucy laughed heartily at their exchange, pushing Saito into the house.
“Wait here while I change.”
“Alright.”
washing her hands, Lily leaves Saito in the living room and retires to her room.
Lily quickly changed into a hoodie and shorts, grabbed the manga, and returned to the living room,
She sits down beside Saito who is relaxing on the living room sofa.
“Is that the manga?”
As expected, Saito’s eyes were glued to the book.
“Yeah, this is it. It’s called ‘Living with My Childhood Prince: Surprisingly Ordinary Life.’ A friend of my dad wrote it.”
“Really? Your dad knows a manga artist? That’s awesome!”
