Who Killed the Hero? Volume 2 Chapter 5 part 2

“I’ll take the right side. Efsei, you handle the left.”

As soon as we started running, familiar monsters appeared from the forest.

Mainly goblins, but with a few ogres mixed in.

I cut down a goblin that was naively trying to attack a cart. The monsters’ attention quickly turned to me, and they moved to surround me.

That’s when Sophia’s lightning magic was unleashed.

The monsters screamed and writhed as electricity pierced their bodies. I continued to cut them down one after another without pause. Efsei should be doing the same thing on the left side.

After fighting for a while, we had dealt with most of the attacking enemies, but of course, this wasn’t the end. The number of foes we’d faced so far could have been handled by the escort soldiers and adventurers who had been with us.

We heard the neigh of horses from behind. It seemed the main force was coming from that direction.

“Recover, please.”

Nina nodded silently and cast healing spells on me and Efsei. We hadn’t sustained many injuries, but fatigue had accumulated. Having healing magic made a world of difference for the upcoming battle.

As we moved to the rear of the carriage convoy, we saw a horde of monsters approaching.

(The battle has begun…)

The prophet, connected to the shadow, saw Leonard and his companions fighting against the monsters.

Having guided dozens of heroes before, the prophet knew Leonard didn’t possess extraordinary strength.

In terms of swordsmanship, he was no match for Leon, the Sword Saint. However, their party’s strength as a whole was quite impressive. Their coordination was excellent.

From their usual conversations, they didn’t seem particularly close, but in battle, they displayed beautiful teamwork. Even so, the prophet doubted Leonard’s party could defeat the Demon King.

(I no longer understand)

The prophet was tired. When guiding Leon, the first time, the prophet had connected their consciousness to the illusion as much as possible, seeking ways to help.

But there was little they could do.

The prophet had only been able to relay future events to gain the heroes’ trust.

Moreover, as situations changed, the future also shifted, making predictions imperfect. Each time, the prophet felt their powerlessness acutely, realizing they were merely a shadow.

Many of the guided heroes had come to resent the prophet.

“Because I believed your words…”

some had cursed before dying.

There was no excuse.

They had believed they were the heroes guided by the prophet, destined to defeat the Demon King.

Given the history, it was understandable for them to think so.

But the reality was different. After numerous trials and errors, the prophet learned that only those who actually defeated the Demon King could be called heroes. Even the prophet didn’t know who the true hero would be.

Rewinding time and restarting the world [World Compilation]. Around the tenth iteration, the prophet began spending less time connecting their consciousness to the illusion.

Just ten times. However, each [World Compilation] took up to ten years. Repeating it ten times meant over a century had passed.

The prophet’s mental fortitude was truly admirable.

But there was no one to praise them. Everyone forgot everything, leaving only the prophet to remember.

While their physical body didn’t deteriorate due to the resets, their mind wore down. It was natural that the time the prophet spent guiding heroes through illusions gradually decreased.

Leonard was swinging his sword, fighting against a demon. It seemed to be their party’s basic strategy for Leonard to engage demons in one-on-one combat.

“Let me guess your parents’ colors! Your dad’s red and your mom’s blue! That’s why you’re purple, right? Or maybe your dad’s blue and your mom’s red. Am I wrong?”

The demon, understanding human speech, flew into a rage.

“Don’t get so angry! Could it be your dad was yellow or something? Sorry for exposing your mom’s infidelity!”

… Leonard fought while hurling terrible provocations at the demon, seeming to enjoy himself.

He was far from heroic – a vulgar and coarse man. That’s precisely why the prophet had chosen to test him.

There had been many noble and powerful individuals. However, spending time with such people revealed their flaws. How would Leonard fare in comparison?

His personality seemed terrible. Yet, there was a glimpse of a unique strength.

He would use any means to win. He didn’t shy away from sacrifices and even used his allies.

It was a strength born from not seeing himself as inherently good.

His swordsmanship was dirty. When facing strong enemies, instead of aiming for vital points like the neck or torso, he would start by attacking relatively unguarded areas like fingers and feet. He would gradually weaken his opponents, slowly cornering them.

In fact, the demon Leonard was currently fighting had lost several fingers and his shins were covered in wounds. It was honestly hard to watch.

Leonard’s companions were holding back the other monsters.

The warrior Efsei’s spear work was impressive.

While spears are good for attacking enemies from a distance, they’re weak in close combat. However, Efsei could thrust his spear so quickly it seemed like he had multiple spears. Thanks to his exceptional skill, he was defeating monsters without letting them close in. This technique was effective against weaker opponents, and with Leonard handling the stronger demon, it worked well.

The mage Sophia was casting spells efficiently.

She seemed to consider carefully when and where to use which magic for the best effect. She used explosive spells for clustered enemies, fire spells to burn trees and grass where enemies had entered the forest, and wind magic to slice and hold back foes.

Moreover, she was extremely cautious. She only cast the minimum necessary spells, careful not to overuse her magical power. She was likely preparing for the possibility of a prolonged battle.

The priestess Nina was diligently casting healing magic.

She prayed to the gods, considering not only wounds but also fatigue levels. It was thanks to her support that Leonard and Efsei could move tirelessly.

Surprisingly, she could also fight using a rod, taking down goblin-level monsters with a single strike when they approached. Perhaps because of this, she fearlessly moved forward. While priests usually stay in the back, Nina always tried to be close to Leonard and the others.

Their fighting style was stable and flawless. Among the hero parties I’ve seen, they would rank among the top. However, being around 30 years old, they might not have much room for growth. That probably won’t be enough to reach the Demon King. I realized I was disappointed in myself for feeling let down by their desperate struggle.

Eventually, the demon let out a roar. It seemed unable to bear the unreasonable death approaching it.

Leonard, undaunted, pressed his attack. Even the enemy’s anger was an opportunity for him.

Leonard’s sword pierced the demon’s armor, stabbing through its chest and heart.

A demon’s life force is far stronger than a human’s. Even so, there aren’t many warriors who can attack so mercilessly. For just a moment, Leonard’s face transformed into a distorted mask of hatred. Among the heroes I’ve guided, he probably hates demons the most. I don’t know the origin of that hatred.

Leonard quickly returned to his usual carefree expression and headed towards his companions to help defeat the remaining monsters.

After they had finished off all the monsters, an unexpected figure appeared before Leonard and his party.

It was the Elderian merchant they had rescued from the Demon King’s territory.

“As planned,”

Leonard said to the merchant.

“You certainly made quite a scene,”

the merchant replied, looking disgusted at the monster corpses.

“This is the cargo you’ll be taking to Arkand. The carriages are included. Should be enough, right? Do you have enough drivers?”

“I’ve brought the number you requested.”

Men began to descend from the merchant’s carriage and took their seats at the driver’s platforms of Leonard’s carriages.

“Everything’s been arranged. The village chief of Gastan has approved the diversion of the cargo. The lord of Arkand knows the cargo is coming. All that’s left is for you to deliver it. It’s a 300 gold coin job. I’m counting on you.”

Leonard patted the merchant’s shoulder.

“Leonard, what exactly are you…”

Complex emotions flashed across the merchant’s face.

“Don’t ask unnecessary questions. I’m a man who’ll do anything for money. Let’s leave it at that. It’s the truth anyway. Money rules the world. That’s why you’re taking this cargo to Arkand, right?”

Leonard smiled sarcastically. The merchant’s round face also broke into a smile.

“Yes, I am a merchant after all. I’ll certainly work for what I’m paid. I’ll make sure the cargo reaches Arkand without fail.”

“I’m counting on you.”

The merchants reorganized the carriage convoy and set off towards Arkand.

[What was that all about?]

Leonard and his companions had received the carriage the merchants had arrived in and started moving towards a nearby town. However, they couldn’t reach it that night and were now camping out.

The prophet appeared before Leonard, who was taking his turn at watch duty. The exhausted Efsei and the others seemed to be sleeping soundly in the carriage.

“What do you mean?”

Leonard said quietly, his eyes fixed on the campfire. Perhaps he was being considerate, trying not to wake his companions.

[Why did that merchant show up? And why did he take the cargo to Arkand?]

“It’s not important. It has nothing to do with the fate of the world you’re concerned about.”

Leonard’s face, illuminated by the campfire, looked strangely peaceful.

[It is important. Tell me.]
