The Suspects of Necromancy Volume 1 Chapter 18

At dawn, Luna saw a human figure far ahead on the road where she stood. It filled her with fear. She no longer thirsted for blood, but if a person came near, she might attack them on impulse.

Luna quickly left the road and started running west again.

While running, Luna was searching for something.

Vampires crave human blood because it contains concentrated magical power.

According to myths, humans, said to be created in the likeness of gods, have blood imbued with more magical power than any other animal. As a direct source of magical power, human blood is considered the best in both quality and quantity.

In fact, human blood is often sought in magical rituals, and its effects far surpass those of other animals.

In powerful magical rituals, a human sacrifice may even be required, though such rituals are taboo and often linked to necromancy.

However, there are other creatures with magical power besides humans. Luna believed there might be creatures with even more magical power than humans.

Those creatures were monsters.

As their name suggests, monsters are creatures imbued with magical power. The difference between animals and monsters lies in this single point. Even humans who can use magic are called “wizards” and distinguished from ordinary people. Being able to use magical power is that special.

Luna speculated that monster blood might substitute for human blood.

Monsters are generally enemies of humans, so she felt no guilt in attacking them.

Thus, Luna headed west, searching for monsters.

(They’re nowhere to be found.)

Luna deliberately chose routes through forests and mountains where monsters were likely to live, but she couldn’t find any trace of them.

(It’s strange. There should be monsters in places with ley lines.)

Ley lines are places where natural magical power gathers, often found near large mountains or rivers. Such places attract monsters due to the concentration of magical power.

The forest near the royal capital, where Luna had gathered herbs, was a small ley line and thus home to monsters.

Yet, even after passing through forests and rivers where ley lines should be, she couldn’t sense any monsters.

While puzzled, Luna finally spotted a monster.

It was a gigantic turtle monster,

likely the size of Khan’s mansion. The brown turtle, with a rock-hard shell, was moving with great effort, shaking the ground as it went, in the opposite direction from Luna.

Looking closely, Luna saw other monsters heading in the same direction, like a mass migration of monsters.

(Is this a coincidence?)

Luna felt a sense of foreboding.

Her current speed far surpassed that of ordinary monsters. She decided to get ahead of the migrating monsters and wait for them.

She leapt through the trees, quickly overtaking and circling around the monsters.

Suddenly, the monsters changed direction, moving away from Luna even more desperately than before.

(I see. The monsters sensed my magical power as an immortal king and fled. No wonder I couldn’t find any.)

The realization that even monsters fled from her made Luna feel despondent.

(Well, it doesn’t matter. I’ve found monsters, and that giant turtle can’t escape.)

Luna sprinted and easily approached the turtle monster. The turtle continued walking at full speed, not even glancing at Luna. She almost felt pity for it.

(I’m sorry, but I have no grudge against you…)

Luna leapt onto the turtle’s shell, causing it to thrash wildly.

It was natural for the turtle to go berserk with a dangerous creature on its back.

On the turtle’s shell, Luna began chanting a spell.

It was a wind spell she wasn’t very skilled at, one that sent out a vacuum blade to cut through objects.

Before becoming an immortal king, Luna could barely cut down a tree branch with this spell.

But now, Luna possessed extraordinary magical power.

The completed wind spell formed a large crescent blade, which she directed at the turtle’s neck.

The wind blade exceeded Luna’s expectations, decapitating the turtle, and dark red blood spurted like a fountain from the neck.

Feeling repulsed, Luna scooped the blood with her hand and tasted it.

(Fishy, disgusting, it makes me want to vomit.)

Instead of quenching her thirst for blood, she felt nauseous.

(Is it because it’s the blood of a turtle monster?)

Luna immediately pursued the other monsters.

She felt overwhelmed with the thought of what she was doing.

But there was no turning back now.

Honestly, Luna no longer had confidence in resisting her thirst for blood.

Her attempt to attack a town had traumatized her deeply.

She knew these monsters were innocent.

But attacking them was far better than attacking humans.

Luna attacked the monsters, tasted their blood, and confirmed they weren’t suitable for her. Then she attacked the next monster.

She killed indiscriminately, be it bird-like monsters, boar-like monsters, or lizard-like monsters.

Yet, no monster’s blood suited her.

Even when she forced herself to swallow it, she ended up vomiting it out.

The area was strewn with the corpses of monsters.

The word “vampire” flashed through Luna’s mind.

A demon that slaughtered for undrinkable blood.

It undoubtedly referred to her.

There was no sign of any living creature near her anymore.

She wished she could die, but she couldn’t think of a way to harm her body, which had withstood all the monsters’ attacks.

If anyone saw her now, they would undoubtedly call her a “monster” and fear her.

The faces of the various humans she had met floated in her mind.

But she felt that even the worst of them was probably better than her.

Amidst the pile of corpses she had created, Luna wept bitterly.
