Chore Granting Sorcerer Volume 3 Chapter 6

Chapter 6: The Pursuers②

“I’m sorry, Laura. I can’t do it tomorrow.”

From the eavesdropping stone, I clearly heard Vim’s voice. After separating from Vim at the festival’s pre-night event and returning to my room, I continued to pay close attention to his actions.

Suddenly, he was going back on our earlier promise, saying he couldn’t do it tomorrow. This definitely meant there was an emergency.

I had to follow him.

Watching over Vim is my way.

I do it in a way that doesn’t burden me, and so I don’t feel like I’m imposing on him.

Everything I do, I do for myself. It would be pointless if I ended up exhausted and unable to function, and Vim would likely be uncomfortable knowing someone was putting in excessive effort on his behalf.

That would be heavy.

So, I limit myself to watching over him for just three hours a day.

But now, Vim had heard the Call of the Labyrinth. This was a real emergency.

I couldn’t help but feel anxious.

Really anxious. I had to lift my restrictions for a while.

I knew I was straying from my original purpose. But being aware of it wasn’t a bad thing. It would prevent me from collapsing like before.

I’m fine. My head is clear.

Sitting in a chair, I glared at the map of Villeborn pinned to the wall, never letting it out of my sight.

It was early the next morning when the signaling rune showed movement.

Vim’s house is in the suburbs, with few obstacles around it. Depending on his movement, there are areas without any blind spots. It was wise to avoid following him too closely around his house. I waited until he entered the town before joining him from behind.

Vim was walking with his head down. He seemed a bit depressed, but it wasn’t too different from his usual demeanor. My tailing was also as usual.

The only difference today was that it was the day of the Festival.

With people heading towards the town center, anyone moving in the opposite direction stood out. If someone had a clear destination, they wouldn’t attract attention. But walking against the flow, making irregular movements, would catch the attention of the military police. As a novice, I was often stopped for questioning.

But now, I wouldn’t make such clumsy mistakes.

I set temporary destinations in line with Vim’s movements, making my actions look natural, like I was just out for a walk. This way, I blended in perfectly.

Unlike a certain conspicuously familiar shorty.

“Hey, you mutt.”

“Yikes!”

I was so focused on Vim that it was easy to sneak up from behind. I grabbed her by the scruff of her neck and lifted her.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I was just, uh?”

“It’s me, Laura.”

“Huh? Oh, Su-chan?”

“No escort, huh?”

Her short limbs flailed, looking rather cute.

“Honestly, why does everyone who’s interested in Vim do the same thing… Okay, calm down. I’m just going to scold you.”

“Ugh…”

Even after putting her down, Laura didn’t try to run. She just stood there, looking down. She knew she’d done something wrong.

“Let’s hear it.”

“Well, today’s the festival, the real event. I thought we’d go out together again, but Vim had something else to do…”

“So you snuck out of the hospital.”

Laura pouted slightly but nodded.

“Were you waiting in front of Vim’s house since morning?”

“…Yes.”

“You know, even if you realize it was wrong, that’s really scary. Following someone around all the time is just too much.”

“But, I thought Vim-sama…”

As we talked, a sense of déjà vu hit me.

“Wait, Laura.”

“Huh?”

“I see where this is going.”

I was so focused on Laura and Vim that I neglected to watch my back.

I realized too late that someone was approaching from behind.

“Hey, you two shady characters! If you’ve got business with Vim, you’ll have to go through me!”

Turning around, I saw, as expected, Abel.

“It’s me, Abel.”

“Oh, Heide-Marie? And, is that Laura?”

“Yes. You’re quite perceptive. Now sit. It’s time for your scolding too.”

“What? But I’m on surveillance duty—”

“Just sit.”

“Oh, okay…?”

Abel, defeated by the flow, sat next to Laura.

It’s best to strike first. Time to press the advantage.

“Laura, you first. Look, I get that you care about Vim. But showing up at his house and following him around even when he says no is too much.”

“…Yes.”

“Think about how he feels. Don’t you think it’s stressful to have no peace?”

“…Yes.”

“And I bet the hospital is in an uproar. Make sure you apologize to everyone when you go back.”

“…Yes.”

Laura, feeling guilty, didn’t argue and seemed genuinely remorseful.

Good, children are easy to deal with if you reason with them.

“What a hypocrite…”

The problem was Abel, who was still sulking despite losing the initial confrontation.

“You too, Abel! Are you another pervert chasing after a man you fancy?”

“I’m officially on surveillance duty!”

“Oh? Explain your assignment.”

“…Three daily location checks and night-time surveillance.”

“Tell me what you’ve actually been doing.”

“No! I mean! It’s my duty! The commander also asked if I could escort Vim around the festival!”

“You came all the way into town? That’s some dedication.”

“Well… I was trying to talk to him, but I ended up just following him.”

“That sounds like an excuse. Regardless of how it happened, you know your actions look suspicious, right? Imagine if Vim saw you. Is that how you want him to see you?”

“Ugh…”

“As an adult, you need to take responsibility for your actions and how they appear. That’s only fair, right?”

Abel slumped, as deflated as Laura, and put his hands on his knees.

I’ve won this round.

Easy, easy. Now, time to send these two home.

“Um…”

However, while I was feeling triumphant, I noticed Laura looking like she had something to say.

“What is it? Speak up.”

“Well, um, I feel like Lord Vim is going to leave… somewhere…”

Her quiet words unexpectedly struck a chord with me.

It was likely because I felt the same.

“When he teaches me magic or talks with me, something feels off… Like I need to do something. But lately, it feels like he’s avoiding me.”

“Ah, no, that’s…”

“Does Lord Vim hate me?”

“Stop it! Don’t make that serious face!”

“…So he does hate me.”

Seeing my reaction, Laura’s ears drooped even more,

Her ears, which were always twitching, were down, and she seemed to be enduring far more than my lecture, and if I had left her alone, she would have started crying quietly without raising her voice after ten seconds.

“Ah, um, Laura…”

Please, have mercy.

I can’t see this as someone else’s problem.

“Well, I don’t know what Vim truly thinks, but it’s not about you. He just doesn’t like being cared for.”

“Really?”

“It’s not something to spread around, but Vim’s family has been servants for generations. Being served makes him uncomfortable. You might want to find another way to show affection.”

“Is that so?”

I didn’t tell you, Abel.

“Don’t tell anyone.”

Laura looked relieved, as if a burden had been lifted from her shoulders. Her ears perked up slightly.

“Alright, both of you head back. I won’t scold you today. Your motives weren’t entirely bad, but be careful in the future!”

“Yes!”

Good.

Now, time to follow Vim again…

“By the way, miss Sue, why are you here?”

Laura stopped and turned back.

Honestly, I had a feeling this would happen.

Vim entered a café on the outskirts of town. After he passed through the door, he looked around before heading inside.

I waited a bit, then followed him in.

“…Why are you following me?”

“Of course, I am. I almost got carried away.”

“Is this really okay?”

With these troublesome people in tow.

Abel and Laura also followed.

“Both of you, be quiet.”

“Understood.”

“…Okay?”

Laura didn’t seem to understand the situation, but I couldn’t send her back alone. We’re all in this together now.

Vim sat at a table for two, looking uneasy.

Something’s different. He seems troubled.

It must be related to the Twilight Owl.

“…Vim stopped projecting his voice strangely since returning from the labyrinth. His posture is more natural now,”

Abel whispered.

“Yeah, you’re observant.”

“His way of speaking is back to normal too.”

“You must be disappointed.”

“No, I actually prefer this Vim. It suits him better.”

I didn’t expect such words from him.

“…Abel, you really get it!”

He’s more understanding than I thought.

“Someone’s coming!”

Laura pointed, and Abel and I looked in the direction she indicated.

A hooded figure was indeed approaching Vim.

“It’s a woman, right?”

I confirmed with Abel.

“I think so… Isn’t she the same person from before? An elf.”

I squinted to see better.

No doubt about it. Those pointed ears are unmistakable.

It’s the elf who replaced Vim in the Dragon’s Wing.

No, that’s odd. The handover should be complete. There’s no reason for them to meet again.

“…Is it a date?”

Abel voiced the thought I had but didn’t say.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Abel. It’s Vim we’re talking about.”

“But, he’s her successor. It’s like senior and junior. Over time…”

“Stop it. That’s not possible.”

“They’re both struggling in new environments. Sharing work troubles…”

“Shut up, you blockhead!”

I whispered as loudly as I could.

Seriously, such pointless speculation.

It’s not true. It can’t be.

Yeah, it’s different. Vim wouldn’t be swayed just because they share the same circumstances.

“Does Lord Vim have a lover?”

Laura was also shocked on her own.

“Lady Heidemarie, Laura…”

“I don’t know! Of course, a teenage girl would be upset if the prince who saved her and helped her walk had a lover!”

“You understand completely.”

This isn’t getting anywhere with these two.

I activated the eavesdropping stone and brought the other piece to my ear. This way, I could hear vibrations from the stone hidden in Vim’s coat.

“…Hmm?”

But I heard nothing.

I brought the stone closer to my ear again.

Still nothing.

Did the stone on Vim fall off?

No, it worked until he entered the store. So, something must have happened when the elf arrived.

“Hey, Abel. Get ready to go in.”

“What? Have you gone mad with jealousy?”

“No. That elf is a tricky one. She set up a barrier.”

  1. Thank you for the chapter!
Although it is true that Sophia is in a tight spot, dragging Vim, who already left Dragon’s Wing, into Chrono’s mess is a selfish.
