1-2 What I Want
I turned ten years old. A grand birthday party was held, but as usual, Mother remained indifferent. No matter how well-behaved I was, how good my grades were, or how much I improved in magic, that never changed. It was just like in my previous life. Mother was only interested in tea, spending her days savoring various kinds.
I no longer expected anything from Mother. My target was Father.
“Father, there’s something I want for my birthday.”
With an adorable smile, I hugged Father. I had practiced this coy smile intensively in front of the mirror for this day. This was the crucial moment.
“Oh, Selina. You’re as cute as an angel. I’ll give you anything you wish for.”
Father’s face lit up as he embraced me.
He wasn’t exactly handsome, but he had a kind face with a constant smile and a slightly plump figure.
In my previous life too, Father doted on me and granted my every wish. He was one of only two visitors when I was confined in the prison tower. He apologized tearfully for not being able to save me.
Father’s smile made me waver for a moment, but I collected myself and stated my wish.
“I want my own servant. One who’s about the same age as me.”
“A servant your own age?”
Father looked perplexed. Understandably so. While it wasn’t uncommon to assign young caretakers to infants, having a child servant for a child was unheard of. However, they had to be young.
“Yes, Father. There’s no one my age in this mansion. The servants treat me well, but I want people my own age by my side.”
“Hmm…”
Father pondered for a while.

“Then, we should choose someone suitable from among children of good families…”
This was a typical, safe choice from Father. However, it wasn’t what I wanted.
I didn’t need such proper people.
“No, Father. I want to choose from among the less fortunate. For example, children from orphanages who are struggling to survive.”
What I needed were people like hungry wolves. Those who resent the world, envy others, and crawl at the bottom of society. Preferably with steel minds that wouldn’t break even under torture.
I would educate and train such people from now on, turning them into my excellent subordinates.
It would be ideal if they could unhesitatingly kill even royalty on my orders and then take their own lives without hesitation.
“Children from orphanages… How could we bring such dirty, lowly beings into our mansion?”
Even the usually gentle Father seemed to resist this idea. Of course he would. Why on earth should we bring filthy children into a duke’s mansion?
However, I had to prepare for the future conflict with the Saint. They were, so to speak, disposable pawns for that purpose. The lower their status, the better. In that sense, orphans without parents were perfect, as there would be no loose ends.
“Father, even if they’re of humble birth, they’re still human. I believe that with proper education, they can grow up to be fine individuals.”
Yes, children are full of potential. For instance, if we start teaching them assassination techniques now, they could grow up to be excellent assassins in the future.
“Hmm…”
Father seemed troubled. The servants around us were murmuring. About half of them seemed to dislike the idea of orphans coming to the mansion, while the other half seemed interested. How carefree they are. If only they were more capable of conspiracy and assassination, I wouldn’t have to go through this trouble.
Mother looked a bit displeased but said nothing as usual.
“Father, please give me this opportunity to grow as a person. I may make mistakes, but I believe there’s much to gain by walking through life with them.”
I must grow. To defeat that detestable Saint this time. I must never become a miserable loser like in my previous life. If possible, I’d like to end Eleanor’s life right now, but her father’s territory is in such a remote place that I can’t reach her at the moment.
There might be failures where orphans accidentally die during training, but we can always procure more. A life walking alongside those who have grown into fine assassins or spies would yield great rewards. For example, the position of queen, or this country itself.
“She wants to give orphans a chance at education!” “What a noble aspiration!” “How merciful. Just like the Saint!”
The servants were moved by my words. Yes, I am merciful. I’m trying to give abandoned children a grand purpose.
“Selina, I didn’t realize you had thought this through so carefully. Alright. I’ll make the arrangements. We’ll take you to an orphanage, and you can choose as many children as you like.”
“Thank you, Father!”
I hugged Father. I was truly happy. Finally, I could obtain my future forces.
