Two Childhood Friends Chapter 11

Chapter 11 – Oh No, I’m Going to Die!

“Ahhh, that was scary!”

“Did you guys run into monsters too?”

“Yeah! It was a small monster, but super scary!”

“We’re going to have to fight things like that from now on, huh. We’ve got to work hard!”

The students emerging from the dungeon were talking with their classmates. Though they were still a bit stiff, sharing the same experience brought them together, engaging in lively conversation.

Of course, the Special Talent Development Academy’s purpose was to train future military and government officials. But it also served as a regular school, helping kids grow into adults. Developing communication skills was important too. All would someday shoulder responsibility for the nation, so making connections now wasn’t a bad thing either.

“Looks like a great success so far, Professor Urazumi.”

“Ah, yes it seems that way, hmm.”

“By showing them monsters up close like this, they gain the appropriate tension and fear towards them. It’s very important for them to understand the enemy they’ll have to fight from now on.”

The male teacher beside Urazumi nodded contentedly. This dungeon exploration recreation was designed so every student encountered monsters – weak ones of course. The selection was rigorous, with help from the JSDF. There were some things you just had to see firsthand. The threat of monsters was definitely one.

Most of these kids likely never directly experienced the terror of monsters flooding out of dungeons, destroying many civilizations. It was only because adults fought desperately, barely protecting them. Especially in Japan, one of the few countries that succeeded in containment. But from now on, these students would oppose and battle monsters many times. Freezing up then would be absolutely unacceptable. Not recognizing monsters as fearful beings would be even worse. Hence, these encounters with weak monsters.

“I don’t think it’s a bad thing either. Lots of idiots awaken to special powers and become tengu. Like that guy.”

Urazumi’s tired, baggy eyes turned. There was a boy surrounded by many female students.

“Hmph. I defeated that monster you know.”

“No way!? Amazing, Hakuhou-kun!”

“As expected of a descendent of the [Seven Heroes]!”

“Well, he’ll be corrected over the next three years.”

The male teacher forced a smile. Indeed, this boy was the only one to slay a monster in the dungeon exploration. As a child of the Hakuhou house, one of the seven heroes, he likely had an elite consciousness too. That meant his abilities were high as well but…

“Plus, all the students have returned safely. That’s a success in terms of safety too.”

Though this was a recreation to experience the threat of monsters, any real harm would be a big problem. He was relieved all the students made it back unscathed.

“No… some still haven’t returned, Professor.”

However, Urazumi shook her head sideways. One group still hadn’t come back.

“Those problem eloping kids…”

The famous trio even before enrolling – Yoshihito, Kirako, and the daughter of the Kakushigi house.

I looked up at the massive monster, stunned.

Huh, what is this?

Things like this exist in this world?

“(Kyaaaaa! What’s that!? Kirako’s child?!)”

“(Don’t go pinning everything on me! And I’m still a virgin!)”

Kirako and I whispered fiercely.

Mom! You have to properly take care of your kids!

[Whoa, it’s an oni. Bad luck running into something so strong right off the bat, huh?]

The parasitic voice in my head. Huh? What’s this oni thing – some metaphor?

[It’s a type of monster. They have sturdy bodies, so can easily kill humans with physical strength alone. High endurance too – when monsters flooded out from dungeons, oni destroyed and slaughtered across many nations.]

For some reason, the knowledgeable parasite explained. Oh, I see. Uh huh. So it was the perpetrator who destroyed and ravaged many countries. I see, I see.

…Why is a monster like that in front of me?

[Got it?]

My brain spun rapidly. Freezing up here would definitely lead down a bad path. Move! Struggle to live!

Okay, calm down! I took deep breaths, suppressing my pounding heart.

That’s right. It’s not like I’m empty-handed here. I still have two meat shields. I can somehow escape at least…!

“Hey you two! We better do something quick!”

I heard Kakushigi’s voice then. Alright! Meat shield, time to shine. Go on, fulfill your duty!

…But the girl who should’ve been nearby was gone.

Huh? “Ah! Kakushigi, where are you?”

“Oh, I’m completely hidden with my family’s special ability! Sorry for only me being in the safe zone!”

I was flabbergasted. One meat shield, down.

Nooooooooooooooooo!!

What the hell are you doing, bastard!?

This is where you should sacrifice yourself to let me escape! Oi!?

Are you kidding me… Running off on your own… What kind of asshole.

Thinking we were cooperating makes me want to vomit.

“No, that’s fine. I likely can’t protect both you and Kirako anyway. Just stay hidden.”

But spitting curses won’t raise my score. Gotta highlight my tolerance. Well, deep down I was so pissed I wanted to kill her immediately.

“…..To think I’d get a response like that. Unexpected.”

I heard a deflated, surprised voice. But she didn’t come out.

Aaaaaaaaaa!

Having incompetents as allies is such a pain!

Then I looked at her, and she looked at me. We both smiled wryly. Though cold sweat was pouring out.

“Okay Kirako. You know what you need to do right?”

“Yes! I’ll go get help!”

“Wait a minute-” I immediately grabbed Kirako’s slender shoulders as she tried to dash off. Where are you going? That’s not your role.

“Kirako, I’m faster than you. With your terrible athleticism, just stay hidden here. I’ll take the dangerous role of attracting the oni’s attention.”

“I can’t let you take all the risk alone. You’ve got terrible athleticism too. Please leave it to me!”

We firmly grabbed each other’s arms. Damn…let go…! Can’t you show some self-sacrifice here!?

[Then will you?]

Why do I have to sacrifice myself for others!? I’ll kill you!

[S-Sorry. Please stop the female speech pattern. It’s creeping on my skin.]

You don’t even have skin!

“Goooooooooooooooooooooooooo!”

Just as I thought that, the oni roared and charged at a tremendous speed!

Oh no, I’m going to die!
