Revenge of the Soul Eater Volume 3 chapter 2 part 3

After the two guild messengers left the tent, Goz furrowed his brow in deep thought.

Much of the information shared by the two, who had introduced themselves as Parfait and Liddell, was fragmented. He couldn’t be certain that this adventurer called Sora was the same person as Sora they know.

However, it was a fact that there were several similarities between the two.

Goz gave a short, wry smile when he noticed himself unconsciously tapping the pommel of his sword.

“If this Sora isn’t young… no, if he isn’t Lord Sora, then that’s fine. But if he is Lord Sora…”

Goz’s concern about Sora’s identity wasn’t driven by mere nostalgia.

To put it bluntly, Goz speculated that Sora might have mastered the “Soul Equipment.”

The element of “Soul Equipment” was essential to equate the “Sora’s heroic deeds” narrated by Parfait and others with the “capabilities of Mitsurugi Sora” that Goz knew.

Of course, this was just speculation. There was also the possibility that Sora, after being exiled from the island, had found a good mentor in the past five years and had blossomed in a school different from the Illusory Single-Sword Style.

However, if asked whether a boy who couldn’t even touch a Dragon Fang Soldier at the age of thirteen could grow strong enough to defeat a Scylla or a Griffin single-handedly in just five years or so, the answer would lean towards no. It seemed more reasonable to think that Sora had somehow mastered the Soul Equipment.

And if Sora had reached the secret technique of the Illusory Single-Sword Style on his own…

“Lord Mitsurugi might agree to lift the disownment…!”

With Mitsurugi Raguna around, it would be difficult for Sora to reclaim his position as the heir. But depending on Sora’s abilities, it might not be impossible. Thinking about this naturally lifted Goz’s spirits.

However, there was one concern. The point that Sora, who had been exiled from the island, might no longer have any attachment to his homeland.

What if Sora refused to return to Onigashima?

Personally, Goz felt it was enough just to know that Sora was doing well outside the island. His sister Cecile would surely be happy too.

But as the strategist of the Mitsurugi family, he couldn’t allow someone who had mastered the secret technique of the Illusory Single-Sword Style to remain outside the island.

The Illusory Single-Sword Style was a martial art not to be taught outside the clan. Those who joined were not allowed to leave the island at will. Those who left the school had to swear never to use the Illusory Single-Sword Style again or speak about it for the rest of their lives.

This wasn’t just a superficial oath made in writing or verbally. Their fists would be crushed so they could never wield a weapon again, and their mouths would be sealed with sorcery. The same measures were taken for those who were exiled for committing crimes.

If someone left the island without permission for fear of these measures, assassins would be immediately dispatched to take their life.

That was the law of the Illusory Single-Sword Style.

The reason Sora, who was exiled from the island five years ago, escaped these measures was that he hadn’t yet officially joined the school.

If it was discovered that Sora had mastered the Soul Equipment, how would the Mitsurugi family judge?

The argument that it was Sora’s own power unrelated to the Illusory Single-Sword Style because he had reached the secret technique after leaving the school wouldn’t fly.

Three hundred years have passed since the first Sword Saint created the Illusory Single-Stroke Sword Style. The power of Soul Equipment has been monopolized by the Misurugi family. If the secret of Soul Equipment were to leak to the world, it would undermine the Misurugi family’s influence.

Therefore, all Soul Equipment users must be placed under the control of the Misurugi family.

As a Shiba – the strategist of the Misurugi family, Goz was in a position to force a decision on Sora. If he agreed to return home, all would be well. If he refused, Goz would have to drag him back to the island by force. Otherwise, he would have to crush Sora’s fists, rendering him unable to use the Illusory Single-Stroke Sword Style ever again.

“…Really. I wish I hadn’t heard Lord Sora’s name at all,”

Goz muttered in a small voice that didn’t suit his large frame.

If Goz had been the only one to hear the receptionists’ conversation, he might have pretended not to have heard it. But the siblings were there too. It was too late to pretend he hadn’t heard.

In that case, rather than postponing the matter, it would be better to settle it quickly. If one were to face monsters with a disturbed mind, unexpected mistakes could occur.

When Goz shared his thoughts with the other two, Klimt was the first to react.

The white-haired young man spoke in a biting tone,

“Aren’t we fighting to atone for the monk’s misdeeds? What does it mean for the Shiba who decided this to be the first to leave the battlefield? This is an extreme case of changing orders from morning to evening.”

“Well, it’s not like I’ll be away for a day or two. Using the technique, the round trip to Ishka won’t take more than an hour. Under the cover of night, I shouldn’t be noticed by anyone.”

“Don’t change the subject. I’m telling you to take responsibility for your own words and actions.”

Klimt glared at Goz with narrowed eyes.

It was disrespectful towards a superior, but from Klimt’s perspective, Goz seemed to be acting selfishly, driven by personal feelings. There was no need to show respect to such a person.

With this in mind, Klimt continued without addressing Goz as “Shiba.”

“Besides, what if monsters attack during the hour you’re gone? It’s not that we can’t handle outside monsters, but don’t push the responsibility you should bear onto me and my sister. If you want to meet Sora that badly, why don’t you go see him as much as you like after we’ve dealt with all the beasts?”

Klimt sneered, saying he wouldn’t complain if Goz did that.

Neither Klimt nor Kuraia were Goz’s personal retainers. Therefore, they had no obligation to accommodate Goz’s personal feelings or actions. Though his words were rough, Klimt’s opinion was extremely reasonable. Goz smiled wryly and opened his mouth to retract his statement.

However, someone else spoke up first. It was Klimt’s sister, Kuraia.

“In that case, I’ll take on the Shiba’s share of the work.”

“Huh? Sis, what are you saying…”

Klimt was perplexed by his sister’s unexpected words.

Goz also found it surprising and raised his right eyebrow as he looked at Kuraia.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Klimt called it a personal action, but I don’t think so. If the adventurer named Sora that those guild members talked about is really the Lord Sora we know, there’s a possibility he’s involved in Master Jininbo’s death.”

“…Hmm.”

Goz grunted at Kuraia’s words.

While Goz had considered that Sora might have mastered Soul Equipment, he hadn’t connected that to Jininbo’s death. He had unconsciously assumed that Sora, the former heir of the Misurugi family, wouldn’t have killed a Blue Forest Flag Bearer.

However, five years had passed since Sora’s exile. The possibility that Sora’s character had changed couldn’t be denied.

Moreover, it was more plausible for Goz and the others to accept that Jininbo, a Soul Equipment user, was defeated by Sora, another Soul Equipment user, rather than by Duke Dragonaut, who should be considered an amateur.

Kuraia continued,

“If we’re going to operate under the Adventurers’ Guild’s command from now on, we’ll need to go to Ishka at least once to talk with the Guild Master, Elgart. This is necessary to ensure that our relationship doesn’t become one where they simply issue orders to us. However, if all three of us move at the same time, it will leave a hole in our defense line. Therefore, I’d like to request that the Shiba go as our representative to settle matters.”

She implied that there would be no problem if Goz investigated Sora while he was there.

“Isn’t that right, Klimt?”

Klimt envisioned multiple anger marks on his sister’s temple as she smiled at him.

It seemed that Kuraia found her brother’s recent attitude towards their superior unacceptable. Knowing how scary his sister could be when angered, Klimt nodded while inwardly cowering.

“Well… if that’s the case, I have no objections.”

“Isn’t there something else you should say?”

“…I apologize, Shiba. My words were out of line.”

“I also apologize. Please forgive my brother’s rudeness.”

Kuraia bowed deeply, followed by Klimt, who was clearly sulking but followed his sister’s lead.

Goz could only smile wryly at the sight of the Beruhi siblings, which was as usual as it could be.
