Epilogue
Luciana stood before the gates of the palace.
The guards found the old court magician standing alone to be quite strange, but they didn’t dare to approach her.
Eventually, a female magician with red eyes and a white hood appeared from nowhere and spoke to Luciana. Together, they disappeared into the palace.
The guards quickly forgot about the woman in the white hood.
“Is Rath’s condition that bad?”
Luna asked Luciana.
“It has been bad for a while. Considering his age, he’s lasted quite well,” L
Both Luciana and Rath were around seventy. They had lived long lives.
“This way,”
Luciana led Luna to the throne room.
“I’ll make sure no one disturbs you. It’s Rath’s final order…”
Luciana’s eyes were filled with a mix of sadness, affection, and jealousy as she looked at Luna.
Luciana then left, and Luna entered the room.
“You’re late.”
Rath was sitting on the throne.
His posture was dignified and full of authority. Though his face was a bit gaunt, his blue eyes still held a spark of life. He didn’t look like someone at death’s door.
He smiled like a child proud of becoming a king.
But Luna could tell that the magic coursing through his body was weak, so weak that he probably couldn’t even stand.
Rath was holding on with sheer willpower.
“Yes, I made you wait,”
“I forgive you. I am a generous man,”
Rath said arrogantly, just as he always had.
“Why didn’t you marry?”
Luna asked. She knew the answer, but she had to ask.
“I felt that if I married, I’d never see you again,”
He was right. If Rath had married, Luna wouldn’t have shown herself.
“I wasn’t worth that much. There was nothing about me that should have bound your life…”
Luna lowered her eyes. She used to think she was valuable, but what Rath showed her was beyond that.
“Don’t say that. I sought power for you. I changed the world for you. You were worth that much to me. No other man, not even Kahn, found such worth in you.”
“Why bring up my master?”
Luna laughed, thinking Rath was as insensitive as ever, insisting he was the best even by bringing up other men.
“You’re a cruel man. And to make me promise that,”
Rath had made Luna promise never to drink anyone else’s blood. She kept that promise, though she wasn’t sure if it was because of the promise or not.
“You kept the promise?”
Rath looked surprised. He knew the agony of her thirst and didn’t expect she could keep it. He smiled happily.
“Yes, it was a promise to my jealous king. I kept it,”
“Good girl. As a reward, you can drink my blood.”
“…Just to ask, do you want eternal life?”
Luna asked, though she knew the answer. If he said yes, it would make her happy and sad.
“It’s a tempting offer. But I am a king, a legendary warrior king. It wouldn’t be fitting for such a king to survive as a vampire.”
His answer was as expected. Luna felt relieved.
But at the same time, she felt an overwhelming sadness.
“That answer sounds like Logan’s. All men are the same, whether a great magician or a legendary king, always trying to look cool like children.”
“What are you saying? I reached the same heights as the legendary magician. That’s how great I am,”
Rath said stubbornly. It made Luna happy.
“Then I’ll just drink your blood. And this time, I’ll drink from wherever I like.”
Vampires usually drank from the neck. When Luna struggled with her thirst, she had the urge to bite necks. But she had only bitten Rath’s left arm before.
“That’s right. I’ve made you wait long enough. Do as you wish.”
Rath allowed Luna her desire. There was no need to worry about where the marks would be anymore.
Luna approached the throne and gently brought her face close to Rath’s neck.
The next morning, the great warrior king Ramnarth was found dead. It was said to be a natural death.
But strangely, his neck bore the marks of lips.
