In that case, I should devote myself to other areas. If I were to be a commander, then I should be on the battlefield.
Ignoring the annoyed Ray, I went to the next subjugation.
When I returned to the bridgehead after destroying a dragon nest as planned, I saw some carriages that weren’t there when we left.
They were probably supplies delivered by the Serule of Yelmark. Mineral prospectors to survey the mines and harbor builders to construct the harbor had probably come as well.
While I was checking the supplies, I noticed a petite woman in a nun’s habit passing by. Her face looked familiar.
“Lady Romelia, it’s been a long time.”
“You’re Mia from Abbott Norte’s Abbey, right?”
She was the apprentice healer who had taken me in at Carresia Abbey.
“You remember me? Thank you for everything back then.”
Abbot Norte had promised to send a healer. I hadn’t expected Mia. I was a little worried, but since the Abbott had approved her, she must have gotten stronger afterwards.
“I see. Well then, Miss Mia, I’ll leave the treatment of the wounded here to you.”
“Yes, Lady Romelia. I’ve treated the ones left at the bridgehead.”
When I asked for healing, Mia seemed to have already done it. If I remembered correctly, there were three wounded soldiers in the bridgehead waiting for treatment. Of particular concern was Romelia unit member Meech, who was badly wounded and probably not even able to walk.
“I deeply apologize. I should have waited for you to return, but unable to watch everyone suffer, I treated them without permission.”
“No, that’s okay. Have they recovered yet?”
I didn’t blame Mia. When life is at stake, treatment doesn’t have to wait for permission. But it was a bit surprising that she, who had only been an intern, could do so much.
“The wounds are closed, but due to the hasty healing and extensive blood loss, I have ordered bed rest all day today. They should be able to get up tomorrow, but I recommend at least two days of rest.”
Mia answered seriously. I would confirm that later, but the expert had spoken, so that was probably the case.
“Understood. I’ll thank you on behalf of the soldiers. But your abilities have really improved.”
When I first met her, she was still suffering from her stagnation. Now she had grown remarkably.
“Not at all, I still have a long way to go.”
Mia lowered her head shyly. Her coming was great, but it was a dilemma. I hadn’t expected a woman. This was a cave of men. No place for a young woman.
I didn’t want to imagine the soldiers attacking her, but I couldn’t guarantee they wouldn’t act. I had to warn her first.
“I understand. Since no one is seriously wounded now, you will begin formal treatment tomorrow. But I’ll introduce you to the unit leaders. Until then, act as my secretary.”
Keeping Mia close to me was also to protect her. And I was glad to have another woman. That should deter the soldiers a bit.
“Serving as Lady Romelia’s secretary is a great honor.”
Mia followed me like a secretary would. Seeing her, I didn’t feel embarrassed.
“Yes, Lady Romelia. More than just me have come to see you.”
“Well, prospectors and builders?”
Mia communicated matters that needed attention. Our purpose in conquering Kilie Ravine was to mine gold. Serule had invited some prospectors to make a preliminary survey of the mine. A survey of the cove deep within the ravine was also planned.
“They came, too. But two others accompanied them, apparently acquaintances of yours, Lady Romelia.”
“Acquaintances? Who?”
I couldn’t help but wonder. I had almost no acquaintances in Cashew, and no socialites would associate with me.
While I was thinking about who it could be, I heard a nostalgic voice behind me.
“Young miss, I hear you’ve been working hard.”
I turned to see a man and a woman.
This woman was the very model of a perfect, graceful lady, fastidious in every detail. Back straight, not a thread out of place on her sleeves or collar. Even her hair was neatly styled. Though the corners of her eyes were upturned, only the edges of her mouth bore a tender smile.
As for the man, slovenly summed it up. Disheveled hair, unkempt beard. Several shirt buttons undone, face seemingly slack from lack of sleep. No telling when he last bathed, scratching his head incessantly.
Seeing the contrasting pair, I couldn’t help but squeal with joy.
“Teacher Quins! Teacher Welly too?”
“These two are Lady Romelia’s friends?”
I ran to the woman and took her hand to introduce them to Mia.
“Yes, this lady is Teacher Quins, and this gentleman is Teacher Welly. They were both my tutors.”
“We were governesses who taught the young lady.”
Teacher Quins explained our relationship to Mia. Nobles usually hired tutors to educate their children. These two had been hired specifically for me. Though I had several others, these two were my favorites.
“It’s been so long, you two. Why are you here?”
While I was overjoyed to see my teachers, I couldn’t fathom why they were here.
“I heard that you were working hard in Cashew and couldn’t sit still, so I rushed over.”
I imagined Granny Cairo’s face waiting at Karulus Fortress.
Come to think of it, Granny had written a letter before. I was curious to know who it was for. So it was to these two. While I thought Granny was really something, as she said, I should learn to rely on others. If they could help me, I would be very grateful.
“You need people. I used to work as a clerk in government offices. I can help with bookkeeping, clerical work, and so on.”
Teacher Quins asked me to write a letter on her behalf.
“I didn’t really want to come, but this guy insisted.”
Scratching his head, Teacher Welly complained while looking at Teacher Quins. Teacher Quins’s slender hand flashed out like lightning, grabbed Teacher Welly’s right ear, and twisted it.
“Have you forgotten the debt you owe me for taking you in when you were homeless and destitute on the streets? When will you repay that kindness if not now?”
“I understand, I’ll help. I’ll do it, let me go! You’ll tear my ear off.”
With a terrible expression on her face, she pulled his ear. Unable to bear it, Teacher Welly agreed to help.
Apparently the two of them had studied with the same teacher when they were young. Despite their contrasting personalities, they seem to have known each other for a long time, and Teacher Quins has influence over Teacher Welly. He doesn’t seem to be able to resist her.
Teacher Quins let go of Teacher Welly’s ear and turned around. She cleared her throat easily.
“So that’s how it is, my lady. We’ve come to help. Please make good use of us both. Especially this man, he has a tendency to slack off, so please work him as hard as you can.”
“How unfair!”
As Teacher Quins said this, Teacher Welly shouted in protest.
“I understand.”
“Hey, Romelia!”
I agreed as well, and Teacher Welly voiced his objections. Of course, I was joking.
Teacher Quins holds Teacher Welly in high regard and has rarely spoken ill of him. I also have a great respect for Teacher Welly, who may seem listless, but he has a broad knowledge and keen insight.
Truly capable people have arrived.
“Are you Lady Romelia’s teachers?”
Mia looked at them in surprise.
“What was Lady Romelia like as a child? She must have been an excellent student, right?”
When Mia asked about my childhood, they both smiled ironically.
“Ah, the past should be left in the past…”
I tried to stop them, but it was too late.
“Miss Mia, can you recite Lellen’s poems?”
Mia nodded hesitantly in response to Teacher Quins’s question.
“Yes, at this level.”
Lellen is a famous poet, known to everyone with a basic education.
“Moonlight on the green forest, right?”
After Mia recited the opening lines, Teacher Welly looked at me with a half-smile.
“Can you continue reciting, my lady?”
“That’s…easy enough.”
Although I took Teacher Welly’s bait, my mind went blank.
Ah – um. What was it again? That’s right, this:
“My heart is grieving, and I am walking the dark path alone, right?”
Although I was unsure, I recited it anyway. The two teachers smiled ironically, and Mia also looked worried.
“Lady Romelia, that is from a different poem, and the second half is not Lellen’s poem”
After Mia pointed out my double mistake, I looked away. Don’t look at me like that.
“It’s… no big deal, not knowing poetry won’t kill me.”
I tried to make an excuse, but Teacher Welly made a dumbfounded sound.
“No, how could a noble young lady not know Lellen’s poems?”
“She can’t dance either.”
Hearing Teacher Welly’s lament, Teacher Quins also chimed in.
“I…I can waltz!”
“What noble lady only knows the waltz?”
I weakly replied, and Teacher Quins immediately refuted me.
“Lady Romelia isn’t good at poetry or dancing?”
Mia was slightly disappointed. It’s bad enough to be thought of as perfect, but to have that illusion shattered isn’t good either. I have to salvage this somehow.
