Revenge of the Soul Eater Volume 3 chapter 1 part 1

Chapter 1: Return to Melte Village

1

I left Ishka and arrived at Melte Village much earlier than planned, without any particular troubles.

The time saved was thanks to Clau-Solas’s efforts. Probably because he was looking forward to Priestess Sarah’s cooking. He seemed to have really enjoyed the food she made for him last time.

By the way, I had already informed the main organizations like the Adventurers’ Guild and Ishka’s government about my departure from Ishka during the height of the magical beast rampage.

Some of the higher-ups in Ishka were reluctant to let me leave the city at this time, but I managed to convince them by explaining that I was going to bring back reinforcements – Lars, Iria, and Priestess Sarah – to help defend the city.

Upon arriving at Melte Village, I first took a bird’s-eye view of the village from above.

As far as I could see, the village looked the same as when I last visited. There were no signs of monster attacks or conflicts with other villages over the orc profits I had shared.

However, I was concerned about the small number of villagers out and about.

Feeling a vague sense of unease, I landed Clau-Solas in the back square we had used before. As soon as we landed, I saw the three little rascals – numbers one, two, and three – running towards us.

Their faces were not filled with joy at reuniting with their beloved dragon. On the contrary, they were crying with scrunched-up faces.

At first, seeing this, I jumped to the conclusion that something had happened to Priestess Sarah, and my whole body bristled.

The image that flashed through my mind was the miSarahble face of someone afflicted by Hydra’s death poison.

To cut to the chase, this intuition was half right.

The part that was correct was that there was someone in Melte Village afflicted by death poison. The part that was wrong was that the victim was Priestess Sarah.

The one afflicted by death poison was not Priestess Sarah. Nor was it her daughter Iria.

The one who had fallen was Lars, the leader of [Falcon’s Sword].

There exists a magical creature called the water horse.

Also known as the Kelpie, this monster takes the form of a horse, as its name suggests, and appears near bodies of water such as rivers and lakes.

Its mane is made of water plants, its tail is that of a fish, and its body and four legs are covered in countless fins.

It can run on the water’s surface as if on land, swim underwater like a fish, and once submerged, can remain active for hours without needing to breathe.

Moreover, the Kelpie possesses the ability to shapeshift, allowing it to disguise itself as an ordinary horse.

The reason for this ability is to deceive humans and lure them onto its back.

The Kelpie’s back secretes an extremely sticky bodily fluid, making it impossible for anyone who mounts it to dismount, as their clothes and flesh become stuck to its back.

When attacking humans, the Kelpie first disguises itself as an ordinary horse to catch its prey off guard. It then entices them to mount its back, and once they’re unable to escape, it dives deep into the water, drowning its rider.

Afterward, the Kelpie slowly chews on the drowned human. In other words, the Kelpie was classified as a man-eating magical beast.

Some say it doesn’t eat the liver, but even if that were true, it would be of little comfort to those who fall victim to it.

This Kelpie had attacked Melte Village, according to the explanation given by Priestess Sarah, whom I had reunited with.

However, it didn’t suddenly raid Melte without warning.

To explain in order, five days before I arrived at the village, news came from a village upstream of Melte that they had been “attacked by a Kelpie.”

According to the report, the Kelpie seemed to have been affected by the poison flowing in the Kale River and, instead of trying to deceive and drown humans, it bared its fangs and attacked outright.

Fortunately, the Kelpie was alone, and the villagers managed to cooperate and drive it back into the Kale River.

Afterward, considering the possibility that neighboring villages might be attacked, the villagers sent messengers to surrounding villages, including Melte.

Upon receiving this report, Melte Village kept watch along the riverbank, considering the possibility that the injured Kelpie might attack.

As evidenced by the upstream village’s ability to repel it without the help of adventurers, the Kelpie itself isn’t an exceptionally powerful monster. In fact, when the Kelpie attacked three days ago, sixth-rank adventurers Iria and Lars led the counterattack and managed to defeat the monster after a brief battle.

They didn’t come out unscathed, with Iria and Lars, who fought at the forefront, both sustaining injuries. However, these were minor wounds that could be quickly closed with healing magic.

If it had ended there, all would have been well, but from that day onward, Lars’ condition began to deteriorate rapidly.

Healing magic had no effect, so they tried giving him the antidote I had left behind earlier. While it temporarily improved his symptoms, they quickly returned.

Kelpies are said to possess cursing powers and can sometimes curse those who defeat them. Upon learning this, Priestess Sarah attempted curse-breaking magic, but to no avail.

It was at this time that I arrived at the village.

“I’ve tried everything I could…”

Priestess Sarah, whom I was meeting again after about a month, looked terribly pale, her face a mixture of deep fatigue and intense worry.

As someone who had long healed people as a priest, she might have sensed something about Lars’ condition. Perhaps she felt that this poison was beyond human capabilities to cure.

Priestess Sarah explained with a grave expression.

“The medicine and magic work at first. But the symptoms quickly return… And that’s not all. When the symptoms recur, the effectiveness of previously working medicines and magic diminishes, until they eventually become completely ineffective.”

She said it was as if the disease was growing and evolving within the patient’s body.

During my previous visit to this village, I had left not only the antidote made by the Slave Traders’ Guild but also the fruit of the Jiraiya Oak. According to Priestess Sarah, even the Jiraiya Oak fruit had no effect on Lars’ current condition.

This was undoubtedly the Hydra’s death poison. As I thought this and was about to explain about the death poison to the priest, I hesitated.

It takes considerable courage for an amateur to express opinions in front of an expert like Priestess Sarah. Especially since the crucial part about it being “incurable” was merely speculation.

So, I considered simply handing over the new medicine created through Miroslav’s dedication without saying anything about that.

However, this also posed a problem.

Although Miroslav had confirmed the safety of the new medicine by using herself as a test subject, there was still a non-zero possibility that it could adversely affect a patient like Lars, who had already been weakened. Dragon blood is like a potent drug. In the worst-case scenario, it could potentially cause fatal damage to Lars’ weakened body.

To avoid this, if I were to explain in detail, I would inevitably have to mention the incurability of the poison and reveal the secret of my blood, which could remove this incurable poison.

Both of these would likely sound like gibberish to Priestess Sarah. The thought of being met with a skeptical gaze from the woman before me made my tongue feel frozen and unable to move. Even though I knew that, considering Lars’ condition and Ishka’s situation, this was no time to be wasting time like this.

Just then, Priestess Sarah, who had been sitting across the table from me, suddenly leaned forward, bringing her face close to mine.

Startled by the sudden movement, I leaned back reflexively.

“Whoa!? W-What’s the matter?”

“Sora-san, did something happen?”

“W-Why do you think that…?”

In response to my question, Priestess Sarah returned to her original position and replied in a calm voice.

“You looked like you were in great pain. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard about the purpose of your visit this time. If you have something you’d like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to say so.”

After saying this, perhaps realizing her current state, the priest put her hand to her haggard cheek in embarrassment.

“Ah… I may not seem reliable in my current state. But I used to be a warrior priest like Iria. I’m more resilient than I look!”

Priestess Sarah flexing her muscles was, how should I put it, incredibly adorable. It’s not an appropriate thing to say about a woman more than a decade older than me, but there’s no other way to describe it.

I felt the urge to kneel down right there and confess to the priestess before me.

What needs to be done now is treating Lars. Why hesitate when I know that?

True, my speculation about the death poison lacks solid evidence, but I’m not intentionally speaking falsehoods with malicious intent. Surely Priestess Sarah would understand that much!

“Actually–“

Having made up my mind, I began to explain the circumstances leading up to today in detail to Priestess Sarah.

She listened intently throughout, maintaining a serious expression.

As a result, treatment with the new antidote began that very day — of course, we provided Lars with a minimum explanation — and the pain that had been tormenting Lars was completely eliminated.
