Monster Meat Led Me To The Throne Volume 1 Chapter 19

XIX Nicol’s Marriage

My base in Cadonia was the mansion of a Cadonia nobleman who had escaped during the Stampede.

Since that nobleman was attacked by monsters on his escape and died, there was no worry about him coming back saying “Please return it.” It was said to be one of the largest buildings even in Cadonia, and the interior decoration was also magnificent. It was very different from the Faloon royal castle rebuilt from a fortress.

If I had to point out a weak point, it would probably be that artistic chairs get broken when I sit on them because I’m wearing a 5x gravity bracelet.

I cut off thick logs and used them as chairs instead since I had no choice.

Such wonderful interior design was ruined. Am I the leader of bandits?

Nicol, who was summoned from Faloon, arrived at the mansion. However,

“King Mars, thank you for giving Nicol such a good marriage partner!”

Lilia, who had come to Cadonia together with Nicol, knelt down and expressed her gratitude as soon as she met me.

Why did Nicol’s mother Lilia come with him even though I had summoned Nicol?

Come to think of it, what does she mean by good marriage partner?

“Big brother, thank you for giving me this important role.”

Nicol also knelt down beside Lilia. I was glad he had motivation and enthusiasm.

The 14 year old Nicol had a gentle, wise looking face. He looked just like he could get work done.

I wanted to dump the Cadonia stuff onto Nicol too and return to Faloon quickly.

“Umu. I leave the matters of Cadonia to you. Cooperate well with Princess Rubis.”

“Yes! Big brother, I would like to meet this Princess Rubis right away, but where might Her Highness be now?”

Oh, he’s proactive. Come to think of it, Princess Rubis was quite cute, so maybe Nicol had some expectations after hearing rumors about her.

“The princess should be in the castle, but I’ve heard she’s in poor health now so I don’t know if you can meet her.”

I heard she suddenly became ill after having a discussion with me. Maybe she was too nervous when she met with me. Her complexion kept getting worse during our discussion too.

“Please allow me to guide Master Nicol to the castle.”

Chrom, who was standing by, made a proposal.

It might be good for him to see the castle at least. There probably won’t be any troubles if Chrom is with him. I also selected two relatively decent people from the Hundred to be Nicol’s escorts.

“Very well. Chrom, guide Nicol for me.”

“Yes!”

Chrom nodded happily.

“Please wait! No matter how you are King Mars’ subject, such outrage…”

Georg desperately tried to stop Chrom and the others who had forcibly entered all the way to in front of Princess Rubis’ room.

They had forced their way into Princess Rubis’ room.

“Lord Georg. The husband-to-be, Master Nicol, has finally arrived. Please understand his feeling of wanting to see his wife.”

Chrom answered with a smile.

Around them were knights who were Princess’ guards, collapsed on the ground. Of course, Nicol and Chrom’s guards had done it

“I have not heard of such talk! It is something Faloon made up on their own!”

Georg denied it with a red face.

“Lord Georg, we are not making up something on our own.”

Amidst this disturbance, Nicol smiled gently at Georg.

Georg thought again that the guys from Faloon were strange, every single one.

“The talk is already concluded. Between my grandfather Gamaras and her grandfather, Duke Gordon. They were both very happy. Saying they were grateful to my brother, King Mars.”

“That’s absurd! There’s no way Duke Gordon would say such a…”

“Why do you think so? For Duke Gordon, having his granddaughter become the Queen of Cadonia works in his favor, does it not?”

“That’s…”

What Nicol was saying was true. Although Princess Rubis suspected Mars to be behind this incident and was desperately trying to remove Faloon from Cadonia, it was not after consulting with Duke Gordon.

For Duke Gordon, even though Faloon was intervening in Cadonia, the possibility was high that he would become connected to the royal family of the next generation.

“Besides, I have a fairly good idea of what the princess was trying to do to my brother.”

Nicol said that while still smiling.

“What in the world is that …… “

Georg’s face changed from red to blue. If they were questioned about that, neither the princess nor he would keep their lives.

“Every country tries to do the same thing to my brother. It’s truly foolish. A truly great king is not something that can be harmed by the such mundanes.

Nicol’s smile deepened. It was apparent how much he adored Mars.

Chrom was also smiling, but his expression was vicious. It was as if saying there was no life left if they resisted any further.

(Is there really nothing more I can do…?)

Just as Georg was about to give up, the door to the room he had been protecting opened.

The one who appeared was Princess Rubis.

“Georg, it’s alright.”

Rubis’ complexion indicated she was far from her normal self, looking pale.

“Master Nicol, please go inside the room. However, just by yourself please.”

Still, Rubis carried herself with composure.

“Of course.”

Nicol entered Rubis’ room with a smiling face.

“What is it you people demand from us?”

After sending out the ladies-in-waiting who were in the room, Rubis asked Nicol. The two of them sat on chairs facing each other across a table.

“I don’t have any demands. I just want us to work together to make Cadonia a better country.”

Nicol had a composed expression compared to the tense Rubis.

“Make it a better country… Cadonia was a good country before Faloon came.”

Rubis directed a stern gaze at Nicol.

“Is that so?”

Nicol lightly brushed off her gaze.

“If it was really a good country, even if my brother is an amazing king, the citizens would not have been easily swayed. In the first place, a truly good country would not provide a pretext for other countries to intervene. However, that was not the case. Cadonia was already showing cracks even before Faloon came over.”

“That’s…”

In her heart, Rubis also thought her country was in the wrong. However, that didn’t mean she could accept Faloon’s intervention.

“Princess Rubis, who do you think the country exists for?”

Nicol’s expression turned serious.

“Of course, it exists for the citizens.”

That was also Rubis’ creed. She was trying to remove Faloon from Cadonia for that reason as well. There was no way she could hand over the country to Mars, known far and wide as the Mad King.

“If it is for the citizens, you should be together with us even more. There is no king who thinks more about the citizens than my brother.”

“Don’t spout such nonsense! Even the children know the rumors of Faloon’s mad king! That after he passes by rivers of blood and mountains of corpses are formed!”

Mars’ reputation was the worst throughout the Ares continent. He had snatched the country leading groups of outlaws, massacred nobles, eaten monsters’ meat, built arenas and took pleasure in them. Before talking about him being the king, he was recognized by all as just being messed up even as a person.

However, after meeting Mars in person, Rubis also had the impression he was quite ordinary.

“That blood and corpses belong to the nobles. There is absolutely no harm done to the commoners. Was it not the same in Cadonia?”

“That’s…”

While saying that, Rubis thought back and… certainly, there was no harm done to the commoners. The only ones who died were the nobles.

“Even so, that doesn’t mean it’s fine for the nobles to die!”

To Rubis, the nobles were also important subjects. There was no reason their lives could be taken lightly.

“Is that so? What do the nobles do for the country? Will they till the fields for the country? Will they fight for the country? Of course, there are some talented people among them. But isn’t that just a handful and mostly they are unnecessary existences?”

“That’s absurd! The country cannot function without nobles! Who will manage the territories? Who will conduct politics? There are many things that cannot be done without educated people like nobles!”

“What I’m trying to say is, their numbers are too large.”

Nicol stared into Rubis’ eyes.

“The way nobles exist requires a lot of cost. That will only become a burden on the commoners. Do you think it’s fine for commoners to suffer for the nobles? Besides, if education is necessary, excellent people should be selectively educated. There is no need for them to be nobles.”

“That’s…”

She found it hard to admit at once. However, no words to refute came to mind either.

“In Faloon, that’s how the country functions. With the nobles gone, the exploitation from the middlemen has disappeared, the country’s tax revenue has increased, and conversely, the tax burden on the commoners has been reduced. Everyone is happy. No one in my country speaks ill of my brother.”

In reality, Mars was immensely popular in Faloon. Nicol himself thought things wouldn’t go that smoothly if he were king.

“…I can’t believe it.”

That was the best Rubis could say. She couldn’t easily overturn what she had believed until now.

“Please come to Faloon once. You should witness the truth with your own eyes.”

Nicol said gently.

“Besides, I’m happy…”

“Eh?”

“That my marriage partner turned out to be such a wise and lovely person.”

Nicol and Rubis’ wedding ceremony was held grandly.

The southern part of Cadonia welcomed it enthusiastically, as it meant coming under Faloon’s umbrella. The north was also gathered by Duke Gordon and they finally recognized this marriage based on the promise to acknowledge the privileges the nobles had until now.

As a result of this, Nicol became the new King of Cadonia, and Cadonia effectively became a subordinate state of Faloon. The south for the most part became the personal territory of the Cadonia King, and Nicol demonstrated his excellent abilities, promoting reforms.

After visiting Faloon for their honeymoon, Rubis also acknowledged Faloon’s leading qualities upon being exposed to its actual state. From then on, she worked on behalf of Cadonia supporting Nicol, and the two of them became a close couple.

And Mars said…

“Why did those two get married in the first place?”
