Mob Villain In An Otome Game Volume 1 Chapter 21 part 1

Chapter 21 – Father and Son

On that particular day, Father and Chris returned from the capital. Father appeared as usual, but Chris looked utterly exhausted.

“Reed-sama, I did my best…”

Chris’s first words upon their return were spoken softly, yet her face displayed strength and confidence. However, the tension had taken its toll on her, as she collapsed and fell ill in the mansion. I was a bit panicked, but I swiftly had Chris settled in a guest room bed and called a doctor to examine her. The diagnosis was fatigue, and the doctor assured us that she would recover with some rest. This brought temporary relief.

“You’ve gained favor with the Empress and have been negotiating all this time. It must have been challenging for you to have no respite because of me. Let her sleep in our guest room for a while.”

Upon hearing Chris’s diagnosis, Father instructed the maids to treat her as a guest and informed the Christie Trading Company about the situation through Galun.

“Reed, I have something to discuss with you. Come to my office later.”

“Understood. May I accompany you now?”

“Very well. Let’s go.”

After leaving the guest room where Chris was resting, Mel was waiting outside.

“Father, welcome back!”

Mel greeted Father with a bow, her expression unchanged but her ears turning bright red.

“Is the elf lady well?”

“Yes, she’s just tired. She’s resting comfortably in bed now.”

“I see. I wanted to talk to the elf lady.”

Mel seemed a little lonely when she heard that Chris was asleep.

“Then I’ll introduce you next time.”

“Really? Thank you, Nii-sama!”

“Cough, let’s go soon.”

Father cleared his throat and returned to his usual self, although I felt he was giving me a stern look.

“Yes, Father,” I replied and said goodbye to Mel. Father and I then entered the office together. The office was furnished with a desk for paperwork and a set of sofas and tables for receiving guests.

“Please sit here today,” Father gestured to the sofa. As he sat down, I sat across from him with the table between us.

“I’m a little tired from my visit to the capital.”

“You’ve been working hard on official business.”

“Yes. Did you read the letter I sent?”

“Yes, it mentioned that there was an important matter to discuss.”

Father leaned back on the sofa, his expression blank as he looked at me. Was he trying to find out something? Just as I was about to speak to Father, there was a knock at the office door.

“Come in.” Father’s reply brought Galun, who was holding tea, into the room.

“Sorry, I brought tea.”

Steam rose from the tea Galun had placed in front of us.

While Galun arranged the tea, he watched my behaviour without saying anything. What could it be?

When Galun had finished with the tea, he was about to leave the room when Father called him back.

“Galun, I would like to hear your opinion as well. Please stay and listen to the discussion we’re going to have. Also, instruct the others not to enter the office for a while, except for us.”

“Understood. I will inform everyone immediately. Please wait a moment.”

Galun left the office to give instructions to the other maids. Now it was just the two of us, and a heavy atmosphere filled the room.

“Why have you changed so much?”

“Huh? W-what do you mean?”

“Earlier, I put pressure on you. Even now, I am. But you’re looking at me without flinching. It’s not something a child your age would do. And the matter of the tribute is the same. There are no books in this mansion that contain such knowledge. Can you explain?”

I had never had a conversation like this before. I didn’t expect Father to scrutinize me in this way.

I desperately thought about what to say and how to get through this.

After pondering it, I gave up. If I said something careless to someone as formidable as Father, it might restrict my actions. I decided to speak honestly. Just as I made that decision, there was a knock on the door. Galun had returned.

“Reiner-sama, I have informed the household members.”

“Understood. Now, Reed, let’s continue our conversation.”

Galun stood expressionless in front of the door. I took a deep breath and prepared myself to speak.

Scene transition.

It may seem absurd, but I will tell you everything. However, if it’s alright with you, could you ask Galun to leave the room?

“I will reveal everything to Father, but I would like you to hear my story and decide whether it’s appropriate to tell Galun as well. If that’s not possible, then I will keep my mouth shut.”

The memories of my past life resurfaced, and as a result, the current me was a mix of Reed’s memories and my own. It’s hard to believe that the knowledge I gained from my past life could potentially change the world. Nevertheless, I believe that only Father should be entrusted with this information.

“Understood. Galun, I’m sorry, but could you also leave the room? Once the conversation is over, I will call you back.”

Galun bowed and left the office.

“Well, we’ve come this far. Please tell me your secret.”

Father took a sip of the tea on the desk, his gaze fixed on me, waiting for my words. Carefully, I began to speak. When I collapsed in the garden that day and woke up in bed, memories that seemed to belong to a previous life came flooding back.

The memories of my past life and my own memories intertwined, giving birth to a new me called Reed.

Since the memories from my past life contained more experiences and a more developed personality compared to the Reed who had lived in this world, it’s likely that the memories from my past life formed the foundation of my personality. However, that doesn’t mean that Reed’s memories and emotions are non-existent.

I talked about the guilt I felt as Reed for turning on Meldy, my sister, for what I had done to the mansion’s maids, and most importantly, for being powerless to help Mother, who was nearing death. That’s why I have a strong determination to protect Mother and Meldy. I also mentioned that as Reed, I respected Father. Returning to Reed’s memories, I wanted to become someone like Father, like Reiner. I had a very strong desire to emulate him.

Feeling despair at my own helplessness and with a troubled heart, Reed became self-destructive, I believe. Father listened to my story silently. After a moment of silence, he murmured.

“… I’m sorry.”

Father, who is usually strict, was bowing his head in front of me. I was surprised and flustered by this sight.

“F-Father, please lift your head!”

Reiner continued to speak with his head bowed.

“Even though I saw Nunnaly, my wife, falling ill and Reed gradually becoming more and more troubled, I had labeled it as his own nature. And I didn’t know, or rather, I didn’t want to know, that there was such despair in Reed’s heart. I should have paid more attention… I’m not fit to be a father.”

I don’t know why, but when I heard Father’s words, I felt a sense of relief. It was probably the emotion of Reed, realizing that he had been noticed and loved properly. Tears started flowing down my cheeks without me even realizing it. Startled, I hastily wiped away the tears with the sleeve of my clothes.

“Father, please lift your head. I’m truly grateful for your feelings, Father. Um… I don’t know if this is the right way to put it, but I think I am a fortunate person.”

Father lifted his head in response to my words. The usually expressionless father was looking at me with a solemn expression.

Then, for some reason, it felt like we were playing peek-a-boo, and I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

“What’s wrong?”

Father’s expression grew even more solemn, and the stark contrast to his usual demeanor struck me as amusing.

“N-No, I’m sorry. It’s just… hahaha!”

I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. At first, Father seemed taken aback, but then he started chuckling, either amused by my reaction or imagining his own face. It was a rare moment of shared laughter between us, short-lived but filled with joy.

“Father, I apologize for my rudeness.”

“Don’t worry about it. We’ve come this far, let’s relax a little and have a private conversation.”

After our unexpected laughter, the worries that had weighed on us seemed smaller, and the room’s atmosphere shifted completely. It felt as if we were having a heartfelt conversation.
