Romelia Senki Volume 2 Chapter 1 part 6

All the soldiers stood tall, looking pleased. It was only natural, as this was the moment when the hardships of battle were rewarded. Behind the welcoming soldiers, there were also severely wounded individuals who couldn’t stand on their own. They were being welcomed while being carried on carts and stretchers.

Moving severely wounded soldiers is not ideal, but I wanted them to see this scene at all costs. I wanted them to feel proud that their actions, their fight, were worth risking their lives for and that they had brought joy to the people.

In the town square, meals were prepared, and I granted the soldiers permission to rest. The soldiers happily helped themselves to the food. It was a feast they hadn’t had in a long time, and everyone enjoyed it with delight.

The injured soldiers were taken to the Polvic garrison for treatment.

Meanwhile, I, along with Al, Ray, and the members of the Rome squad, were guided by Captain Zaltz to the mansion where lord Dunham awaited.

Heading straight from the square towards the center of the town, we reached an area lined with noble residences. Continuing further, we arrived at the grand mansion of lord Dunham, at the heart of Polvic.

Passing through the open gates of the Dunham mansion, we walked through a magnificent garden and entered the mansion through open doors. Walking down a straight hallway, we emerged into a large hall.

The hall was filled with long tables and chairs. The tables were adorned with lavish dishes and cups of wine, and the chairs were occupied by gentlemen and ladies dressed in formal attire.

At the far end of the hall was a large long table, and behind it was an intricately carved chair where a short, dark-faced middle-aged man sat.

“Lady Romelia. Thank you for coming. I am Dunham, the lord of Polvic.”

The man who had been sitting in the intricately carved chair stood up and introduced himself.

“Thank you for inviting me, Lord Dunham.”

“Not at all, it is I who should be grateful. Thank you for saving the town and its people. Although it is modest, we have prepared a banquet. Please enjoy yourself to your heart’s content today.”

When lord Dunham clapped his hands, an orchestra began to play, and the banquet started.

The banquet was in full swing. In the center of the hall, tables were moved aside, and dancing had begun.

I was given a seat to the right of lord Dunham, and while sipping a citrus-flavored drink, I watched the people dance. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, perhaps from the joy of surviving the war. Among the dancers were Al and Ray.

“Well, Lady Romelia. Those two are quite good, aren’t they?”

lord Dunham, sitting to my left, spoke up.

Al’s dancing was bold and flamboyant. On the other hand, Ray was more technical, with sharp footwork. People with good physical coordination excel at everything they do.

“However, the clothes those two are wearing are not something you see even in the royal capital.”

lord Dunham didn’t miss noticing the outfits Al and Ray were wearing.

It wouldn’t do to dance in armor stained with blood, so I had the members of the Rome squad change into the clothes we brought. Al was wearing a black outfit with red decorative cloth, while Ray’s outfit had blue decorative cloth, making them both look quite gallant.

“Yes, we’ve had more opportunities to be invited to banquets, so we had them made.”

“I see. That shiny fabric looks like silk from Belia, and the design seems to be from the country of Parissua, known for its art, isn’t it?”

“Exactly, you’re right.”

I nodded in response. As expected of the lord of a trading town like Polvic, lord Dunham had a discerning eye.

“Indeed, as one would expect from Cashew, the gateway to the kingdom. With the port of Eileen, there must be nothing you cannot obtain.”

lord Dunham’s words were an exaggeration. However, compared to three years ago, Cashew had indeed developed significantly.

It was all thanks to Selure from the Yalmark Trading Company.

The trading company’s sharp strategist quickly built the port and arranged for ships. The port is now called Eileen Port and is filled with textiles from the East, tropical fruits, spices, and rare items from around the world.

Cashew has now achieved economic prosperity comparable to the royal capital.

“Thanks to you, Lady Romelia, the threat of the Demon King’s army has been removed from this land. Polvic, as a trading town, is also looking to establish a trade route with Cashew. Could you write a letter of introduction to the Yalmark Trading Company for us? Of course, we would also like to join the Romelia Alliance.”

In the midst of the banquet, lord Dunham brought up a business proposal and the possibility of joining the alliance.

“It’s a generous offer, but I would write the letter of introduction even without joining the alliance.”

I understood the desire to establish a trade route with the rapidly developing Cashew, but I had no intention of making it a condition for joining the alliance. Good business partners are always welcome.

“No, no. We cannot afford to fall behind the other lords by missing out on joining the most economically thriving Romelia Alliance.”

I couldn’t help but smile wryly at lord Dunham’s words.

The so-called Romelia Alliance was initially a military alliance for mutual aid against the Demon King’s army. However, it has now taken on an economic aspect as well.

Originally, it was a desperate measure I came up with.

As a basic principle of a military alliance, when faced with a threat, member territories are obliged to send soldiers and provide food, weapons, and funds in exchange for receiving assistance.

However, the territories I allied with were mostly small noble lands on the frontier. They were already struggling with the threat of the Demon King’s army and had no surplus to support the alliance. To strengthen the alliance, I needed to help them build their strength first.

Fortunately, I had Eileen Port.

The rapidly developing Cashew and Eileen Port lacked everything.

Building inns for trading merchants required timber, and sturdy roads and bridges needed stone. A large number of horses were necessary for supporting trade, and those horses needed a lot of fodder.

Moreover, considering the future, we needed to establish industries for exporting goods overseas through the port.

I ordered the allied territories to supply these materials and encouraged the development of export-oriented products.

“Several places have prospered by joining the Romelia Alliance. Moreover, we would like to establish new relations with the Graham Count family through this opportunity.”

When lord Dunham mentioned my family, the Graham Count family, I couldn’t help but grimace.

However, the so-called Romelia Alliance is not unrelated to my family, the Graham Count family. In fact, it is deeply connected.

To help the local lords build their strength, I sought to create industries. But starting industries required initial investment.

I had Teacher Quins and Mr. Welly persuade my father, Count Graham, to invest in the allied territories for industrial development.

My father, always quick to sense a profitable opportunity, promptly invested the funds.

With the invested funds, workshops were built, and the allied territories began to attract people, goods, and money, bringing sudden prosperity to the regions. As a result, more territories sought to join the alliance. However, it would be troublesome if they joined only seeking aid.

“I understand there might be some misunderstanding, but we are not joining the alliance just for the aid. Our primary concern is dealing with the Demon King’s army.”

lord Dunham explained his reasons for wanting to join the alliance.

“But, lord Dunham, there are hardly any remnants of the Demon King’s army left in the kingdom. I don’t think there’s a need to join the alliance anymore.”

I pointed out that the alliance’s purpose was becoming obsolete.

After three years of continuous battles, we had almost completely eradicated the Demon King’s army. Especially in today’s battle, we managed to take down three thousand demons. The number of the Demon King’s army remaining in the country is minimal.

“I intend to disband the allied army soon and return to Cashew with the soldiers.”

When I spoke about my future plans, lord Dunham smiled broadly.

“As expected of Lady Romelia, you see things clearly. You understand that maintaining the allied army after the Demon King’s army is defeated would lead to a conflict with the royal family.”

lord Dunham nodded emphatically.

I was a bit taken aback that he had read my intentions so accurately.

By defeating the Demon King’s army, we had gained the support of both the people and the nobility, amassing significant power. This was necessary to defeat the Demon King’s army, but from the royal family’s perspective, it made us a potential threat. If we continued to maintain unnecessary military strength after the Demon King’s army was no longer a threat, the royal family might view us as dangerous and a conflict could arise. Therefore, I planned to disband the army before it came to that.

“If Lady Romelia is looking that far ahead, then we must join the alliance.”

lord Dunham broached the subject of joining the alliance once more.

“Even though it’s about to disband?”

“But Lady Romelia, it’s the allied army that’s disbanding, not the alliance itself, correct?”

Once again, lord Dunham had accurately grasped my intentions.

Indeed, even if the allied army disbanded, I planned to keep the alliance itself intact.
