Mob No. 74: “I’m abandoning this place to visit my foolish sister. Do as you like with the investigation.”
I really wanted to ask why she’s here, why Rozweiss didn’t have a human form but she does, why she’s active now, to show me other exits, and more. But resting took priority and asking seemed sure to cause problems, so I held back.
But I had to ask this much at least.
“Um, may I rest in this elevator? I came back to rest so…”
“Do as you like when it returns. Don’t come down.”
After calmly granting permission, Ms. Gerhilde went below, likely retrieving the shovel and gun while I waited for the unmanned elevator’s return.
Finally able to remove my pilot suit.
I always wear it when operating ships.
Thanks to this habit, even in heavy rain only my face got wet, avoiding colds.
But digging works up a sweat of course, so I could still get sick from my own perspiration despite staying dry.
So before removing the suit, I activate the drying feature.
It perfectly evaporates internal and external moisture and deodorizes.
By the way, under the suit I wear absorbent jerseys for comfort and mobility.
Come to think of it, didn’t they say paperwork and data devices were found underground? Maybe here?
Shelves of documents in an elevator sized room… I vaguely recall some manga or movie with an office that became an elevator.
Anyway, I place the suit on the table, use the restroom, line up chairs as a bed and lie down, dozing off immediately from fatigue it seems.
I didn’t wake well the next morning.
Lined up chairs make a bad bed after all.
The floor might’ve been better.
First I drink my fill from the water server, check the digger battery, use the restroom, don safety’s sake put on the pilot suit, load necessary tools on the anti-gravity hover cart, and head to the entrance.
I didn’t blast the entrance with my returned gun since it likely wouldn’t open a hole, and more importantly, the blast vibration could worsen cracks and cause a cave-in.
Then it was yesterday’s routine – dig for two hours, 10 minute break, clear debris for 20 minutes, repeat four times, finally opening the entrance after 6pm.
Rain and wind still rage outside.
Even from afar I can see my ship is completely destroyed, the shed as well, leaving me no communication methods.
Naturally all my precious books and anime data cards besides what’s on my wristcom were reduced to ashes.
I absolutely won’t forgive destroying my precious, precious light novels, manga, and anime data!
But like this I can’t return to the ocean city.
No choice but to ask Ms. Gerhilde… No, impossible with her warning not to come down.
But what will she do about the cracks? They’ll certainly be discovered once excavation resumes.
“Hey.”
“Gah!”

Lost in thought, Ms. Gerhilde suddenly spoke up behind me in the rain.
“You got out yet won’t leave?
“Don’t startle me! But perfect timing actually. Do you have a boat or plane I could use? As you can see, mine’s scrapped.”
Eyeing my former ship, Ms. Gerhilde thinks briefly before graciously offering:
“Let’s see… I think there was a surface boat for fishing in a storage bay corner.”
“Really?? Could I use that?”
A boat would let me return to the ocean city.
Far better than waiting around for that doctor to kill me.
“I don’t mind. More importantly, you know my foolish sister right? Where is she?”
“She’s a mercenary like me based in the Pout region, planet Ytts, with her partner.”
“Give me your star chart, mine’s outdated.”
“Sure.”
I copy my wristcom’s chart for her while somehow the rain has stopped.
But looking up, rain seems to fall above silver ground with black lines and a black bow and arrow emblem, the silhouette resembling Rozweiss but larger.
It’s a streamlined combat vessel, stock still without the slightest shake even in the raging storm.
Clearly Ms. Gerhilde’s true form.
Her humanoid form then says,
“I’m abandoning this place to visit my foolish sister. Do as you like with the investigation.”
With a great leap she boards herself and immediately departs.
Well, with possible trouble if discovered, it’s good judgment probably.
More importantly, I should find and inspect the surface boat below right away.
Repairs could be needed.
An elevator down reveals a narrow hall with left wall, right corridor, and leather bench before an elevator.
Turning right, the storage bay is huge, easily fitting the ocean city stadium.
But devoid of boats or work machines and tools, just an open entrance the rain blows into that Ms. Gerhilde apparently exited from.
I don’t doubt her words, so a surface boat must be somewhere.
Noticing a square hole in the wall with stairs, I climb them to a control tower overlooking the bay interior.
At the console, the entrance Ms. Gerhilde used starts automatically closing, some lights active.
Other interesting things abounded but best not touch them.
Fortunately there’s a layout of the bay and I can identify the boat location despite lacking language skills.
Going there, the area connects to the sea with three surface boats, one engine-powered.
The simple operating system looks usable even if I can’t read the words, no damage, fuelled up, should manage an escape.
But attempting it exhausted would be dangerous, daylight’s preferable even in this rain.
For emergencies I load a rowboat onto the powered boat as well.
Returning to the elevator hall, I use the restroom, then sprawl out on the leather bench, far superior to three hard chairs together.
All that digging was a complete waste huh…
No way Ms. Gerhilde would’ve clued me in with that attitude.
Well, just have to think of it as dieting I guess.
