Monster Meat Led Me To The Throne Volume 2 Chapter 5 part 1

V ◆ The Queen’s Battle

Marry? Me? With Dorsen’s liability?

Carmilla and I exchanged glances, both with uneasy expressions. We probably looked quite similar in that moment.

“But, I’m already married.”

“As the king, you can have as many wives as you want.”

I figured that’s what they would say.

“However, Frau is a vassal’s daughter, while Carmilla is a royal princess. It wouldn’t be fitting to keep Frau as the queen. But I have no intention of demoting Frau to the second wife.”

Frau has contributed greatly before and after I ascended to the throne. I cannot disregard her. Although she has her issues, personally, I cannot accept removing her from the queen’s position.

Many people misunderstand me, but Frau is the only one who truly understands me and stays by my side.

…Well, she is constantly monitoring me with magic, so she can’t help but understand me.

“That will be fine.”

Gamaras declared confidently.

“Dorsen has had trouble dealing with Lady Carmilla, and since we won the last battle, they should be willing to make some concessions. In fact, they should be grateful we’re taking their ‘liability.'”

Carmilla’s eyes literally changed color as she glared at Gamaras.

Noticing her gaze, Gamaras fell forward, writhing on the ground in pain.

What? Was her gaze that intense?

“Oh, I forgot about her Mystic Eyes.”

Yamato pulled out a long piece of cloth and wrapped it around Carmilla’s head, covering her eyes.

With that, Gamaras slowly got back up, panting heavily.

“What was that?”

“Lady Carmilla has Mystic Eyes that can put anyone who looks at them into a ‘Gravity’ state.”

What? I have to marry such a dangerous woman?

“Isn’t it risky to take a woman with Mystic Eyes who barges into the castle as a wife?”

“It’ll be fine.”

Yamato assured.

“After all, the current queen is Lady Frau, who disregards humanity for the sake of magic. Compared to her, this is nothing.”

…Yes, I suppose so.

“My earlier comment was a mistake. Lady Carmilla, I deeply apologize for my rudeness.”

Gamaras, dusting off his clothes, apologized to Carmilla, who was still lying on the floor.

Um, could you also apologize to Frau? She’s still the queen of this country, you know?

Ignoring my protesting gaze, Gamaras continued.

“There are other benefits. Currently, Dorsen and we are adversaries, but this situation is undesirable for both sides. After losing their forces in the recent battle, Dorsen lacks the resources to redirect troops southward, and for us, it’s unwise to escalate things while Kadonia is stabilizing.

According to my information, the King of Dorsen is inclined towards reconciliation with us. However, paying reparations would damage their pride as a great nation, making domestic adjustments difficult. If Your Majesty marries Lady Carmilla, the dowry could be considered a form of compensation, making it easier for them to pay. Additionally, as your brother-in-law, the Dorsen King would have a reason to ease tensions between our nations.”

“I see.”

That certainly sounds beneficial. I don’t desire war, and since Dorsen is our only neighboring country, a friendly relationship would ensure peace.

“Furthermore, if Your Majesty and Lady Carmilla were to have a child, that child could inherit Dorsen’s throne. This would be a significant advantage for our future.”

Carmilla reacted to these words, possibly intrigued by the idea of her child becoming Dorsen’s ruler. Personally, it didn’t matter much to me.

However, it’s clear that this marriage would greatly benefit Faloon. Now, it’s a matter of whether Dorsen will agree, but first, I need to address something.

“I want to discuss this marriage with Frau first.”

While it might not be strictly necessary, I feel uncomfortable adding another wife without her knowing.

Suddenly, the space in front of me glowed, and Frau appeared. Carmilla, still on the floor, looked shocked. People who can teleport so easily with magic are rare.

“I heard everything.”

As usual, Frau remained calm.

Using our contract mark, she must have been eavesdropping. In hindsight, there was no need to consider the privacy of someone who invades mine so blatantly.

“I have no objections.”

Frau readily agreed to my marriage with Carmilla. Somehow, that felt a bit disappointing. I wished she showed a bit more jealousy.

Now, it’s up to Carmilla.

“I need to confirm Carmilla’s own intentions. Release her restraints.”

Political marriages are common for royals, but I dislike the idea of forcing someone into one.

I wanted to know how she felt about it.

“Understood.”

Yamato drew his sheathed sword and in an instant, cut the ropes and gag restraining Carmilla, as well as the blindfold, and then sheathed his sword with a snap.

…Impressive, but isn’t that dangerous? Couldn’t you have untied her by hand?

Freed from her restraints, Carmilla rubbed the rope marks on her wrists before turning to face me.

Seeing her up close again, her long, wavy purple hair, pale skin, and slightly drooping eyes revealed her beauty. She had a great figure, too.

“You heard the conversation, right? What do you think?”

“If the King of Dorsen permits, as a vassal, I shall comply.”

She answered humbly, which was unexpected.

“But I have one condition.”

“What is it?”

“I cannot serve under someone weaker than myself.”

“Interesting.”

Does she want to challenge me?

“Therefore, I wish to compete with Lady Frau for the position of the main queen.”

Carmilla glared at Frau.

“What?”

Why does a fight for the position of the main queen have to happen? What does she think of Faloon? Our nation is a peaceful, lawful country!

We don’t determine positions through combat.

“Wait, Carmilla. Do you understand what you’re saying? In our country, such things are…”

“Everything is determined by strength, isn’t it?”

Excuse me?

“I’ve heard that Faloon values strength above all.”

That’s not true! Is she mocking us because we’re from the countryside?

I looked at Gamaras. He devoted his life to legal reforms, making Faloon a leading nation in the central region’s law enforcement.

He would surely correct Carmilla’s misunderstanding.

“Gamaras, do you have anything to say?”

“Indeed, Lady Carmilla is correct.”

“What?”

Gamaras easily accepted Carmilla’s statement.

“Faloon was founded on Your Majesty’s valor. While I strive for governance through law, it is backed by Your Majesty’s strength. Without power, no one would obey the law. Moreover, Your Majesty is not immortal. One day, you will pass away. Therefore, the next ruler must also possess strength. Naturally, it’s desirable for the queen to be strong as well.”

“But you just said Frau is fine as the queen…”

“Yes. I apologize for misunderstanding Your Majesty’s true intentions earlier. You meant that you wouldn’t demote Frau because of her status, but rather, positions should be determined by strength.”

How did he come to that conclusion? Don’t twist my words!

Desperately, I looked to Yamato and Brett for help.

They’re the more sensible ones among the muscleheads in the Hundred. They’ll say something reasonable.

“Yamato, Brett, what do you think?”

“With all due respect, Your Majesty.”

Yamato spoke respectfully.

“While Lady Frau is indeed a powerful mage, she is not a warrior. On the other hand, Lady Carmilla appears to possess great strength both as a warrior and a mage. It’s possible that a child born from Lady Carmilla might be a superior warrior. Perhaps, we should consider giving her a chance.”

…Does he think of children as horse breeds or something? And why is he looking so serious about it?

“Your Majesty,”

Brett kneeled.

“Strength is everything. That is the core belief of the Hundred, and I understand it well. I won’t argue against it now. We all know that whatever you decide is right. Please, do as you see fit.”

Ah, this is bad. He’s so earnest that he’s accepted the Hundred’s twisted ideology without question. Can’t anyone here speak some common sense?

Finally, I looked at Frau.

“I’ll do my best.”

…Yeah, I figured you’d say that.

Even though her expression was as blank as always, I could tell she was happy.

She’s more of a Hundred than the Hundred themselves in some ways.

And so, everyone but me agreed, and somehow, it was decided that the queen would be chosen through combat. Completely against my wishes as the king.

However, Frau added a condition: if Carmilla lost, she would have to call Frau “big sister” and respect her.

…What? That condition is so strange.

Apparently, Frau, being an only child, had always wanted a sister. She saw this as an opportunity to make Carmilla her little sister.

I guess even Frau has a surprisingly human side.

Although the situation had become quite bizarre, Gamaras quickly summarized everything and then moved on to negotiations with the Kingdom of Dorsen.

He seemed to have contacted Dorsen in advance using magical communication, and as expected, they weren’t entirely opposed to the idea.

“It sounds like they’re almost relieved to have someone take Carmilla off their hands,”

However, explaining that Frau and Carmilla would be fighting for the queen’s position was a bit difficult.

Eventually, they received a polite response along the lines of, “We don’t quite understand, but do as you wish.”

Following that, the marriage, which was essentially a peace treaty, was officially accepted through diplomatic channels.

Gamaras then suggested holding the battle in the arena, branding it as the “Ultimate Battle for the Queen’s Throne: The Thunder Emperor vs. The Mad Princess.”

I wasn’t so sure about that, but Gamaras persuaded me by saying, “It’ll fill the national treasury!” I’m weak when it comes to money.

Carmilla, on her part, contacted her home and brought in various weapons and equipment.

Likely, some of it was specifically designed for fighting mages. Carmilla seemed very confident in her victory.

Now, she’s occupying a large room in the castle with her maids, rearranging it to her liking and making herself comfortable. She’s quite bold.

Personally, I prefer more gentle women…
