The interior of the destroyer is …….
“If that’s okay, then I won’t have to hold back either, right?”
“What are you thinking?”
“Since we can use parts from the luxury liner freely, why don’t we make the interior luxurious too?”
“After going this far with the bridge, what’s the big deal now?”
“You’re right. And Maria has already made major changes to the ship’s layout. The crew capacity doesn’t really matter anymore. The catalog said this ship could hold 162 people, but 120 should be fine, right? After all, we couldn’t even fit 162 people on it before.”
“Yeah, that’s true. We expanded the engine storage area a lot, so it wouldn’t work. But our ship has never been at full capacity anyway. So if we can reduce the unnecessary areas and create a more comfortable environment, that would be fine, right?”
“Then we should start with the captain’s quarters.”
“What, haven’t you done that already?”
“But the captain’s quarters haven’t really been touched yet.”
“Are you going to take the captain’s quarters from that other ship?”
“No, that won’t work. Then our rooms would just be the crew quarters. It would be worse than the prefab we’re in now.”
“Yeah, that doesn’t sound good.”
“Right? The one we’re living in now is basically a third-class cabin from that cruise ship.”
“Yeah, so what should we do?”
“We can’t go as far as a full-size first-class cabin, but we should at least improve it to that level.”
“Okay, got any good ideas?”
“Actually, I was thinking of bringing the royal suite from that cruise ship to the captain’s quarters. If the captain’s quarters are a royal suite, our rooms being first-class won’t stand out as much.”
“I wonder what the Acting Captain would say about that. Hey, what about that chart room, or the operations room or whatever they call it, next to the bridge?”
“Oh, the room between the bridge and the captain’s quarters? Honestly, I don’t know what that room is supposed to be used for.”
“Yeah, but if it’s that one, we could really go all out on the luxury, couldn’t we? Let’s make that an extravagant royal suite, and then use the current captain’s quarters for a suite. That way, the Acting Captain probably won’t be too shocked.”
“Y-you’re right. Let’s do that. I’ll go talk to the foreman right away. If he approves, I’ll get the proposal going, so can you help me out then?”
“Okay, got it.”
From their conversation, it’s clear that this decrepit destroyer is becoming more and more outrageous.
And since they’re reusing parts from the ship being demolished, there’s hardly any cost involved, so the proposals keep coming to my desk from Big sister Maki-nee-chan’s side without much oversight. Naturally, I can’t really check them all, so the proposals keep getting approved.
In the end, they weren’t able to turn the operations room into a royal suite, but they did make an adjacent prep room into a room as luxurious as a royal suite. The captain’s quarters became a suite, and the rooms for officers and above were made into first-class cabins, with the lower ranks getting second-class cabins – all using parts scavenged from the cruise ship. But I only found out about all this after it was already done.
Incidentally, the officer’s mess hall was furnished using parts from the VIP lounge of that cruise ship.
The proposals only mentioned that they would be using salvaged parts from the decommissioned ship for the furnishings, so neither I nor Big sister Maki-san really looked beyond the budget numbers when approving it.
Unaware of all these modifications, the space destroyer Shunmin has now reached its second month in the dock.
Come to think of it, I haven’t actually set foot on the ship since the new recruits arrived.
Just around the time I was starting to get worried, the dock company president showed up with Maria.
“Acting Captain, the maintenance is finally done.”
“Don’t be in a hurry. It’s not over yet. The hands-on work may be done, but there are still checks to be made, right? Isn’t that right, Boss?”
I haven’t been seeing much of the president lately, but in the beginning, he would call me “Captain” or “Boss,” but lately, it’s just been “Boss.”
Well, the others call him “Foreman,” so it’s a mutual thing.
“President, you’re saying the maintenance is on schedule, even ahead of time. So, what do you need me to do…”
“Well, let’s start by getting a tug ready. The maintenance may be done, but we don’t want to just launch it from here straight into space. I’d like to test it out in space first.”
“I see. Before that, could you let me do an internal inspection?”
“Oh, sure, that’s a good idea. Anytime is fine.”
“Okay, I’ll bring our budget manager as well.”
“Good thinking. You guys spent money pretty freely, so it’s good to have Big sister Maki-san check it out too.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll go get her.”
I went to get Big sister Maki-nee-chan from the next room,
and we all headed to the dock together.
Although we’re not an inspection team anymore, I decided to bring Meyrica-nee-san, who had been through the ship many times, to join us in the inspection through the rear hatch.
Meyrica-nee-san was familiar with the layout, so I left the route to her. But the storage area right next to the rear hatch had been completely transformed.
There’s no trace left of our battle with those pirates.
It’s been cleaned up remarkably well.
What on earth is going on?
That’s when Big sister Maki is holding her head in her hands.
“Hey, Maria. What’s all this?”
“Acting Captain, what do you mean by ‘what’?”
“Don’t play dumb. The wall materials are clearly unusual. Where did you get them from?”
“Where? From the neighboring ship… Ah, it’s already almost gone. We took the walls that surrounded the hall of that luxury cruise ship. They’re white and bright, so it makes this place brighter too.”
“I don’t want to believe it, but is the whole ship like this?”
“Yes, since we couldn’t spend much money, we had to reuse scrap materials.”
“If you’re just bringing the same stuff, there must be storage areas, right?”
“But Acting Captain, the safety is different. Of course, storage areas have fire safety measures, but they can be easily destroyed by portable laser weapons. In contrast, the areas for passengers in that ship have been heavily reinforced against such threats. The anti-terrorism measures are thorough. So portable laser weapons can’t easily breach this place.”
“Ah, I see. I’ll go check it out carefully later.”

I stumbled at first.
Big sister Maki seemed the same.
I later heard that Big sister Maki had only entered the ship before the engine replacement, and had been too busy to come since then.
She had only checked the engine area, which was the most expensive, and deemed it fine based on the budget execution status.
At this point, it’s too late to make excuses, but she seems to be trying to come up with something to report to headquarters.
Of course, the hallway leading to the bridge is also in the same remodeled state,
making it feel like being inside a luxury cruise ship.
The wider corridors are commendable, but… was this ship really capable of having so much extra space?
I’ve also heard the engine room has been expanded. Where did all this extra space come from?
“Hey, Maria. Can I ask, this ship used to be quite cramped, right? No matter how much the interior was redone, I can’t imagine there’d be this much extra space. Where did you get it from?”
“Hehe, the thing is, the crew size was reduced. The previous ship’s capacity was 162 according to the catalog, but we don’t have that many, right? So the current capacity is around 123 at most.”
“What do you mean, ‘at most’?”
“Well, the suite rooms’ capacity is a bit unclear.”
“What did you just say, ‘suite rooms’?”
“Anyway, just take a look around and you’ll understand.”
Meyrica urges me, so we continue the inspection following Maria.
The individual rooms, which are the living quarters for the crew, are predictably luxurious in their construction.
It seems they used the passenger cabins from the cruise ship,
likely second-class ones.
But the number of them is surprising.
“Heh, these are the private rooms for those junior spacers.”
“Whaaaat?”
I held my head in my hands.
Meyrica had been thoughtful enough to deliberately downgrade their room ranks, but this ship has ruined that.
“You knew about this, didn’t you, Meyrica?”
“Ah, well, Kasumi said the approvals went through, so it should be fine. I couldn’t really say anything against that. And the ‘boss’ here was really enthusiastic about it.”
“Come on, sis, don’t nitpick. It’s reusing scrap. No waste, comfortable, all good things, right?”

I headed to the bridge without saying anything further.
There, I felt a little relieved.
The bridge lacks the flashiness of the places I’ve seen so far.
It’s well-made, but clearly not for passengers.
It’s a piece from one of our country’s most luxurious cruise ships.
Moreover, the bridge must have been moved from the almost new condition since the cruise ship was attacked and scrapped on her maiden voyage.
That’s why the captain’s seat is impressively grand and pristine.
It’s like a downsized version of a fleet commander’s seat.
Well, that makes sense since the original luxury cruise ship was the size of a battleship, if not a super-dreadnought.
But who’s going to operate this ship?
At the bridge, Kasumi explains the changes to me.
Most of the operating systems have been upgraded from military to advanced civilian use.
Military systems are, for better or worse, conservative.
They’re designed with the premise of avoiding any problems at all costs.
But in the civilian world, the systems are built to the client’s exact requirements.
Given that the luxury cruise ship they used had a generous budget, the systems here are heavily customized.
They’re a bit unconventional, but the ‘boss’ boasts that they’ve managed to reuse components that meet the desired performance.
It’ll be challenging to get used to at first, but once we do, it could become an amazing ship.
“Acting Captain, I’ll now guide you to the prep room in the back.”
“ ‘ ’ What? “ ‘ ” ’ What? ‘ ’”
The atmosphere on the bridge tensed up.
Kasumi approaches Maria.
“Maria, are you really going to show them that room?”
“What are you talking about? If I don’t show that room first before the captain’s quarters, they’ll get mad. We just got scolded about the soldiers’ rooms, and we can’t let them see our own rooms now. That’s why I’m preparing to take the scolding for that room.”
“I’ll pray for your courage.”
“That’s my pride and joy of a room. I’ll guide you there.”
The ‘boss’ here takes us to the problematic room.
We freeze in front of the door.
The door is completely out of place.
This is definitely it.
They must have relocated the suite room.
We’re led inside by the boss.
Ah, just as I thought.
This is fit for royalty, I don’t know how, but it is.
“Isn’t it amazing? This room is a downsized version of the Royal Suite, which had only two units on that luxury cruise ship. With this, we could even host nobles and royalty.”

bruh the higher ups plan of making them fail maintenance and the cadets training is failing because at this point the cadets prob expected crappy stuff but basically get both training and luxury in one and wouldn’t be surprised if they become loyal subordinates or so tbh
Hehe, nice. It has become a luxurious military starship now 😀 it’s good for the crew’s morale.
although it’s not good for Nao’s morale lol
