Revenge of the Soul Eater Volume 2 Extra 2

Extra 2: A Little Magic

Ragged breaths, painful moans, lips pressed together to endure the pain.

Looking at Sora’s face lying on the bed, Claudia Dragnote, the duke’s daughter, placed her hand on her chest and clutched the fabric of her clothes.

She didn’t know when she herself had been cursed. Was it really so difficult to witness someone’s suffering up close?

Meanwhile, large beads of sweat formed on Sora’s forehead. Claudia quickly released her grip on her clothes, picked up a cloth, and gently wiped the sweat from Sora’s brow. She did it with caution and slowness, so as not to wake him.

Afterward, she wrung out the damp cloth into a water basin.

How many times had she repeated this process? It had been a whole day since Sora defeated the sorcerer Jijinbo who had attacked the duke’s mansion, yet Sora continued to suffer in his unconscious state.

During this time, Claudia had taken the lead in taking care of Sora. While taking turns with Suzume, Seal, and Luna María, Sora’s companions, she had explained the situation to her father, Duke Dragnote, but in reality, Claudia had spent almost all of her time at Sora’s bedside.

It felt like dedicated treatment for a single person, despite the sleepless nights, yet it had not yielded any results. Sora continued to sleep, and Claudia gazed at him with sorrow in her eyes.

Then, Sora’s lips moved slightly, as if licking them.

Claudia immediately grabbed a cloth, dipped it into a different water basin, and gently pressed it against Sora’s lips. Giving water directly to an unconscious person could cause choking, so she provided hydration in this manner.

“…It’s frustrating,” Sora’s words before losing consciousness, expressing that neither magic nor potions would work, had already been proven. The priest and pharmacist arranged by the duke couldn’t improve Sora’s condition.

There was no choice but to endure. It was painful. Claudia knew perfectly well that it was even more painful for Sora.

Returning the cloth to its original position, Claudia sighed unintentionally. How she wished she could bear Sora’s suffering. Claudia knew that Sora, who had helped her, didn’t want her to carry that burden alone, but she couldn’t help but think about it.

“…Ah.”

At that moment, Sora on the bed shifted slightly, and his right hand emerged from the bedsheet. Claudia gently grasped Sora’s hand and attempted to return it to the bedsheet—suddenly, she remembered the past.

The memory of her deceased mother.

Her mother had once said, “Even if you’re not a priest or a magician, you can use magic.”

Young Claudia had asked what kind of magic it was.

Her mother had lovingly stroked her head. In front of Claudia, who enjoyed her dear mother’s caress, her mother spoke.

“You can bring joy to others simply by touching them. If that’s not magic, then I don’t know what is.”

But that wasn’t all. When someone’s body was in pain, they could relieve it by touching the affected area. When someone was sad and crying, a hug could chase away the sorrow.

It was a small magic that required no magical power or incantation. An original miracle that only activated when someone cared for another person.

Her mother had instructed her to pass on the same wisdom to her own children someday, smiling.

Recalling her mother’s face, Claudia gently entwined her fingers with Sora’s hand, which was returning to the bedsheet, and pressed it against her cheek. She didn’t know if the magic she had learned from her mother would reach Sora, who lay unconscious, but she wanted to do whatever she could, no matter how small.

After a while,

Regardless of whether Claudia’s feelings were conveyed or not, Sora’s breathing in the bed became noticeably calmer.

Relieved by that, Claudia gently rubbed Sora’s hand against her cheek.

She felt the touch of thick, sturdy fingers. Claudia found it both strange and comforting, a sensation that couldn’t come from a woman.

It was the first time she held Sora’s hand—the hand of a boy. The bones were thick, the skin tough, and the fingers slim and long. Claudia naturally found it charming, but she withdrew Sora’s hand from her cheek and, this time, held it to her chest, embracing him tightly.

She hoped that her wishes and feelings, at the very least, would alleviate some of Sora’s suffering.
