Legend of the Far East Savior Volume 1 Chapter 1 part 1

Chapter 1: The Night Before Enrollment

I

(In the end, it’s just a story about a child who was forcibly implanted with a magic crystal by their parents’ reckless actions, accidentally succeeded in incorporating it, and was then thoroughly experimented on by the military.)

After finishing the mandatory guidance video that everyone must watch before the interview with the personnel officer following the enlistment exam, I silently voiced what anyone who had seen it would think.

Well, thanks to him, I can now fight too. I suppose I should be grateful for that.

Offering a silent prayer to the child who would come to be called “the Original,” I reflect on my current situation.

My name is Keita Kawakami. I’m currently 15 years old, about 170 cm tall, with black hair and eyes. I don’t think I have any particular distinguishing features. Just your average boy, really.

If there’s anything different about me, it might be that I have faint memories of a past life.

Thanks to these memories, I was treated as a genius for a while, but not so much anymore. However, as the saying goes, “A prodigy at 10, a talent at 15, and just ordinary after 20.” So being considered a fairly exceptional child even at 15 isn’t all bad.

Especially, understanding the meaning and value of effort correctly from before starting elementary school was incredibly significant.

It’s undoubtedly the reason I’m still alive today.

As for my parents, they’re gone.

They died last year, caught up in a war with the demon race during a business trip to Thailand or Vietnam, leaving behind my sister who’s three years younger than me.

After our parents died, we received a small compensation from the government and the company they worked for, but that was it.

Well, given the current state of the world, I suppose we should be grateful to have received any compensation at all.

However, I can’t forgive those self-proclaimed relatives who suddenly appeared, acting as our guardians, selling off the house and land we lived in, and even trying to get their hands on the compensation money.

I stayed quiet about the house and land because there was a possibility they had put money into it, but the compensation money is for her education. I won’t hand it over to anyone.

You see, in these times, while high school might still be manageable, quite a bit of money is needed to go to university. But conversely, if you have the money, it’s possible to attend university.

And in this country, students receiving higher education at universities are recognized as national assets. Therefore, if she can just make it to university, my sister can stay away from the battlefield.

A cynical view might be that this is a ploy by the wealthy to keep their children off the battlefield, but right now, I’m grateful for this ploy.

However, the compensation we received isn’t enough for tuition, so I decided to find a job instead of continuing my education.

Of course, with just a middle school education, no connections or backing, and no special qualifications, there’s no way I could get a decent job anywhere.

So, the place I chose for employment was the National Defense Force, which is always rumored to be short-handed.

I chose the military not just because of the education and connection issues, but also because it was discovered during regular health checks that I have an aptitude for compatibility with magic crystals—and apparently a fairly high compatibility at that. It’s probably due to the influence of my past life memories, but the details are unknown, and I have no intention of telling anyone about it.

As of 2055 AD, while there are a fair number of people with an aptitude for compatibility with magic crystals, the level of compatibility varies greatly. Among them, I, with my relatively high compatibility, am apparently a valuable asset to the military.

Being a valuable asset should mean decent treatment. Of course, there’s a possibility of being sent to the battlefield right after training, but at least I won’t die during training, and more importantly, even if I’m sent to the battlefield, I won’t be thrown out there with just a rifle.

If I become a pilot entrusted with a machine, my survival rate will increase dramatically. As long as I continue to live and fight, I can prevent intervention from those self-proclaimed relatives, and my sister will be safe.

That’s why I decided to volunteer for the National Defense Force.

By the way, the military’s greatest concerns are external enemies and internal operatives. Therefore, those who seem likely to become operatives can’t join the military, and they also keep a watchful eye to prevent any strange elements from attaching themselves to the families of those who have enlisted.

Moreover, if we can move into official residences, tough soldiers will constantly provide free security.

Some people might feel restricted, but in my personal opinion, I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks if you consider that dangerous elements won’t be able to get close.

Besides, in this country, the social status of military personnel is by no means low, which is good. Even my sister would probably face less discrimination as a soldier’s sister than as an orphan without parents when she goes to school.

Unlike in the past, people are now aware of the dangers right in front of them. No one would dare to speak ill of the military personnel who protect us from those dangers, or their families.

Well, apparently there are some who do, but they’re mostly operatives dispatched by other countries or demons, or people brainwashed by them.

In these times, anyone who raises their voice to “cut military spending” must be out of their mind.

Their arguments often include things like “If we can communicate with demons, we can understand each other” or “Even if it’s impossible with demons, magical beings are negotiable partners, so we should talk before taking up arms,” but let me be clear: it’s impossible.

Magical beings inherently dislike humans, and above all, humans and magical beings are in the midst of a competition for the survival of their species, so negotiations are impossible except for the purpose of sowing discord within each other’s ranks.

A promise to spare lives? What’s that, something delicious?

There’s only one exception, but that’s just a case of a demon who lost in a battle between demons and cozied up to humans, not at all for the purpose of building a friendly relationship. Therefore, those who think “negotiation with demons is possible” based on this one example are simply too foolish for words.

To begin with, humans are food for demons. So if humans were to negotiate, the only possible contract would be “unconditional surrender and a lifetime of slavery.”

…Whether to call this a negotiation is debatable, but if we insist on calling it that, then yes, negotiation itself is not impossible.

In fact, those called the coexistence faction seem to be acting with this in mind.

I can understand the feelings of those who are tired of war and wish “I’d rather be a slave if it means living away from the war.” But I think they’re underestimating what it means to be a slave to demons.

Sure, they might be able to live under the protection of demons. Because once you’re dead, it’s all over.

But if you ask whether the living conditions are good, the answer is NO.
