Unwanted Galactic Uprising Volume 1 Chapter 37

The Contract

Traveling from the capital would be the opposite route from when I first entered the officer academy. But just like back then, it would only take twelve hours on the fastest ship.

It’s still before noon, so I should get the results before leaving Bismuth tonight.

Mark was listening with complete exasperation at my dealings.

“Isn’t that a bit too harsh, even though you’re not in the military?”

“Ah, you mean about Maria and the others? I think so too.”

“Couldn’t you do something about it then? You are the…”

“Like I said earlier, I’m just a figurehead. The real boss around here is Sis Meyrica. I’m leaving it to her.”

“But surely discipline can’t be maintained like this.”

“Well, you see, this is just where the Coast Guard’s unwanted kids end up gathering.”

“Huh?? What do you mean unwanted kids?”

“Meaning this is the Coast Guard’s exile division.”

“Eh?”

“So in this case too, they were just sacrificed because they’re the unwanted kids. It just so happened that the girls were exceptional, otherwise we’d have likely been ordered to go die. An inspection squad of only thirty was made to deal with two armed ships using practically unarmed boats. The girls are amazing. Even under such harsh treatment, they maintained their morale, motivation and discipline. If I had to give up one of those three, I wouldn’t hesitate to ditch discipline. Especially after the terrible treatment from those who ditched their morale and motivation.”

“I can see your point, but do you intend to return to the military? If you keep living like this, you won’t be able to go back.”

“Could be. Well, I only became a soldier on a whim in the first place, so I’ll live wherever I can. That’s how I am.”

Not like I intended to live that long anyway.

“You were always like that, huh. I get it. Keep at it then. Who knows what lies ahead for you on this completely different path from us, but I’ll cooperate however I can.”

“Thanks. Not that there’s anything I can do, but let me know if you need my help for anything. I can ask Sis Meyrica and the others for cooperation too.”

“Listening to you is just pitiful, you know. Well, I suppose it’s just like you. I’ll ask for help without hesitation then when the time comes.”

“Yeah, I’ll definitely beg Sis Meyrica, even on my hands and knees if I have to, so don’t worry.”

“Where in those words was I supposed to find reassurance? Can’t you try a little harder? Honestly…”

“But like I’ve been saying, I’m just a figurehead. This case too, you must have overheard earlier. It was because of my subordinate Kate that I was demoted to this point. Otherwise, I’d probably have been promoted to lieutenant commander by now. Though I might not have been around in this world anymore, but still.”

“I suppose that’s a fair point. Well, I think my role here is done. I’ll be heading back now. For some reason, I’m unusually tired today.”

“I see, what will you do? I can have you sent directly to the ship.”

“Nah, it’s been a while since I had a break. I’ll go have some fun at the colony. In any case, I want to get away from the military for a bit right now.”

“Got it. I suppose this is goodbye then. The next time we meet will probably be if I come to Nihonium.”

“Let’s definitely go out for drinks next time. You should be able to drink by then too, Nao.”

“Probably. Actually, I haven’t had a drink yet. Ah no, wait, I was made to drink at that welcome party, wasn’t I? Yeah, as long as I watch the amount, I’ll be fine.”

“Then I’ll take you to a good place. Nihonium is like my own backyard. Looking forward to seeing you again.”

Just then, Ryoko entered the room with tea.

“Were you leaving, sir? My apologies, I was delayed in preparing, so I couldn’t properly attend to you.”

“No, it was just my fatigue. There was no fault on your part. It would be rude of me to let the tea you prepared go to waste.”

“Mark, you can at least have some tea, can’t you?”

“Ah, since it’s prepared, let’s have some tea before saying goodbye.”

In the end, the two had tea before Mark returned to the colony.

As for us, with the maintenance work nearing completion, we set off for Nihonium.

It would normally only take a few hours for a regular warship, but due to the poor condition requiring minimum speed, it ended up taking two days to reach Nihonium’s orbital zone.

Following the Nihonium control room’s instructions, we stopped here to await the tug spacecraft.

A military tug spacecraft arrived, and we received a radio call.

Like before, a guide boarded, and with the assistance of several tug spacecraft this time, we entered the dock.

This really is a tiny company, essentially only having one functional dock.

Since we were using that dock, the ship currently being dismantled was being moved to the square next to the dock.

Seeing that scene really made me feel apologetic.

Even though it was a request from the parent company relayed through Mark, it seemed we had imposed quite a burden on them.

As soon as the ship had fully entered the dock, I was about to head to the office when someone seemed to board our ship from their end.

A rather small person, but with a sturdy build.

Apparently, they were a rare Dornf in this kingdom.

The Dornf are descendants of a rather dexterous crafting-focused ethnic group that inhabited the remote Dornf planet during the era when this space was once ruled by a single great empire.

When the upheaval occurred and there were no longer any peaceful lands anywhere, even that remote region – nay, precisely because it was so remote – their homeland was considerably ravaged, scattering them across the cosmos, or so I’ve heard.

Nowadays, major powers like the Zirconia Empire and the Graphite Empire had declared protection for them early on and actively accepted them, owing to which they have become militarily formidable.

They must be an exceptional ethnic group specialized in craftsmanship, thanks to them.

That Dornf person entered the bridge with our Chief Petty Officer Maki, Maria, and Kate who seemed to be acting as Maria’s disciplinary companion.

“Oh, so you’re the one in charge here, little lady?”

“My apologies, Acting Captain. The president insisted on coming here.”

“Yes, I’m sorry for the late introduction…”

“No need for such formalities. So you’re the captain?”

“No, I’m the acting captain. However, you are correct that I am the highest-ranking officer present in the captain’s absence.”

“Then let’s get straight to the contract. Time won’t wait for us.”

“Huh?”

“Acting Captain. It seems the boss has really taken a liking to this job and wants to get started right away.”

“Acting Captain. For some inexplicable reason, the boss seems quite taken with that Maria character and has been filling his head with all sorts of ideas, so he must be raring to go.”

“Eh? Is that so?”

I looked towards Sis Maki,

but she just apologetically hung her head without saying a word.
