Geek Mob Mercenary Chapter 76

Mob No. 76: “Then there’s no issue. The discoverer is Professor Theez. She promised not to mention my name at my request.”

It took around 72 hours, stopping at 12 excavation sites, to finally return to the ocean city after leaving Professor Theez’s site.

Unable to tell who were Dazblout’s men, I couldn’t seek aid – very troublesome.

No food but thanks to this being a fishing boat, rainwater collected in the buckets let me get by water-wise.

When landing, fishing docks exist in the ocean city so I tied up claiming an epic struggle with a big catch during overnight fishing. Then quickly left the area.

Ideally I’d have bought new clothes, returned to my hotel for the first bath in 4 days, had my first meal in 4 days. But I worried about Professor Theez’s circumstances and with Dazblout’s men about, thought better of it.

So I headed to the research zone allocated to my client, Professor Theez, and found people loading artifact containers into storage.

It seems the professor is directing them.

“Excuse me, I just returned.”

Calling out to the directing professor,

“Uzos! You’re alive! Thank goodness!”

She almost hugged me but,

“I’m quite dirty right now so please don’t touch.”

More than being dirty, I’d likely get killed by the surrounding students and researchers if she tried to hug me.

“I’m very sorry for the prolonged absence from work.”

I apologized for neglecting the job she hired me for. Even with good reason, abandoning work could elicit complaints and a breach of contract from some clients.

“You bear no responsibility this time. I’m the cause.”

Looks like no penalties, thankfully.

Then the police arrived, likely called by someone, and requested identification confirmation.

Turns out they’d been searching for me since yesterday, covering Professor Theez’s site and nearby ones.

They strongly hoped I’d share my story, so I first asked for a full account of what happened while I was gone.

They readily agreed so we talked in an empty storage room, the professor included.

After Professor Theez was taken from me, returning to the ocean city her students and researchers were indeed held hostage, all research stolen, and she was imprisoned in storage.

Some cooperating policemen prevented her escape too apparently.

Then a student named David Tries, absent at the time woman-chasing, heroically rescued the professor, subdued the thugs, arrested the internal cop conspirators, and gathered evidence of the doctor’s crimes.

This let them arrest Dazblout and get him expelled from the university.

Naturally Dazblout claims innocence. However, various other misdeeds surfaced.

Victims from the past jointly filed complaints too, expired statutes aside.

The deciding blow – his own son exposed all his wrongdoing, even appealing to victims to speak up.

Learning this, Dazblout was enraged of course, but got summarily overwhelmed by his son it seems.

Lacking a functioning court, the ocean city holds him until transport to the imperial capital for investigation and trial.

As for my ship, Professor Theez, the school, and Dazblout’s son will each pay a third for replacement apparently. Plus insurance money, very fortunate.

Though finding the same ship is the issue.

Next they asked what I’d been up to.

I explained needing to stay at the site because Dazblout and his men might kill me if I remained.

“Here’s the recording of the exchange then.”

Showing the video data of the site communication, the officer heartily shook my hand in gratitude.

Omitting Gerhilde, I reported discovering ancient ruins with a surface boat I used to return.

And promised the professor would be listed as the discoverer, absolutely keeping me anonymous.

Finished, the professor rushed off to the boat’s location.

Told I was free to go after answering all police questions, I bought new clothes at a 2nd level shop, enjoyed a much needed bath and first food in 4 days, then returned to my hotel to collapse into bed, immediately losing consciousness.

I woke the next morning and hurried to Professor Theez’s research area, where she and the researchers/students surrounded the boat I’d taken, equipment and observation totally engrossing them.

Disturbing researchers in that state felt ill-advised, but I had to speak up.

“Good morning…”

They all turned my way.

“We’ve been waiting Uzos! Come, let’s hurry to my site!”

They promptly started boarding the cargo ship.

“R-roger!”

Their momentum approached comic convention levels, no, surpassed them.

Arriving on site, the professor’s group was in raptures.

Turns out the break room was originally that shape, and documents were found, making them suspicious.

Wondering if something lay below, they progressingly dug the descending hole as an experiment it seems.

After showing the elevator and surface boat location I returned topside.

Tear down of my wrecked ship and shed had begun, with a temporary replacement shed construction.

With few cargo ship stopping spots because of that, I decided to scavenge intact looking remnants of my ship before leaving.

While scrounging, an elite, bespectacled female student overseeing topside approached.

“Excuse me a moment?”

“Yes?”

Seeing my response, she made an intense expression.

“Your failure to protect the professor will be forgiven for discovering these ruins.

But remember – you didn’t discover these ancient ruins. Professor Theez did. Don’t say anything unnecessary, got it?”

She threatened me with a fierce glare.

This student had admonished the professor, when she clung to me on the rainy return trip.

Good thing I rejected the professor back then. Otherwise this girl might’ve killed me.

“Then there’s no issue. The discoverer is Professor Theez. She promised not to mention my name at my request.”

“I see… that’s fine then…”

A bit surprised, my reply apparently satisfied her. Without another word, she returned to the construction site.

Well, people like her pop up occasionally, no use fretting over it.

More importantly, I should find a replacement ship fast.

By the way, nothing usable remained at all.
