Geek Mob Mercenary Chapter 48

Mob No.48: “Well, we can leave the flashy aerial combat to the flashy folks and stick to our modest job of ground forces air support.”

While dreading Ms. Rozweisse’s body being completed, my turn came for landing permission.

My ship [Patchwork] is old-model, with various modifications, but fundamentally multi-purpose able to operate in space and ground, with changeable armaments.

For this job, I requested ground forces air support.

The reason being I heard large quantities of small air-to-ground missile pods [Throwing Nuts] could be supplemented on Count Ikorai’s territory.

The power’s decent, and being small, each pod holds up to 9 missiles.

It’s called that apparently because the missile size is smaller than other air-to-ground missiles.

They can be used in space as missiles, but hitting would be tough I guess.

Of course it’s mass produced, adopted as auxiliary armament for patrol craft and bombers in planetary atmosphere.

In other words, because it’s used by patrol craft guarding tridium ore mines and energy plants, spare ammo is plentiful.

Aside from ground forces air support, there was also the job of eliminating enemy air forces, but no need with Ms. Rozweisse around.

Well, I wouldn’t have taken enemy air forces elimination even without Ms. Rozweisse.

Don’t want to stand out.

[Patchwork begin landing descent. Don’t mistake landing point.]

“Roger.”

It seems entering atmosphere was extremely tough in the distant past, but now all ships, no matter how small, are made of materials that remove worries of aerodynamic heating from the heat barrier, enabling easy planet descent.

Still, can’t be negligent when entering atmosphere.

The heat barrier’s fine but the immobilization isn’t resolved.

If something happened at this time, even I’d be done for.

Passing through the atmosphere safely, a broad expanse of brown, desolate land of sand and rock came into view.

Landing at the point without mistakes, on the ground were a considerable number of tanks and armored vehicles, fighters and multi-role combat craft for atmosphere, crammed together.

Parking my ship in the designated spot, some maintenance soldiers immediately approached.

“Any desired changes to armaments?”

While the leader-like person asked me, his subordinates had already begun refueling and inspections.

“No. Please equip the requested small air-to-ground missile pods [Throwing Nuts] x2.”

“Got it. We’ll hold the proton torpedoes you got hanging there.”

“Thanks.”

Replying so, 2 [Throwing Nuts] pods were immediately carried over and the swap finished in an instant.

The maintenance guys here seem excellent.

Submitting the request form in advance was the right call.

With that finished, I went to the tent area where the mercenaries were lined up and checked in.

Around it, tents for lodging and simple showers were lined up, cooking and things being done, quite a number of street stalls also lined up densely, like some kind of marketplace.

Staring blankly at the sight,

“Yo! You’re here too huh!”

“Oof!”

My back was smacked hard.

Enduring the pain and turning around, the one who smacked me was Morise Lotlua, who I teamed with before as escorts for Neima Trading.

“O-Oh… Been awhile…”

Boisterous and boyish, she has bad habits like skipping work and teasing people, but she’s a beauty with tall stature. Muscular yet with well-balanced proportions, she’s quite popular.

Nothing against her but I’d rather not get too close.

Not that she’d care about that of course,

“I saw Arthur and the guys over there. Combat is better with enemies you can beat down clearly, not like nobles messing with each other where comrades might end up opposing comrades. Right!?”

She cheerfully pounds my shoulder.

“Well… That’s true… Having Arthur and them is reassuring…”

As I endured that pain,

“And there’s [Feathered Helmet] and [Jet Black Devil] and [Crimson Goddess] too. I’m starting to feel bad for the terrorists.”

A person cut into my conversation with Morise.

It was Mr. Bernard Zag, former police officer who also teamed with us as Neima Trading escorts.

And in his hand were skewers, seemingly bought from a food stall, and canned beer.

Operations are scheduled to start tomorrow morning, but is it okay drinking past noon now?

Well, [because it’s past noon] I guess.

“That true? Then our victory is certain!”

Morise reacted cheerfully to the info from Mr. Bernard.

“Even so, better not let our guard down.”

“Obviously!”

Mr. Bernard gives a warning but isn’t convincing with canned beer and skewers in hand.

But if that talk is true, declining the aerial forces elimination job was the right call.

I saw media ships during descent, so their camera crews are undoubtedly lurking nearby.

“Well, we can leave the flashy aerial combat to the flashy folks and stick to our modest job of ground forces air support.”

Saying so, Mr. Bernard bit into his skewer.

Hey. Modest or flashy, all of it’s important work you know.

Well, no issue if it’s lightheartedness with understanding.

After finishing conversing with the two, I bought bread and vegetable-packed soup from the field kitchen, skewers and fruit from the stalls, then headed back to my ship.

On the way, I discovered the silhouette of hero boy, Yuri Prilia.

Luckily he didn’t notice me so I passed by without calling out and succeeded in leaving the area.

Returning to my ship, an outrageous situation awaited.

It wasn’t damaged or anything.

Some mercs giving a lively guy vibe were BBQing next to my ship.

The BBQ itself is fine.

They’re doing similar stuff all over after all.

The issue was their baggage blocking the entrance to my ship.

I have the right to ask them to move their stuff of course, but I doubt they’d obediently comply.

However, I can’t sleep without getting back on my ship.

When it comes to this, only option is killing time until their BBQ wraps up.

So I went near the tent I checked in at and had them show me info and maps of where the battlefield will likely be, asked locals about the locations of buildings and facilities there, the shifting weather, fragmentary intel on the terrorists, and details on the energy plant – our retrieval target, gathering information that may be useful.

After around 5 hours, returning to where I parked my ship, their baggage had collapsed with space to enter.

Plus they were passed out drunk asleep, so now was the time to return to my ship.

Avoiding the baggage, I quietly entered.

I breathed a sigh of relief, firmly locked the door, showered, changed, then collapsed into the makeshift bed.

I truly felt that having a small combat craft with shower, bed, toilet, microwave, fridge space was the right choice, set my alarm, then read light novels in bed until drowsy.

  1. Thanks for the chapters. A minor typo’s spotted:
/When that/ finished, I went to the tent area where the mercenaries were lined up and checked in.
    /With that/ or /When that’s/

Also, in previous chapter, the ancient AI got hooked in raising her own man, huh.
