I’m a D-Rank Adventurer Volume 2 Epilogue 1 part 1

Epilogue: Ancient Relics Exhibition

“…Wow, ancient artifacts are really fascinating! The designs are so cool! I, I want them!”

“Yeah, they’re cool. I want them too.”

–A whole week passed since then.

After that, I went to a certain place to take care of some business and then retired to an inn-no, I mean, secluded myself to recast the “dimensional resurrection” that had worn off. I spent several days in a state of enforced fasting, rearranging the spell and performing it again. It was incredibly hard, and I felt like I was going to die.

After that, I stayed hidden – no, I mean I took it easy – until the day of the “Hero Festival,” which I had been looking forward to for a long time.

And then the day of the Hero Festival came.

Today, the weather was beautiful from the morning, and the atmosphere of the city was bright. It was the perfect day to appreciate magical artifacts.

I arrived at the venue two hours early, trying not to be found – no, I mean because I was so excited that I wanted to make sure I could go unnoticed and hid nearby.

As a result… I entered the venue when the time came, handed in my pair ticket, and took my seat at the prepared seat for the ancient artifacts exhibition. I enjoyed looking at various ancient artifacts.

It was a sight that could be considered priceless for any lover of magical artifacts.

Of course, being a huge fan of magical artifacts myself, I had an incredibly enjoyable time.

Pleasant… or so it should have been.

“Oh, the next one is a demonstration of the ‘Mirror Phantom Beads’!… Man, this is so much fun, all I can think about is magical artifacts!”

“Yes, I love them. I want to be with them forever.”

I shouted without looking to the side, keeping my eyes straight ahead. The answer I received from my immediate right was a non sequitur.

W-Well, this is really fun. The ancient artifacts exhibit itself is amazing…

“Hey, Ray.”

I answered the call, trying to listen.

“It’s nothing. I just wanted to call your name.”

Saying that, the person had a happy smile on her face.

“Um… Eve? Could you please move away a little? And also, could you stop staring at me…?”

I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I spoke in a probing tone to Eve, the person who was sitting almost in my seat, leaning too close to me. It was uncomfortably close.

“Did it bother you?”

“N-No, it’s not that it bothered me… You don’t have to lean so close to me. It’s suffocating…”

“Mm… I understand.”

Eve pouted slightly and reluctantly moved away, returning to her own seat. Then they gently grabbed the hem of my clothes with their left hand. It was as if they were saying they didn’t want to be separated for a moment.

“And please stop staring at me. It makes me uncomfortable.”

But even though she moved away, Eve continued to look at my face with a vacant and absent-minded gaze, never taking her eyes off me. Even during the demonstration of the ancient artifacts earlier, they only looked at my face. Why did Eve come here?

While Eve responded to my words with “I understand,” she still didn’t try to take her eyes off me. Eve just didn’t seem to understand.

Originally… I was supposed to enjoy this exhibition of ancient artifacts alone today. I would casually enter with the pair ticket, luxuriously use both seats, and lie down while appreciating the artifacts.

…And as I swaggered into the venue to my seat, Eve was already there waiting – in the seat I was supposed to take.

I tried to get her to leave. I had a pair ticket, which meant I was entitled to those two seats.

But in the end, I couldn’t get her to leave, and now I’m stuck here, being talked at endlessly.

From our conversation, I learned that Eve is apparently the adopted daughter of the organizer of this ancient artifact exhibit.

Not only that, but she’s adored and cherished.

There’s no way some lowly D-ranked adventurer who just happened to get a ticket could just kick her out…so yeah. I feel like crying.

As I was on the verge of actual tears, Eve called out to me again. I replied with a lifeless “…what?”

“I love you. I love you so much.”

Eve’s passionate love cry, looking at me with moist eyes. Massive damage to my mental state.

…She’s been doing this every chance she gets, cuddling up to me and fawning over me like a baby chick. My head is going crazy from being told “I love you” so many times. In a bad way.

How did Eve, who used to be so cool and soft-spoken, turn into this “I love you” machine? It makes no sense.

Well, I understand the cause. But I just can’t understand it.

“Look…Eve, these feelings are just confusion. I may have been the one back then, but I only did it for myself. I wasn’t trying to save you or anything…”

I start the explanation I’ve given her countless times.

“Still, it’s okay. You saved me – that’s a fact. My love for you won’t change.”

“But…you don’t… And hey, my name isn’t Ray, it’s Jirei…”

“It’s…like a nickname. Makes me feel special. I really like it.”

Eve explains with a smug look. But that’s not what I mean at all! Please stop!

“….Well, let’s put that aside for now. More importantly – I did reject you before, didn’t I…”

A week ago. For some reason, she suddenly confessed that she [wanted us to date], and I was so confused that I bluntly replied, “Huh, no way. I was so confused that I could only flatly refuse.

After that, with Eve leaning close to me and refusing to leave, I finally got an explanation of what was going on and understood the cause. But I still didn’t get it.

In short… the gray-haired girl I had travel and train four years ago turned out to be Eve, and the “Ray” she tried to resurrect with the [World Tree’s Blessing] was apparently me as well. What’s that supposed to mean? I don’t understand it at all.

To be honest, when she first said that Eve and the gray-haired girl were the same person, I was completely lost.

I mean, her hair and eye color are different now than they were back then. And I feel like she used to be a little more expressive? And in the first place, I remembered her as the “gray-haired girl,” so I didn’t make the connection.

No matter how much I asked why her hair and eye color changed, she just said “…it’s a secret” and wouldn’t explain…I have no idea what happened at all.

Also, she says I saved her, but that’s a misunderstanding. I just did what I wanted.

Smashing the slavers and taking care of her was because I didn’t like them and wanted to be a hero. Giving her a name and a goal was because her wishy-washy attitude pissed me off when I saw it. So it was all for me. I didn’t want to save her at all.

That’s why I clearly rejected her after explaining that it was a misunderstanding and a mistake. I politely and persistently told her that I’m a dirty and lousy person, so she should just give up on me. I almost cried when I said that about myself.

“It’s true that you rejected me. But… I don’t want to.”

Eve pouts slightly, making a sulky face like she’s frustrated. Is she a child?

“Even if you say that, I…”

“Ray…four years ago you told me to ‘live free.'”

“Guh…I said that, but…”

“You said, ‘Don’t worry about other people, just do what you want.'”

Eve pursed her lips sulkily. I had no rebuttal, only a grunt, “Urgh…” Why did my past self have to say that?

“And… when I asked before, you said you didn’t have anyone you liked. So… it should be okay if it’s me.”

Eve leans her body forward and says this to me.

“That’s not the point. How many times do I have to tell you? I don’t intend to have this kind of relationship with anyone. So it just bothers me when you say that.”

Yes, last week, after I rejected her confession, she asked dejectedly if I “…have someone else I like now? I honestly replied, “Uh, no, I don’t…” and that was a mistake.

Hearing this, Eve lowered her head as if to hide her face and murmured, “I see…” At first she backed away.

Relieved that she seemed to understand, I went straight to a nearby inn and fell asleep immediately. Without eating anything, I curled up in the futon and felt blissful in its warmth.
