Chore Granting Sorcerer Volume 3 Chapter 4 part 2

The profession induction ceremony took place in the hospital courtyard.

A simple setup had been arranged.

A large white cloth was spread out, about the size of a small theater stage, with a geometric magic circle drawn on it. According to magical feng shui, iron, adamant, emerald, and gold were placed as weights on the cloth’s corners, and finally, an altar was set up.

Adventurers, both current and former patients, gathered around the courtyard as spectators.

They all expressed similar sentiments like “Ah, how nostalgic.” It brought back memories for Vim too. Any adventurer would feel the same about this scene.

In the center of the ceremonial area, Heidemarie and Laura, seated in a wheelchair, faced each other.

“Um… Wise One?”

As the ceremony was about to begin, Laura asked nervously.

“Hmm? What is it?”

“The ‘cocoon,’ is it… painful?”

“Oh, it’s very painful! During my induction, I vomited blood for five days straight. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. It was awful.”

“Yikes.”

“But for an Enchanter, there’s no ‘cocoon’ phase, so you won’t have to go through that. It will be over quickly.”

“…What?”

“Just kidding, in your case, it won’t hurt at all.”

“Jeez!”

The two exchanged light banter.

They might get along well after all.

Heidemarie straightened up and raised her staff.

“Let’s begin the Hatching Ceremony.”

Whether she said it or chanted it,

it didn’t seem to matter. For a Sage, the distinction was irrelevant.

According to their teachings, magic doesn’t arise from chanting; chanting arises from one’s magic.

A breeze began to blow from the rooftop toward the courtyard.

The trees rustled. The cloth laid out for the ceremony stretched taut and flapped. The air pressure increased enough to press on eardrums, and the wind rebounded off the ground, making everyone’s bodies feel noticeably lighter.

Heidemarie began to float, her heart glowing with a soft light.

The atmosphere in the courtyard became so intense that Vim, Laura, and all the spectators were either overwhelmed or forced to sit down.

Despite her usual easygoing demeanor, it was hard to forget.

She was the 74th Sage, after all.

“Come, Laura.”

Guided by the resonant voice, Laura turned the wheels of her wheelchair and moved forward, looking up at the floating Heidemarie like a devout receiving the Eucharist.

Heidemarie looked down at Laura and spoke.

“Open your chest.”

A crack appeared in the space a little away from Laura’s chest, and a soft light leaked out.

“…Ellipsoid. Distortion is exactly 0-7. A-B-M-P, 7, 6, 5, 2. You have a strong aptitude for Enchantment. This will go well.”

Relieved by the favorable diagnosis, Laura let out a sigh.

All that was left was for the Sage to teach her the incantation.

“Alright, I’ll teach you the chant.

Call forth the storm, you are the people of the wind.

Silver shoes gifted by the witch.

The emerald palace in the west.

Blessed with love.

Gain knowledge, fill your heart, and summon courage.

Now understand this,

I am becoming an Enchanter.

Alright, give it a try.”

“Oh, um, I can’t remember it all at once…”

By the way, the spell must be memorized and recited word for word to be effective. Usually, during the profession induction ceremony, paper and pencil are provided to help with memorization.

However, children who struggle with memorization are rare.

“It’s okay. With your aptitude, you should already know it. Try reciting it.”

“Um, I’m not that smart…”

“Come on, what was the first line?”

“Uh, um…”

Laura tried to recall the spell and looked surprised.

“Call forth the storm— Oh, I remember.”

“Aptitude is like that. It’s the shape of your soul.”

Thus, the preparations for the profession induction were complete.

Maybe because everything went so smoothly, Laura looked at Vim once more.

When he gave her an awkward nod, she turned back with determination and began to chant.

“Call forth the storm, you are the people of the wind—”

Seeing Laura recite earnestly brought back memories.

That’s how I became an Enchanter, too.

I wondered if the 73rd Sage saw it like this, and I felt oddly grown-up.

“—Now understand this,

I am becoming an Enchanter.”

When she finished the chant, a faint light pulsed at the center of Laura’s body.

The light pulsed like a heartbeat, expanding and glowing brighter each time, gaining an organic shape. That shape began to interact with objects, displacing space, and sending heartbeats reverberating as waves. The light grew exponentially, reaching its peak brightness before quickly contracting and settling into Laura’s form.

Heidemarie descended to the ground. Seeing Laura’s bewildered expression, she smiled gently and said,

“Congratulations. You are now an Enchanter.”

Who was the first to clap?

The sound of clapping doubled with each beat.

Before long, applause filled the courtyard. Laura seemed confused at first, but then realized the applause was for her, and she blushed.

Vim waited for the applause to die down before rushing over to Laura and Heidemarie.

“Oh, Laura, good job.”

“Mr. Vim!”

Laura looked relieved but also seemed a bit anxious.

She seemed fidgety.

Vim quickly guessed the reason.

“…So, how about we give it a try?”

When he said that, Laura’s eyes lit up with excitement.

Continuous walking enhancement was still out of the question, but with Vim’s support, she could use a simple enhancement to stand for a few seconds.

“Hold my hand and say ‘Blain-Denin-Vein.’ I’ll say it with you.”

He offered his hand.

Laura eagerly took it.

The confirmation spell should be fine. She was trusting him with some of her weight.

Together, they chanted,

” ‘To your legs’ “

The light that had settled into Laura’s body seeped into the air and gathered around her legs.

Then she stood up from her wheelchair on her own legs.

It took a few seconds for her to fully grasp what had happened. Her legs then lost strength, and she sat back down in her wheelchair.

“Wow…!”

Leaning back in her wheelchair, Laura laughed.

I didn’t know she could laugh so brightly.

With the doctor’s permission, Laura could start light walking training today.

“Are you ready to begin?”

Watching Laura test her Enchantment in the courtyard, someone spoke to Vim.

It was Camilla.

“I wasn’t sure what to say, but it looks like you’ll be fine.”

Though he intended to watch over her, it seemed he was being watched over, too.

“How is life at the mansion? Is it suffocating?”

“…Yes, a little.”

Vim was honest.

Psychological counseling was burdensome, and the constant surveillance felt like a sticky shadow.

But, surprisingly, he felt relieved to admit it.

He felt like it was okay to say it.

“If you’re uncomfortable, we can arrange another place for you. We do that for married individuals. Everyone has their own comfort zone. We can make it work. We can make anything work.”

Camilla spoke plainly, without changing her tone, which was comforting.

“……Each person’s nature is different from the others. Some things can’t be changed just by thinking about them. This often leads to great conflict and even opposition. But that’s not all there is to it. Human beings are more than just that. For example—”

She glanced at Laura in the courtyard.

“—you saved a life, didn’t you?”

Laura, holding the booklet I had given her in one hand, was awkwardly reciting a chant and enjoying the sensation of her legs moving on their own.

“Hey, Vim. Remember when you returned from the labyrinth last time, and we talked about the Call? That voice heard by those who feel they have no place in this world?”

“…Yes.”

“How has it been lately? Do you still hear it?”

“…No.”

“Has the counseling helped?”

“Well…”

“Haha, it’s fine if it’s hard to say. Either way, it’s a good thing.”

There was a brief pause.

“It might sound cheesy, but I think Laura has become a part of your place in this world.”

“Do you really think so?”

“You could think of us the same way, you know? Normally, we would have died on the 98th floor. But you happened to be there and saved us. You’re a true lifesaver.”

“…I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.”

“Or is it because I’m not as cute as Laura? Should I put on some animal ears and say ‘woof’ or ‘meow’?”

I burst out laughing at her sudden comment.

“Camilla, you make jokes?”

“Hahaha! Sometimes I just feel like it.”

“…You surprised me.”

“What I want to say is that our gratitude is genuine. No matter what anyone says or thinks, it can’t be denied. It transcends the barriers between people. And I’m sure it holds value for you too.”

Laura, who had been watching us, came running over.

“Vim-sama, Vim-sama!”

Wait, running over?

Yes, Laura was running.

My enchantment technique was indeed a simple combination of basics, but I never thought she would be able to do it so quickly.

That girl might actually have some talent.

“Whoops!”

And just like that, she tripped over.

I was a bit worried, but the ground was soft, so she seemed fine. It also served as practice for getting up using the spell. For now, my role was just to watch over her.

“There are many precious things. If you just cut and divide things into two, you might lose something important.”

Camilla said softly, looking at us.

“The celebration is coming up, and we’ll be taking a break. The whole Night Swallow group will be pausing activities, so you don’t need to worry about work.”

“…I see. Thank you.”

“There’s no need to rush.”

She said that with an awkward smile, then turned around and headed back to the mansion.

  1. Thank you for the chapter!
Now then I think about it, won’t Twilight Owl try to kidnap Laura? Vim’s unique enchantment was used to decode magic making up the labyrinth and as he is teaching her directly, Laura, albeit imperfect, is easiest source. You can’t pry it from a guy who soloed a floor boss, Vim won’t teach them willingly anymore and doctors aren’t learning beyond what is needed for rehabilitation.
